Broadway’s Inaugural Group Marquee Dimming To Honor Gene Hackman, Linda Lavin, Helen Gallagher, Others
Image
Broadway’s inaugural group marquee dimming to honor multiple artists and industry members who have passed away will pay tribute to such luminaries as Gene Hackman, Linda Lavin, Helen Gallagher, Quincy Jones, Ken Page and Joan Plowright, among others.

The dimming of all 41 Broadway marquees will occur simultaneously on Tuesday, June 10 at 6:45 p.m. Et, two days after this year’s Tony Awards.

Others being honored by the first group dimming are Marshall Brickman, Richard Chamberlain, William Finn, Athol Fugard, Merle Louise, Tony Roberts, Charles Strouse and Lynne Taylor-Corbett.

The initiation of group dimmings, called Broadway In Memoriam and which will take place four times a year, was announced in March by the newly formed Broadway In Memoriam Committee as a response to criticism over what some in the theater community saw as a process that was both too secretive and too selective.

The practice of dimming theater marquees...

Review: ‘The Three Musketeers’ and ‘The Four Musketeers’ on Criterion 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
By 1973, Richard Lester, Philadelphia-born but as vital a figure in the cutting edge of ’60s British cinema as Tony Richardson and Lindsay Anderson, had run his film career aground with a string of flops. But he never fully gave up on his plans to adapt The Three Musketeers, a project originally intended as a vehicle for the Beatles.

A few years after the Fab Four went their separate ways, Lester finally got the production off the ground, and he approached his adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s classic 1844 novel with the same comic lens that informed his earlier work. Initially planned as a single epic complete with intermission, the final movie would be split in two for greater ease of distribution and profit potential.

The films follow the plot of the novel faithfully: Lowborn but skilled swordsman d’Artagnan (Michael York) travels from the country to the capital to join the elite Musketeers,...

The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers: Two Films by Richard Lester (4K): Criterion Collection Review
Image
The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers: Two Films by Richard Lester, Spine #1263, will be released in the Criterion Collection on May 27th, 2025.

As a child of the 90s, I grew up with Stephen Herek’s version of The Three Musketeers. It’s not particularly well-regarded these days, but with a cast including Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O’Donnell, and Tim Curry, it perfectly encapsulated its era and served as a solidly entertaining swashbuckler, at least through the eyes of a seven-year-old boy.

I was aware of other adaptations, including Richard Lester’s, but for decades, Harek’s film was my sole experience with the characters of Alexandre Dumas’ iconic novel on screen. Now, with a digitally remastered 4K edition coming to the Criterion Collection, I’ve seen what is arguably the superior adaptation.

The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers plot

d’Artagnan (Michael York) dreams of becoming a musketeer. When...

And during a telecast in which the two most nominated shows — Netflix stalker thriller Baby Reindeer and ITV drama Mr Bates Vs The Post Office — took home one award apiece, the likes of Mr Loverman, Shōgun, and Blue Lights all scored big wins in major categories.

On the night, Baby Reindeer's sole win saw Jessica Gunning's turn as Richard Gadd's crazed stalker Martha recognised in the Supporting Actress race, while Mr Bates Vs Post Office, which was elsewhere nominated in both Lead acting categories, took home the coveted accolade for Limited Drama.

Damien Thomas, the British actor perhaps best known for his turn as the vampire Count Karnstein opposite Peter Cushing in the Hammer Films horror classic Twins of Evil, has died. He was 83.

Thomas died April 18 at Salisbury Hospice in Wilshire England, and had been battling progressive supranuclear palsy, daughter Phoebe Court-Thomas told The Hollywood Reporter.

‘Murder By Phone’ – This 1980s Horror Movie Needs to Be Rescued from Obscurity
Image
In the years leading up to 1982’s Murder by Phone, telephones had mostly been used as a portent in horror — that first tangible sign of danger. In many pitches, both old and new, the recipients of creepy calls would have anywhere from moments to days before meeting their grisly fate. The killer could be lurking right around the corner, or a death curse required extra time to ripen. The villain in Michael Anderson’s film, on the other hand, was less patient and more direct. Once a potential target was made, their demise was immediate, not imminent.

Prior to finding its way to the big screen, Murder by Phone started out as a novel, or to be more specific, a novelization. On average, a novelization is released ahead of its film counterpart, yet that gap also tends to be small and somewhat punctual. In the case of Murder by Phone,...

12 Best Steve McQueen Movies, Ranked
Image
When it comes to the biggest big screen stars of the 1960s and 1970s, even a short list would have to include Steve McQueen. He's rarely mentioned in the same acting league as contemporaries like Paul Newman and Robert Redford, but his early death in 1980 at just 50 years old is arguably the biggest reason for that. Still, even without later performances that would have surely continued to flex his acting muscles, his existing filmography shows an immense and interesting talent bristling with both energy and calm.

It's McQueen's control between the relaxed and the electric, along with his genuine and visible appreciation for life, that led to the actor being dubbed "the King of Cool." The persona served him well in roles that saw him playing underdogs and disrupters, men who refuse to abide by the established order and instead forge their own path, and it's part of what...

Who doesn’t love the drama and intrigue of a well-written suspenseful medical drama series? As a kid, I loved Doogie Howser, M.D., and how this socially awkward teenage doctor (Neil Patrick Harris) would solve impossible medical cases despite the misgivings of attending adult doctors and nurses.

Medical drama series have been a fan favorite pastime since the first American medical drama Dr. Kildare (starring Richard Chamberlain) aired in the 1960s. Since then, we have cheered, mourned, and sobbed our way through medical melodrama in series such as ER, Chicago Med, The Good Doctor, Boston Med, House, Private Practice, Nurse Jackie, and arguably the most successful medical drama series with 19+ seasons – Grey’s Anatomy.

These medical series are typically set in either a clinic or hospital of some kind where patients are treated for a variety of ailments and medical conditions. Add in the theatrics of the interactions between the medical staff and their patients,...

Original ‘Shōgun’ Director Jerry London Says FX Remake Only Won Emmys Because It Didn’t Have ‘Much Competition’
Image
Original “Shōgun” director Jerry London just took a samurai sword to FX’s acclaimed remake series.

London, who helmed episodes of “The Brady Bunch,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” before directing the nine-hour “Shōgun” limited series in 1980, told The Hollywood Reporter that the FX/Hulu version was not made for an “American audience.” London was baffled by “Shōgun” making awards history: The series set the record for most Emmys wins in a single season with 18 total, and also became the first Japanese-language series to win for Best Drama Series. Anna Sawai became the first Asian winner of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

London’s “Shōgun,” which aired on NBC in September 1980, earned 14 Emmy nominations including Best Limited Series (or Special). The five-episode miniseries later won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Drama. Both “Shōgun” series are based on James Clavell’s bestselling 1975 novel.

‘Shogun’ 1980 Miniseries Director Calls Out FX Show as “Not Entertaining” for American Audiences
Image
The recent first season of the FX series Shogun has continued its awards success into 2025, with the acclaimed show prevailing at Saturday’s WGA Awards and as one of the big winners at last month’s Golden Globes. But a key figure on a previous adaptation of the book does not quite understand the appeal of the recent version.

Jerry London, who directed the nine-hour Shogun that aired on NBC in September 1980, remembers his project as challenging, and says that producers initially pushed for a director of Japanese descent. “I had to convince them that I knew what I was doing,” London tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So after about a month or so, they accepted me and everything went well. But it was a very difficult show to do, and it turned out great.”

The director emphasizes that the new version felt much different from what he tried to accomplish with his miniseries,...

David Lynch Made a Zombie Film with a Dying Child
Image
With the recent death of David Lynch, many people may be digging through his excellent filmography. While he only directed 10 feature films, he was involved in scores of other projects, one of which might seem familiar if you've browsed the filmographies of many other great actors and filmmakers. Johnny Depp, J.K. Simmons, Laura Dern, Sam Raimi, Peter Farrelly, Penelope Ann Miller, Chad Coleman, Richard Chamberlain, Catherine Hardwicke, Theodore Melfi, Jade Pettyjohn, and others. The title is The Black Ghiandola, and it's a short film written by and starring Anthony Conti, a 16-year-old cancer patient who made the film two months before he passed away.

The production was made possible by the Make A Film Foundation, a nonprofit established in 2007 that helps children enduring serious or life-threatening medical conditions to create short film legacies by teaming them with industry professionals who volunteer their time. Conti was diagnosed with Stage 4 Adrenal Cortical...

Image
Everything you need to know about Shogun (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Shogun premiered on FX and Hulu with its first two episodes on February 2024, with the series releasing new episodes weekly until its conclusion on April 23.

The series is an adaptation of the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell, and it’s not even the first adaptation of the work. The novel had already been adapted into a miniseries in 1980, which aired on NBC and starred Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune.

The 2024 adaptation of Shogun received considerable media attention and critical praise upon its release, with reviewers noting the strong production values, faithfulness to its historical setting, and performance of the actors. In the 2025 Golden Globes, the miniseries won four nominations, including Best Television Series – Drama, and awards for the actors Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Tadanobu Asano.

Shogun is based on a 1975 novel loosely inspired by historical...

‘Shōgun’ sweeps the Golden Globes — and scores the same drama hat trick the original series did
Image
Break out the brooms because Shōgun swept the Golden Globes on Sunday, converting all four of its nominations — Best Drama Series, Best TV Drama Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, Best TV Drama Actress for Anna Sawai, and Best TV Supporting Actor for Tadanobu Asano — into wins. The FX epic’s victories in the drama categories replicated the same haul the original 1980 series nabbed.

At the 38th Golden Globes in 1981, NBC’s adaptation of James Clavell‘s novel also pulled off a clean sweep but in just those three categories: drama series, actor for Richard Chamberlain, and actress for Yoko Shimada. Chamberlain played John Blackthorne, who was portrayed by Cosmo Jarvis in the FX version. Shimada played Sawai’s role, Toda Mariko.

The Og Shōgun was the first show in Golden Globes history to win all three drama categories. Other shows that have since achieved this are The X-Files in 1997, The Sopranos...

‘Shōgun’ Wins Best Drama Series Golden Globe
Image
“Shōgun” proves triumphant, capping off an awards season run that includes wins for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards, Program of the Year from the Television Critics Association, and now the Golden Globe for Best Television Series — Drama.

The FX/Hulu historical series based on the novel by James Clavell seized the top award on Sunday, beating out Netflix’s “The Diplomat” and “Squid Game,” as well as Amazon’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” Peacock’s “The Day of the Jackal,” and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses.”

“Shōgun” wins for its first season, with Seasons 2 and 3 now in early development. It was initially conceived as a miniseries, just as the 1980 adaptation featuring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune had been, but as a result of the show’s strong critical reception and viewership around the globe, FX/Hulu decided to expand the narrative into at least two more seasons.

Deadline’s Top 10 New TV Shows Of 2024
Image
We’ve had elections, high-minded dramas, down-and-dirty comedies and more filling our screens in 2024, but somehow when a Christmas tree-transfixed Otis Heiss (Klaus Tange) uttered “we’re all in the Night Country now” in the fourth episode of the HBO series True Detective, he spoke for almost all of us.

Fans of the fourth installment of HBO’s anthology series will recall the line, the mix of pathos and mystique. The party trick is how applicable it is around the all-encompassing nature of the best new TV shows of this year. Perhaps you could say it was the throughline, on and off screen.

After all, 2024 saw the fabled Doomsday Clock stay at the 90 seconds-to-midnight spot for a second year in a row. That’s the closest it has been to the end of the day and humankind since its inception in 1947.

Closer to home in Hollywood, in this year where...

‘The Towering Inferno’ at 50: The real-world legacy of the ‘Citizen Kane’ of disaster films
Image
Throughout the 1970s, audiences couldn’t get enough of disaster movies. The decade began with the all-star blockbuster bomb-on-a-plane thrill ride Airport, based on Arthur Hailey’s best-seller. Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, Maureen Stapleton, Van Heflin, Jean Seberg, and Jacqueline Bisset headlined Airport, which became the second-biggest box-office hit of the year and earned nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and winning Best Supporting Actress for Hayes. Airport also established the template for subsequent movies: trapping all-star casts on a plane, a ship, or a high-rise.

SEEFred Astaire movies: 20 greatest films ranked worst to best

Producer-director-writer Irwin Allen took disaster movies to the next level — so much so he was dubbed “The Master of Disaster.” Allen, who enjoyed great success on the small screen in the 1960s with the series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Time Tunnel, and Lost in Space, brought his disaster savvy to the...

The Best Movies like Indiana Jones
Image
We have apparently seen the end of the Indiana Jones franchise, as Harrison Ford has stated that The Dial Of Destiny is the last time he’ll don the fedora and whip. Well, it will be the action and adventure franchise’s end unless Disney decides to squeeze every last drop they can out of it, which is never out of the question. Film fans always need something else to fill in their viewing void, so what are the best adventure movies like Indiana Jones for fans of the Indiana Jones series to check out?

Uncharted (2022)

This is oddly a full-circle film when it comes to Indiana Jones. Uncharted is based on the video game of the same name, which was admittedly based on the Indiana Jones films. Nathan Drake (played by Tom Holland) teams up with a seasoned treasure hunter in Sully (Mark Wahlberg) to find a...

New US Trailer for 'The Count of Monte Cristo' Starring Pierre Niney
Image
"Will you sacrifice me for your revenge?" "It isn't revenge. It's justice." Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled a new official US trailer for The Count of Monte-Cristo, which first premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Now set for a US release in December - catch this one in theaters! It's yet another new Alexandre Dumas adaptation, written & directed by the two writers who made The Three Musketeers movies recently, though this time they're also directing. A new take on the famous novel by Dumas, about a man who gets revenge after being unfairly imprisoned. It has been adapted many times before, most notably in 2002 with Jim Caviezel & Guy Pearce; in 1975 with Richard Chamberlain & Trevor Howard; and the Og classic in 1934 with Robert Donat & Elissa Landi. Starring Pierre Niney as Edmond, Anaïs Demoustier as Mercédès, Bastien Bouillon, Anamaria Vartolomei, Laurent Lafitte, & Julien De Saint Jean. After 14 years in...

Why Quentin Tarantino Refuses To Watch Denis Villeneuve's Dune Movies
Image
Quentin Tarantino, best known for his supporting turn in "Destiny Turns on the Radio," has never been shy about his taste in movies. Tarantino has long been drawn to aggressively masculine genre films, Westerns, war pictures, martial arts films, and anything one might have seen at a run-down grindhouse theater in 1977. He also likes very terse, tense movies, and has listed Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver," William Friedkin's "Sorcerer," and Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" as his favorites. He's likewise admitted to having fond feelings for "The Great Escape" (who doesn't?) and thinks very highly of Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk." It's easy to guess that he similarly loves "Rio Bravo" and "Apocalypse Now," and he often recommends the Sonny Chiba vehicle "The Street Fighter" from 1974.

Despite his tastes, however, Tarantino remains cinematically omnivorous, taking in hundreds of movies a year, sussing out the pop...

Shogun Cast & Real-Life Character Inspiration Guide: Who Stars In FX's Hit Drama
Image
Shguns cast brings James Clavells bestselling novel of the same name to life. While Shgun was originally intended to be a 10-part limited series based on the celebrated novel of the same name by James Clavell, the overwhelming success and popularity of the series inspired FX, Hulu, and creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to expand the story in further seasons. Shgun earned a near-perfect 99% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and is poised to have a big night at the Emmys, which will take place on September 15, 2024. Shgun was previously adapted into a limited series back in 1980 and earned 3 Emmys, including Outstanding Limited Series.

Like the 2024 critically acclaimed series, 1980's Shgun received outstanding reviews and was widely considered one of the best series of the year in which it was released. The 1980 Shgun cast saw Richard Chamberlain as Anjin-san and Toshiro Mifune as Toranaga, characters that are now being played...

The Original Shogun Beats FX's 2024 Series In 1 Specific Way
Image
Shgun 1980 remains the only American series entirely filmed in Japan, a groundbreaking feat still unmatched today. Despite critical acclaim, Shgun 2024's authenticity is impacted by shooting in Canada, unlike its predecessor. 1980's Shgun relied on Chamberlain's character as a narrator for Western audiences, while 2024 offers a more universal perspective.

The original 1980 Shgun miniseries is superior to the Emmy-nominated FX/Hulu series in one key way.

Peter Marshall, Host of ‘The Hollywood Squares,’ Dies at 98
Image
Peter Marshall, the velvety-voiced host who presided over NBC’s celebrity-filled game show The Hollywood Squares for 16 years, died Thursday. He was 98.

Marshall, an accomplished singer who also was a leading man on Broadway and one-half of a popular comedy team before embarking on his game-show gig, died of kidney failure at his Encino home, his family announced.

The pride of West Virginia hosted some 6,000 episodes of The Hollywood Squares from 1966 through 1981, winning four Daytime Emmy Awards. Marshall often worked just one day a week, when he taped five shows. “It was the easiest job I ever had, and I never rehearsed,” he said.

Soon after starring in the Tony-nominated Broadway musical comedy Skyscraper opposite Julie Harris, Marshall was offered the job as host of The Hollywood Squares, created by Merrill Heatter and Bob Quigley. An earlier version of the show, hosted by Bert Parks, had been turned down.

Marshall...

‘The Towering Inferno’: THR’s 1974 Review
Image
On Dec. 16, 1974, 20th-Fox and Warner Bros. unveiled in theaters what would become a landmark disaster movie: The 170-minute, John Guillermin-directed Towering Inferno. The movie grossed $116 million domestically at the time. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review of the feature is below:

Movie technology is the star of this awesome Irwin Allen production, a formula disaster picture made into an event by the sheer size of its inflating production values. More ordeal than entertainment, it overwhelms the spectator like a bully playing on the fears of a society trapped in its own burning affluence.

Since the screenplay by Stirling Silliphant has nothing new to say (the “insanity” of building skyscrapers is dealt with in Earthquake), and the general doomsday appeal of the disaster genre has already been established, The Towering Inferno‘s appeal lies entirely in immediate visceral reactions.

So, like Cecil B. DeMille before him, Irwin Allen gives the...
