- Dropped out of college where he was a pre-med student and arrived in Hollywood in 1920 with aspirations to become an actor. Although he landed roles in several major silents (notably O Sheik (1921) and O Cavalo de Ferro (1924)), his acting career faded in the mid-'20s and he switched to screenwriting and, briefly, even songwriting before becoming a director.
- Moved into directing in the late 1930s, mostly working in low-budget westerns for Universal.
- In 1934 he was appointed Music Department Head for Monograph Pictures.
- Attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy before serving in World War I.
