Warwick Davis’ Harry Potter Return on HBO: The Flitwick Story Explained
Image
Considering how September 1 marks the event of Back to Hogwarts, HBO chose the magical day to announce the return of the first Og Harry Potter actor to the upcoming TV show. According to an Instagram announcement, HBO has confirmed that Warwick Davis will reprise his role as Professor Filius Flitwick in the new Harry Potter TV series.

He previously brought the kind and clever Charms Master to life in the movies, and so now, his return feels like stepping back into the world we already love, only with a fresh new shine. Plus, HBO also shared the names of other actors joining the magical cast. Sirine Saba will play Professor Sprout,...

Bobby Moynihan on ‘Saturday Night Live’s ‘Guy Fieri's Full Throttle Christmas Special’
Image
After a handful of appearances as Guy Fieri on Weekend Update, Bobby Moynihan took the impression to a whole new level on a December 2013 episode of SNL. The pre-taped fake Food Network promo began with Moynihan’s Fieri cackling like a madman while promoting “Guy Fieri’s Full Throttle Christmas Special,” co-hosted by Kid Rock (Brooks Wheelan), who enters via chimney.

Fieri/Moynihan then goes on to name-drop an insane parade of early 2010s reality TV personalities as the special’s guest stars — Criss Angel, Bret Michaels, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Big Ang from Mob Wives, the casts of Duck Dynasty and Pawn Stars — as well as, for no reason whatsoever, Verne Troyer and Mimi from The Drew Carey Show.

The promo also features the most insane Guy Fieri-like Christmas recipes imaginable, such as a stocking filled with bean dip and “Straight Cake” — as opposed to fruit cake — made from bacon and Matchbox cars.

Carrie Fisher Was ‘So Nervous’ to Star in ‘Austin Powers’: ‘She Didn’t Know If She Could Be Funny,’ Says Director Jay Roach
Image
Carrie Fisher was hesitant to enter Austin Powers’ groovy world. The star had a small role in 1997 film “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” but, according to director Jay Roach, Fisher was “so nervous” about the bit part. Fisher played a family therapist who works with Mike Myers’ Dr. Evil, his clone Mini-Me (Verne Troyer), and son Scott Evil (Seth Green).

“One of my favorite days of shooting ‘Austin’ was when Carrie Fisher played the therapist,” Roach wrote in a piece for Vulture. “She was so nervous about it, and she didn’t know if she could be funny. She had recently become sober after a public struggle with addiction, an experience she mined in her novel and film, ‘Postcards from the Edge.’ The hope was that her being super functional as the therapist would play against what people knew about her at the time.”

Roach continued, “That’s Mike...

After breaking through on Saturday Night Live with his impressions and original characters, Ferrell quickly established himself as one of the funniest leading men in Hollywood, but he has also popped up occasionally in supporting roles.

Harry Potter: Every Character Who Died In Deathly Hallows - Part 2
Image
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 is the darkest film in the series, with numerous casualties and moments of friendship and love that make the violence and loss more impactful. The Battle of Hogwarts sees the deaths of many characters, including Snatchers on the bridge, giants, Death Eaters, and defenders of Hogwarts. Voldemort's top lieutenants, Bellatrix Lestrange and Nagini, are killed by Molly Weasley and Neville Longbottom, respectively, and Voldemort himself is finally defeated by Harry, bringing the series full-circle.

Out of all the Harry Potter movies, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 has proven to be the darkest one as it saw several characters die in the Battle of Hogwarts as they fight to help Harry Potter defeat Voldemort. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 begins with Dobbys burial and the grim opening sets the tone for the rest of the film.

The Director Of Baby's Day Out Says The Lion King Was The Reason Why It Failed
Image
Baby's Day Out, a 1994 family film, failed at the box office due to competition with The Lion King. The Lion King's success overshadowed Baby's Day Out, which struggled to make back its budget. Despite its low review scores, Baby's Day Out had potential with its cast, comedy/jeopardy mix, and groundbreaking special effects.

The director of Baby's Day Out, the 1994 family film with one of the cutest babies in history, has gone on record about the film's failure at the box office. Apparently, it was the fault of another youngster, albeit a furrier one, that proved to be one of the biggest movies of the decade.

The Lion King was released in direct competition with Baby's Day Out, and while the Patrick Read Johnson-directed movie struggled to even make back its budget, Disney's "Hamlet with lions" movie would go on to be considered one of the greatest animated movies of all time.

Who Is ‘MultiVersus’ For, Anyway?
Image
Remember Space Jam: Legacy? You probably don’t. It was an ill-advised sequel to 1996’s commercial trash art classic, Space Jam. In the original film, global icon Michael Jordan is sucked into a cartoon world where he must assemble a team of Looney Tunes to play an intergalactic game of basketball against a squad of goons to save the universe. Legacy saw the same plot revisited, subbing in LeBron James for Mj, except being released in 2021, merely showcasing the Looney Tunes would not suffice.

Instead, the movie functioned as a...

‘At last we will have revenge.’ The Summer of Cinema ’99 – 25 Years On.
Image
‘If you see one movie this summer, see Star Wars. If you see a second, see Austin Powers.’ Thus spake trailer-man, in the teaser for Mike Myers’s upcoming comedy sequel, and to a great extent, that’s exactly what happened in the summer of 1999. Well, almost.

The 20th century was running out of time and that summer was impatiently filled with as many tantalising prospects as any big movie season in recent memory. It appeared to be the summer of comebacks. Following Terrence Malick’s long-awaited return to directing in the recently-released The Thin Red Line, Summer ’99 would see not only George Lucas but Stanley Kubrick making their much-delayed encores – though we knew by then that this was actually Kubrick’s swan song.

An exercise in peak-nostalgia seemed inevitable, but the season proved to be full of surprises. None more so than the success of that second Austin Powers film,...

Austin Powers 4 | New film has been in secret development
Mike Myers at an event for 2008 MTV Movie Awards (2008)
Mike Myers is set to play Austin Powers again, as Austin Powers 4 finally looks set to head towards the screen. More here.

Every since he walked off the screen as Austin Powers for the last time in 2002’s Austin Powers In Goldmember, Mike Myers has been fielding questions about a possible Austin Powers 4. Myers has taken on very, very few big screen roles in the last 20 years, but occasional rumblings have popped up about a new Austin Power adventure. Turns out, it might actually be happening.

Over at World Of Reel, it’s reporting that Austin Powers 4 has been developed in secret for at least the last year. The first three films were released by New Line Cinema, which has been entirely swallowed up by Warner Bros now. Warner Bros will this be backing the new film.

Jay Roach, the director of the original trilogy, is said to be back on board.

“No American actors in the film”: Harry Potter Director’s Strict Rule Stopped Robin Williams From Playing His Dream Role in the Wizarding World
Image
It is absolutely wild to think that Robin Williams got passed over for the part of Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter series because he wasn’t British! Now, while David Thewlis undoubtedly did justice to the character, one can’t help but wonder what kind of magic Williams could have brought to the role. Because one can never accept Williams to be a wrong choice for anything! The Harry Potter crew really missed out on something special with that one silly rule.

Robin Williams in Jumanji (1995) Robin Williams Was Denied the Role of Remus Lupin Because He Wasn’t British

Robin Williams, known for his extensive Hollywood career and a string of iconic roles, is often regarded as one of the few actors universally loved in the industry. Many would assume that Williams could land any role he desires.

However, that wasn’t the case when he wanted to enter the Harry Potter series.

Pinocchio: Unstrung Horror Movie Set To Expand Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood & Honey Universe

Pinocchio: Unstrung is the latest public domain horror movie announced by the team behind Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and Bambi: The Reckoning. The movie will be a horror retelling of Pinocchio that is teased in the end credits of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2. Additional details about the movie will be announced soon, including the cast and crew.

Pinocchio will be the character at the center of the latest public domain horror remake, Pinocchio: Unstrung. The version of Pinocchio that is perhaps the best known is the 1940 animated feature, which is the second movie in the Disney animated canon following their debut feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. However, the Disney movie is itself based on the 1883 Carlo Collodi children's book The Adventures of Pinocchio, which is in the public domain.

Per Bloody Disgusting, the horror movie Pinocchio: Unstrung is the latest project from the team behind Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey,...

Austin Powers 4 Would Have Put Mini-Me In The Spotlight, According To Director
Image
The fourth Austin Powers movie was expected to give Mini-Me, played by Verne Troyer, a more significant role, showcasing a deeper exploration of his character. Director Jay Roach expressed uncertainty about how to continue the franchise without Troyer, emphasizing the integral role he played and the void his absence would leave. Both Mike Myers and Seth Green, who worked closely with Troyer, spoke highly of his professionalism, talent, and the impact he had on the set, highlighting his enduring legacy in the Austin Powers series.

The Austin Powers franchise, a rollicking blend of comedy, espionage, and 60s nostalgia, almost had a fourquel, and the movie would have followed Austin Powers' Mini-Me. Created by Mike Myers, who also stars as the eponymous character, parodies the flamboyance and peculiarities of spy films, particularly the James Bond series. Central to its appeal is the quirky cast of characters, among which Mini-Me, portrayed by the late Verne Troyer,...

The Correct Order To Watch The Austin Powers Movies
Image
After the massive success of the "Wayne's World" movies, studios were eager to capitalize on the popularity of "Saturday Night Live" cast member Mike Myers and his ability to create truly memorable characters. While womanizing James Bond spoof that is Austin Powers wasn't something Myers brought to "SNL" like the "Wayne's World" sketches, the shagadelic spoy blew up in pop culture pretty quickly.

"Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" made him a household name in 1997, complete with a massive marketing campaign and merchandise ranging from Austin Powers Halloween costumes to vintage tin lunchboxes. For a few short years, it seemed like Hollywood got swept up in Powers-mania, as two sequels were released in fairly quick succession. But after "Austin Powers in Goldmember" in 2002, the character pretty much disappeared from the pop culture consciousness. Rumors of a fourth film have circulated for years, with the most recent ones popping up just...

10 Harsh Realities Of Rewatching The Austin Powers Movies
Image
Austin Powers sequels heavily rely on time travel, but the storylines don't make sense. The movie tells the audience not to think about it too much. Scenes involving Mini-Me have aged poorly, as they treat people with dwarfism inappropriately. Dr. Evil treats Mini-Me like an unruly child due to his size. The third Austin Powers movie, Goldmember, heavily relies on recycled gags from previous films. The humor becomes repetitive and lacks originality.

For the most part, the Austin Powers movies are shagadelic, baby, but there are a few things that stand out when rewatching them today. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was a culture-clash comedy about a cryogenically frozen ‘60s secret agent being thawed out in the ‘90s and having to adapt to modern society as he tracks down his arch nemesis, Dr. Evil. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me sent Austin back to the ‘60s in a...

Harry Potter: Why Verne Troyer Was Replaced By Warwick Davies As Griphook
Image
Warwick Davis replaced Verne Troyer as Griphook in the Harry Potter series to ensure the character had a British voice, as per J.K. Rowling's rule of casting only British actors. Troyer's recasting may also have been influenced by negative publicity he faced, including battles with alcoholism and legal issues, which affected his portrayal of Griphook. Warwick Davis, known for his roles in various franchises like Star Wars, brought depth to the character of Griphook and embraced the opportunity to explore a darker, more multi-layered role than his previous character, Professor Flitwick.

When the Verne Troyer Harry Potter role of Griphook was recast, it caused a lot of fans to wonder why. When Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone arrived in 2001, it created a franchise that would dominate the box office over the next decade. Audiences also got to see stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint grow up onscreen as their characters did.

Austin Powers 4: Release Date Updates, Story Details
Image
Austin Powers 4 is still in development, and Mike Myers has expressed interest in making another movie in the franchise. The timing is perfect for Austin Powers 4, as spy movies are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. The storyline for Austin Powers 4 is expected to focus on Dr. Evil and his son, and may include a tribute to the late Verne Troyer who played Mini-Me.

Is there still hope for Austin Powers 4? The spy parody franchise remains a well-loved comedy series starring Mike Myers in at least two iconic roles. Beginning with Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery in 1997, the Austin Powers movie trilogy was a set of spy spoofs that saw star and writer Mike Myers and director Jay Roach at the height of their considerable powers. Throughout the three increasingly surreal installments, the Meet the Parents director and Wayne's World creator took affectionate aim at the...

Wishmaster (1997) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The Wishmaster episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Horror has had many periods and the late 1990s were very much for self-referential films, dark humor, and cameos. Wishmaster, or Wes Craven’s Wishmaster (watch it Here) as it was marketed at the time, is more on the dark humor side of things than self-referential. Still, it does have plenty of cameos and references to other movies to be found by those paying attention.

While the film was marketed as Wes Craven’s Wishmaster, the film was in fact, written by Peter Adkins and directed by Robert Kurtzman, two creators the world of horror already knew. Craven was an executive producer here, but his name put butts in seats back in the day,...

Of Course Uwe Boll Thinks Postal Is A Better Video Game Adaptation Than The Last Of Us
Image
In 1997, Running with Scissors and Ripcord Games released the isometric top-down shooter video game, "Postal." The story of a man known as "The Postal Dude" going, well, postal, was a solid release that spawned multiple sequel games. A few years after the release of "Postal II," director Uwe Boll secured the film rights to the game and released 2007's "Postal" starring Zack Ward ("A Christmas Story"). It is also one of the worst films ever made. Boasting a whopping 9 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, "Postal" borrows most of its plot from the second game, but is infused with offensive, tasteless absurdity that has to be seen to be believed.

Boll unsuccessfully tried to crowdfund a sequel in 2013, raising only 29,977 of his 500,000 goal. "Postal" is a film many point toward when discussing the dreaded video game movie curse, but if you ask the director, he apparently believes that "Postal" is not only...

‘Pinocchio’s Revenge’ – The Definitive Pinocchio Adaptation for Horror Movie Fans
Image
In a year full of Pinocchio adaptations, 1996’s Pinocchio’s Revenge stands the test of time as a dark, disturbing update to the living wooden boy narrative.

“I wish you were a real boy. Then I wouldn’t be all alone.”

Carlo Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio was first published in 1883 and for more than a century it’s proven to be an evergreen text that’s fascinated so many diverse storytellers and filmmakers. Disney’s animated Pinocchio is getting close to celebrating its 100th birthday, but audiences have no lack of options when it comes to Pinocchio adaptations. There’s 1996’s unintentionally-terrifying The Adventures of Pinocchio with Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Roberto Benigni has been responsible for two separate Pinocchio movies, and 2022 alone has marked the release of two new feature-film adaptations: Robert Zemeckis’ live-action Pinocchio and Guillermo del Toro’s somber stop-motion take on the classic tale. Every Character Mike Myers Plays In The Austin Powers Movies
Image
Mike Myers has played several characters in the Austin Powers movie franchise. While Myers is semi-retired from acting these days, he has portrayed multiple characters who have become pop culture icons. Before his Austin Powers characters, Myers first rose to fame during his years on Saturday Night Live, where he played Wayne's World host Wayne Campbell alongside Dana Carvey's Garth Algar. In the animated realm, Myers has voiced the titular ogre in the Shrek franchise. Still, perhaps no Myers franchise is more famous than Austin Powers. Doubling as both a masterful parody of the older James Bond movies and a broadly funny wacky comedy, the three Austin Powers movies have raked in nearly 700 million worldwide. The first film, 1997's Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, was only a mild box office success, earning most of its audience on home video. Over 600 million of the franchise's box earnings came later...

19 Worst Things About Woodstock ’99

With a new HBO documentary revisiting the infamous Woodstock ’99, a new generation is learning about one of the most calamitous festivals of all time.

Woodstock ’99 was supposed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “peace, love and happiness.” Instead, the Rome, New York festival earned the infamous distinction of “the day the Nineties died.” There were tons of contributing factors that made the fest the anti-Woodstock: Organizers trying to wring every last dollar from festivalgoers from exorbitant ticket prices to costly water bottles, a festival site built atop hot tarmac in late-July heat,...

Bruxa de Blair (2016)
Aliens, Clowns & Geeks Review: Sci-Fi Comedy Aims Low And Scores High
Bruxa de Blair (2016)
No one sets out to make a cult movie. Most filmmakers aspire to commercial heights even if they only have the budgets for a B-movie. They see films like Blair Witch realign box office accounting and apply all kinds of quantum physics to mimic the exponential multiplication. Very few achieve it, and the ones which do usually do it by accident, and certainly not with serious intent. Aliens, Clowns & Geeks is not afraid to be ridiculous. It joins the ranks as such brave films as Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, and Frankenhooker.

It is also so much more than these films, dripping with artistry, and yet considerably less, with masturbating aliens, pussy ping pong, and sphincter-pinching obelisks. Richard Elfman’s sci-fi comedy has an abundance of experimental fun and a happily reckless disregard for taste. It owes as much to Frank Zappa as it does to Frank Capra,...

Austin Powers 4 Update Arrives from Director Jay Roach [Exclusive]
Jay Roach
It's been nearly two decades since we last saw the International Man of Mystery grace the big screen, but Austin Powers 4 is still in the cards. While nothing is officially in the works yet, it's something director Jay Roach and Mike Myers discuss frequently, and it's just a matter of hammering the right story down. That would indeed be groovy, baby.

I recently had the chance to speak with Jay Roach in honor of his latest movie Bombshell, which recently arrived on Blu-ray. During the conversation, I asked Roach about Austin Powers 4, given that I personally feel the James Bond spoof would fit in well in today's political climate. Here's what Roach had to say about it.

"We talk about it once a month, but until we know what it specifically wants to be. I don't disagree that there is a classic battle in the Austin films, that...

Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens And Geeks Teaser: Richard Elfman's Brand of Gonzo Cinema on Full Display
We are playing a bit of catch up here. Multi-hyphanite Richard Elfman was kind enough to remind me that the teaser for his new film Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens and Geeks came out last week.    It is every bit as weird, wonderful, crazy, and bonkers as you expect it to be. It is such a wonderful and gonzo reflection of the man himself. On a bit of a sad note Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens and Geeks contains one of the final roles of Verne Troyer, who passed away in 2018.    Out-of-work actor stumbles upon key to the universe, is drawn into intergalactic war between clowns and aliens.   Elfman also revealed this past weekend that Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens and Geeks will have its world premiere...

Aliens, Clowns & Geeks to Premiere at Morbido Film Fest
Tony Sokol Oct 9, 2019

Scifi comedy Aliens, Clowns & Geeks release date set for Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos celebration.

A cult classic in the making will debut at a tribute to a horror classic during a celebration of the dead. The upcoming science fiction comedy Aliens, Clowns & Geeks, which features Verne Troyer in his last role, will premiere at the Morbido Film Fest, Latin America’s premiere genre film festival. The festival takes place in Mexico City from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3 and includes immersive events that intertwine with Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos celebration.

Aliens, Clowns & Geeks is directed by Richard Elfman, who helmed the cult classic Forbidden Zone. Elfman's live theatrical pre-shows for that film are legendary and the tradition will continue. His wife Anastasia Elfman, who plays five roles in Aliens, Clowns & Geeks, will perform horror/burlesque at Morbido’s tribute to the 25th anniversary of Alejandro Jodorowski's horror classic,...

Richard Elfman On His Upcoming Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens & Geeks
Tony Sokol Aug 29, 2019

Forbidden Zone director Richard Elfman pulls a movie with the key to the universe out of his butt in Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens & Geeks.

In the pantheon of cult movies, Forbidden Zone stands at high midnight. Richard Elfman's 1980 Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo vehicle was a one-of-a-kind film careening down on a one-way street to an oddly predestined end. On the clock of Midnight Movies, his upcoming Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens & Geeks runs sometime after 3 a.m., striking after the popcorn has been swept under the seats by the night crew. Independent to its core and featuring Austin Powers' Verne Troyer in his last role, the movie cannot be brushed aside by the barrage of blockbusters. Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens & Geeks is the antidote to mainstream and a breakneck cure for the run-of-the-mill.

Shot in a fast-paced, classic screen-comedy style, the film is intra-dimensional, extraterrestrial and sonically grounded.

Austin Powers 4 Probably Won't Happen Without Verne Troyer as Mini-Me
Austin Powers 4 has been rumored for years now. Mike Myers has teased it numerous times, but it doesn't look like it will happen now unless the actor figures out something to do without having the late Vern Troyer around. Director Jay Roach is unsure how the franchise would even move forward without Troyer, and fans will probably agree. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, which introduced Troyer's Mini-Me to the world.

Verne Troyer's Mini-Me stole all of The Spy Who Shagged Me scenes he was in and according to Jay Roach, his story was going to get a bigger focus if Austin Powers 4 ever got off of the ground. Mike Myers has talked about the idea a lot over the years, but nothing has gotten past the initial writing phase. Roach had this to say when asked about a potential Austin Powers 4.

Austin Powers Director Says New Movie Unlikely Due To Verne Troyer’s Passing
It’s hard to believe, but it’s been over 20 years since Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me released in theaters. The follow up to 1997’s International Man of Mystery proved to be a huge success, grossing over $300 million at the box office, and even snagging an Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup. As many will know, the third film in the series, Goldmember, came out a few years later, but ever since, the franchise has been lying dormant, although Mike Myers occasionally reprises his role as Dr. Evil on late-night TV.

While it’s largely flown under the radar, it turns out a fourth movie has been in the works for well over a decade, though it’s safe to say it’s stuck in development hell. Multiple reports indicate that the sequel could focus on Dr. Evil and his son, though it’s not entirely clear if a finished script even exists.

‘Austin Powers’ Director Says Fourth Movie Would’ve Gone Deep on Verne Troyer’s Mini-Me
Mike Myers and Heather Graham in Austin Powers: O Agente 'Bond' Cama (1999)
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” director Jay Roach sat down with The Independent for an interview reflecting on the unexpected success of the Mike Myers-led spy comedy franchise. Roach has been behind the camera for all three “Austin Powers” films and says he remains open to directing a fourth film. The last “Austin Powers” movie, “Goldmember,” opened in July 2002 and grossed just under $300 million worldwide.

“We’ve been trying to think up an idea that could earn a fourth film for a long time, but it’s always up to Mike,” Roach said. “He and I always thought there was more to do with Dr. Evil.”

The major obstacle facing a potential “Austin Powers 4” is the loss of supporting actor Verne Troyer. The performer became a face of the “Austin Powers” franchise as the character Mini-Me, debuting in “The Spy...

#Tbt: The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus
by new contributor Maggy Torres-Rodriguez

Today’s special #Tbt goes to the magnificently odd Terry Gilliam picture The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 10 years ago this week. Lush with extravagant dreamscape sets, innovations in CGI, and an all-star cast, it still holds its own today.

Minus that one scene with Verne Troyer in blackface that was meant as a joke, but generated more of an uneasy murmuring of “oh no, baby what is u doin?” from the audience. But... problematic decisions in Hollywood are made on the daily, so everyone kind of just ignored that and focused on the fact that it was Heath Ledger’s last film...

Oscars 2019: 11 Best and Worst Moments, From Lady Gaga-Bradley Cooper Duet to ‘Wayne’s World’ Reunion (Photos)
The 91st Academy Awards may not have had a host, but the 3 hour, 17 minute-long show was filled with plenty of heartwarming but also gut-wrenching moments. Here, TheWrap rounds up the 11 best and worst bits of the 2019 Oscars.

Best/Worst: It’s not your fault, Adam Lambert. It’s just that it’s weird to anyone’s voice sing “We Are the Champions” that isn’t Freddie Mercury. Meanwhile, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Maya Rudolph made their best pitch to be next year’s Oscars hosts.

Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali in Green Book: O Guia (2018)
Oscars: ‘Green Book’ Win Gives an Old-Fashioned Ending to a Diverse, Forward-Looking Show
Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali in Green Book: O Guia (2018)
“Green Book” shouldn’t have been able to win. In an era where representation and diversity is of paramount importance, it was another movie about race relations from the perspective of the white man. The reviews were middling, it didn’t have a Best Director nomination, it lost at the Writers Guild Awards and it was up against Netflix’s big-money campaign for the year’s clear critical favorite, “Roma.”

“Green Book” should have been the wrong movie at the wrong time, too divisive to be named Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards. But this was a year when almost everything was divisive — there was no consensus choice to sweep to a win, which opened the door for a film with strong negatives to win the top prize, because it also made a lot of people feel good when they saw it.

And after an awards season that took the conventional wisdom,...

Stanley Donen
“Singin’ in the Rain” director Stanley Donen, Sondra Locke, the Oscar-nominated actress and former partner of Clint Eastwood, Verne Troyer, character actor Dick Miller and Golden Globe nominee R. Lee Ermey were omitted during the Oscars’ In Memoriam tribute on Sunday.

Carol Channing, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1967 film “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and died in January, was also omitted during the tribute to showbiz people who died in the past year.

Gustavo Dudamel conducted the Los Angeles Philarmonic to a track from 1978’s “Superman: The Movie.”

Oscars 2019 In Memoriam: Which people made the cut and who was left out?
Gustavo Dudamel
For Sunday’s Oscars 2019 ceremony, producers had a difficult decision of which film industry people would make the cut and who would be left out of the “In Memoriam.” For the segment, Gustavo Dudamel and the L.A. Philharmonic performed music by Oscar winner John Williams.

Over 100 Academy members or film industry veterans died in the past 12 months. Visit our own Gold Derby memoriam galleries for the year of 2018 and the newly-started gallery for 2019.

Stanley Donen would have certainly been included, but he died on the weekend after the segment had been finalized (look for him on the 2020 show). Here is list of some of the people included in the Memoriam tribute for the ceremony (Academy members are indicated with ** by their names):

Gene Hackman, Terence Stamp, Ned Beatty, Christopher Reeve, Jackie Cooper, Sarah Douglas, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Jack O'Halloran, Valerie Perrine, and Susannah York in Superman: O Filme (1978)
Each year the Academy Awards pays tribute to those actors and industryites who died during the preceding year with a heartfelt montage sequence. This year’s In Memoriam segment unspooled with John Williams’s theme from “Superman” played by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by Gustavo Dudamel, over photos of actors, filmmakers and many others who died between March 2018 and February 2019. Although the montage usually features the most prominent names getting slightly longer clips at the end, this year’s segment didn’t follow that tradition.

Stanley Donen, the co-director of “Singin’ in the Rain” and director of “Two for the Road,” who died Saturday, was not included.

Those who were recognized included “Big” director Penny Marshall, “Deliverance” star Burt Reynolds and major filmmakers including Bernardo Bertolucci, Milos Forman, Nicolas Roeg, Neil Simon, Marvel legend Stan Lee and “Princess Bride” author William Goldman. Other prominent acting talents remembered in the montage were Albert Finney,...

In Memoriam segment for Sunday’s Oscars to feature Penny Marshall, Stan Lee, Burt Reynolds and many others
Gustavo Dudamel
While Academy Awards producers have strived for a much shorter ceremony this year, the annual “In Memoriam” segment will definitely remain. In fact this moment on Sunday’s 2019 event should be extra classy since Gustavo Dudamel and the L.A. Philharmonic will be performing as part of the tribute.

Over 100 Academy members or film industry veterans died in the past 12 months. But which ones will be featured in the short segment? There are generally outcries each year from family members upset about people being left out. Visit our own Gold Derby memoriam galleries for the year of 2018 and the newly-started gallery for 2019.

Virtually certain to be part of the montage are Oscar-winning directors Bernardo Bertolucci and Milos Forman, Oscar-nominated actors Carol Channing, Albert Finney and Burt Reynolds, director and actress Penny Marshall, executive producer and entertainment icon Stan Lee and many more.
