Only became an actor in his thirties after various jobs including working in the Merchant Navy. He moved with his family to Yorkshire so they could enjoy a more rural lifestyle.

At the time of his death, he was a regular cast-member in ATV's Crossroads (1964), playing Sam Carney, the motel's genial general factotum. The part was ostensibly offered to him in order to attract other respected actors to the soap.
