He was responsible for bringing together the team which produced Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969).

One of his first jobs was as a comic in Holmfirth in West Yorkshire. He suggested the town as the setting for Last of the Summer Wine (1973) to the show's first series producer James Gilbert prior to production.

For a few years in the late 1970s, he was the film critic of the humorous magazine "Punch".
