Studiocanal has acquired worldwide rights to Josh Lawson’s romantic comedy Long Story Short, which started shooting in Sydney today, and Australian rights to JJ Winlove’s dramedy June Again.

Rafe Spall plays Teddy, who wakes up the morning after his wedding to discover that every few minutes he’s jumping forward to the next year of his life in writer-director Lawson’s follow-up to The Little Death.

Teddy must use every precious moment wisely to prevent losing the love of his life (Diary of an Uber Driver’s Zahra Newman) and to learn to love the life he’s losing.

The cast includes Ronny Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians), Noni Hazlehurst, Dena Kaplan and Lawson.

See Pictures’ Jamie Hilton is producing alongside Michael Pontin and Isabel Stanfield, with funding from Screen Australia, Create Nsw and Spectrum Films.

Loani Arman and Kelly Hucker’s short film concept Our Greatest Escape won the Aacta Pitch: Forever Unexpected competition in Sydney last night.

Drawing from Arman’s experience in caring for a loved one with dementia, the plot follows a young advertising executive who gets back to her creative roots when she takes her mum on ‘one last ride.’

Their prizes include $5,000 cash; up to $15,000 towards the production of their short film from Mini; post-production support from Spectrum Films worth $2,500; tickets to the 2019 Aacta Awards; and feedback and mentoring opportunities with the judging panel.

The panel included actor Damon Herriman, short film producer Alexandra Blue, writer and producer Victoria Wharfe McIntyre and Oscar nominated director Derin Seale.

Entries are now open for Aacta’s national pitching competition, with the winner to receive a $5,000 cash prize as well as $15,000 towards the production of a short film.

Aacta has aligned itself with Mini, and said is looking to hear from filmmakers with “unique, creative and fun ideas” for shorts that are inspired by the car company’s ‘Forever Unexpected’ manifesto. Mini will be the Presenting Partner for Aacta Shorts Fest this August, as well as Aacta’s national online short film competition, #SocialShorts.

Up to five finalists will be selected to participate in the live Aacta Pitch event held in Sydney June 3.

Monica Lewinsky, actress/producer Amy Adams, producer, director and writer Simon Kinberg and Ausfilm CEO Debra Richards will hand out the prizes at Australians in Film’s 7th annual awards gala in Los Angeles.

Supporting AiF’s mission to help introduce Australian talent into the international market and to provide educational and career development programs, the awards will be doled out at Paramount Pictures Studio at 6 pm on October 24.

The fundraising event will be hosted by actor, producer, director and writer Josh Lawson, who was nominated for an Academy Award this year along with director Derin Seale for their short film The Eleven O’Clock, which he starred in, wrote and produced.

The Australian short film, “The Eleven O’Clock” provides the lone comedic entry among this year’s nominees at the Oscars for Best Live Action Short Film. This marks the first nomination for director Derin Seale and writer Josh Lawson.

The film opens on psychiatrist, Dr. Terry Phillips (Lawson), sitting in his office when a woman enters. She tells him her name is Linda and she is a temp for the normal receptionist who is out for the morning. He tells her that’s fine and asks her who his 11:00 appointment is with. She replies it’s a new patient who suffers from delusions of grandeur and believes himself to be a psychiatrist. Soon after, a man walks into the office saying he is Dr. Nathan Klein (Damon Herriman), apologizing for his lateness and that he is ready for their appointment.

A screening committee drawn from the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members winnowed a record field of 165 entries for Best Live Action Short down to 10 semi-finalists. All members of the branch could attend December screenings in Los Angeles, London, New York and San Francisco and then cast preferential ballots for the five nominees.

The Shape of Water, Get Out, Lady Bird, Dunkirk and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri led the 2018 Oscar nominations, with Guillermo Del Toro's horror/romance The Shape of Water scoring an impressive 13 nods.

All five of the aforementioned films were nominated for Best Picture, a list that also included Phantom Thread, The Post, Call Me By Your Name and Darkest Hour.

Two American university film schools are represented on this year’s Oscar shortlist for Best Live Action Short Film, which have to win film festival awards to qualify. The Academy’s Short Films and Animation branch selected 10 live-action shorts (out of 165 qualified submissions) to contend for Oscar nominations. They will now vote for five nominees from the shortlist after attending January branch screenings in Los Angeles, London, New York and San Francisco.

The shorts are listed below in alphabetical order. No film will be deemed a frontrunner until I have seen it.

Ten live-action short films have been selected to advance in the contest for best live-action short Oscar. The films on the shortlist were chosen by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s short films and feature animation branch, which reviewed all eligible entries.

Members of the branch will now choose five nominees, which will be announced Jan. 23 when the full list of nominees for the 90th Academy Awards is unveiled.

Flickerfest marks the film.s Aussie debut, having already screened at the 2016 La Shorts Fest, where it took out Best Comedy, as well as Valladolid International Film Festival and Toronto Short Film Festival.
