Frank served 3 terms as a member of the General Synod of the Church of England, between 1985 and 2000.

As at December 2018 he and Ian Lavender are the only surviving regular members of the Dad's Army cast.

He still has the original glasses he wore as the Vicar in Dad's Army (1968).

In 1993, Williams co-founded with Bill Pertwee the Dad's Army Appreciation Society. He was the society's vice president until the death of Bill Pertwee in 2013 when he became the President.

Williams was educated at Ardingly College, West Sussex, and at Hendon School. He began his acting career in repertory theatre, most notably at the Watford Palace Theatre, which was run by Jimmy Perry, the creator of Dad's Army.

Williams was an only child and in 1956 bought a house one and a half miles away from his parents house.

Williams started his acting career in repertory theatre and worked with the Watford Palace Theatre, which was being run by Jimmy Perry, the creator of Dad's Army some years later. Williams also met many of his future co-stars including Michael Knowles, Colin Bean, Donald Hewlett and Mavis Pugh.
