Mário Soares
- Grandchildren (João's children): Maria Inês (b. 1976), Maria Mafalda (b. 1981), Mário Alberto (b. 1987), Jonas (b. 2003) and Lilah (b. 2007).
- Father of João Soares (b.1949), a politician, and Isabel Barroso Soares (b.1951).
- He's the founder of Mário Soares Foundation.
- He graduated in Philosophy (1951) and Law (1957).
- Was the Prime Minister of Portugal (1976-1978 and 1983-1985).
- Son of João Lopes Soares (1878-1970)) and Elisa Nobre Baptista (1887-1955). They got married in 1934 in Lisbon.

- He returned from 12 years of political exile after the Carnation Revolution ended Portugal's four-decade dictatorship in 1974. As a lawyer, he had used peaceful means to fight the regime which eventually banished him. He helped guide Portugal from dictatorship to parliamentary democracy and a place in the European Union. He was instrumental in quickly granting independence to Portugal's five colonies in Africa.
