Founder and CEO of New Line Cinema

Robert Shaye was the only one who believed in the script for A Nightmare on Elm Street. It was turned down by every major studio in Hollywood. Wes Craven didn't want to let him do it initially because New Line was so small at the time. Shaye finally secured the rights to it and then spent another year trying to secure funding for the film. This is all according to the book Never Sleep Again.

He originally wanted Freddy to be driving the car (at the end of Nightmare on Elm Street). He told Wes Craven that they needed something to keep the idea of a sequel alive. Craven hated the idea and refused to have Krueger behind the wheel. Eventually they compromised and what we got was the scene in the final cut. The rag top on the car closes and it has Krueger's red and green colours.

On February 28th, 2008, Shaye resigned from his position as Co-Chairman and CEO of New Line Cinema after the decision was made by its parent company, Time Warner, to merge New Line into Warner Bros. Pictures.

Robert Shaye began his career making homegrown award-winning shorts. At the young age of 15, he shared first prize of $1000.00 with Martin Scorsese in the Society of Cinematologists' prestigious Rosenthal competition for best films made by American directors under the age of 25.

About two weeks before A Nightmare on Elm Street was going to start filming, the funding from Smart Egg Pictures, fell through. They decided to pull their investment and use the money for another project. Shaye had to tell him crew that they temporarily didn't have enough money to start filming the movie. Eventually, he agreed to a deal with Smart Egg that said if the film went over budget that Shaye would forfeit all rights to the movie. He reluctantly agreed to this because there was no other way. Fortunately everything worked out.

Ranked #20 on Premiere's 2006 "Power 50" list along with New Line co-topper Michael Lynne. They had ranked #17 in 2005.

Father of 2 daughters: Katja Shaye and Juno Shaye.

New Line would have successful releases of films like Night of the Dead (1968) and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974).

Ranked #8 in Premiere's 2003 annual Power 100 List with New Line co-topper Michael Lynne. They had ranked #25 in 2002.
