Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson in Invocação do Mal 4: O Último Ritual (2025)
Box Office Predictions: The Conjuring: Last Rites to exorcise the top spot as Weapons continues to run free
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson in Invocação do Mal 4: O Último Ritual (2025)
The spookiest season of the year is fast-approaching, and you know what that means. The box office will get much scarier as studios treat audiences to jump scares, demented family members, and things that go bump in the night. The onset of Autumn also marks the back-to-school rush, with financial priority changes, wardrobe updates, and photos of kids offering up too much personal information on their parents’ social media. Interestingly, the beginning of this season kicks off with an ending, thanks to The Conjuring: Last Rites, which stands to claim the top spot at the box office.

Michael Chaves directs The Conjuring: Last Rites from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg,...

Funny Legacy Featurette for 'Spinal Tap' Looking Back at the Classic
Image
"It's incredibly profound, and it's really stupid." Bleecker Street has unveiled a very funny 5-minute rock doc featurette in promotion of Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, the long-awaited, heavy metal legacy sequel, epic reuniting of unforgettable British rock band Spinal Tap. It's a proper continuation of the 1984 mockumentary classic that is still just as ridiculously funny today – now 41 years later. In this follow-up, the iconic metal band reunite after a 15-year break for one final concert. "The thing that you guys had as kids, is that still there?" The entire cast rock band is back for more mayhem, as they reunite and deal with all their grudges from the past.

The Members of Spinal Tap on Getting the World’s Loudest Band Back Together
Image
As we learned from the original Spinal Tap, all things must pass — or choke on someone else’s vomit, or die in a bizarre gardening accident, or explode onstage. So it’s appropriate that the film’s long-delayed sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (in theaters Sept. 12), functions as a very funny elegy for the entire rock & roll era, with returning original cast members Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer leaning hard into their fictional band’s creakiness as they prepare for the Tap’s final concert.

“The...

It's 2025 And I Just Watched This Is Spinal Tap For The First Time - These Are My Honest Thoughts
Image
After checking off legendary comedy "The Naked Gun," and then finally getting around to watching beloved musical "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," it feels fitting that musical mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap" gets cleared from my watchlist in time for "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" arriving later this year. My encounter with the loudest band in the U.K. goes as far as their guest appearance on "The Simpsons," in which the band does a gig in Springfield, and Otto complains that the audience is too loud and ruining it for everyone. As it turns out, though, Spinal Tap predates even their big-screen outing. The band was a creation of Christopher Guest,...

Cruel ‘SNL’ Summers: Cast Overhauls Are a Time-Honored Ritual
Image
As of the publish time of this story, four members of Saturday Night Live’s season 50 cast aren’t returning for season 51, which is set to begin Oct. 4. The departures of Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Emil Wakim and Devon Walker make for the largest cast turnover since 2022, when eight performers left.

It’s also far from unprecedented in SNL’s history — in fact, the show has rarely gone more than a few years without a significant overhaul of its cast. Over the half-century Saturday Night Live has been airing on NBC, cast shakeups have roiled the show numerous times, with some performers leaving of their own accord and others let go for a myriad of reasons ranging from budget cuts to a desire by SNL mastermind Lorne Michaels for fresh faces and perspectives.

“The cryptic hiring protocols extend to staying hired,” writes Susan Morrison in her biography of Michaels, Lorne:...

Rob Reiner on ‘Spinal Tap II’ and His Real Rock Memories: ‘I Overheard Janis Joplin Making Love!’
Image
Director Rob Reiner has never made a sequel in his long career, and he hadn’t ever contemplated a follow-up to the most beloved rock comedy ever made, 1984’s This Is Spinal Tap. But then Harry Shearer, who plays Tap bassist Derek Smalls, fought a yearlong battle to reclaim ownership of the film — and won. ”We sat and we said, ‘Well, what do we do?'” Reiner says in the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now. “We got the rights back. What do we do with this? And so at first we said,...

Stonehenge Has Been Closing Early Because Spinal Tap Is Secretly Filming Something There
Image
This article contains potential spoilers for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

It’s been more than 40 years since This Is Spinal Tap hit theaters, much to the confusion of the American moviegoing public. And now we’re finally getting a theatrical sequel to the classic mockumentary: Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

While the movie hasn’t been released yet, we do know that it includes a scene in which Sir Elton John joins the band onstage for a performance of their rock ballad “Stonehenge,” along with a prop that’s far larger than they had back in ‘84.

But that may not be the only time that the sequel references the ancient English monument.

Alex Gibney’s Elon Musk Documentary to Be Released Theatrically in the U.S. by Bleecker Street
Image
Alex Gibney’s anticipated Elon Musk documentary will be released theatrically in the U.S. by Bleecker Street.

“Musk” is an incisive look behind the legend of Elon Musk. Gibney has been continuously expanding the film’s scope to unveil a rich portrait, even as history unfolds in real-time. Bleecker Street will roll out “Musk” in theaters before its HBO Max debut. HBO Documentary Films pre-bought North American streaming and TV rights to the project, while Universal Pictures Content Group has acquired international rights.

“No biographical portrait, outside of obvious political figures, has centered on an individual so at the crossroads of our society as Elon Musk,” said Kent Sanderson, Bleecker Street CEO, in a statement: “But there is also no filmmaker that I could possibly imagine bringing that story to audiences with unmatched clarity, audacity, and urgency more than Alex Gibney,” Sanderson continued.

Gibney previously directed “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,...

8 Predictions for the First Host of ‘SNL’ Season 51
Image
Historically, Saturday Night Live aims to kick off each season with a bang, so its season premieres typically feature fan-favorite SNL alumni or white-hot stars coming off a big summer.

The past five seasons have seen Jean Smart (fresh from her comedy Emmy win for Hacks), Pete Davidson (the show’s hottest alum thanks to tabloid romances and scandalous meltdowns), Miles Teller, Owen Wilson (promoting Marvel TV shows and movies) and Chris Rock (trying to make SNL safe from Covid once again).

Who will Lorne Michaels tap to guide the show into its 51st season? Here are eight educated guesses, based on marketing opportunities meeting comedy bona fides...

Spinal Tap Reunites For Band Interview Ahead Of Sequel: ‘There’s No Solution For An Old Friendship’

Turn your amps up to 11, everyone: Spinal Tap are back. After 1984’s classic comedy, the heavy metal masterminds – Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) – have returned in a new doc from returning filmmaker Marty DeBergi for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. The results look to be bigger than Stonehenge – certainly the version Spinal Tap had on stage in the first film.

In support of the sequel, all three members of Spinal Tap – and DeBergi – sat down with Empire for a major new interview, talking their disdain for the original doc, their new material, and – as you can read in the extract below – the secret of the band’s longevity, still rocking all these years later:

Rob Reiner explains how ‘The Simpsons’ saved Spinal Tap after 40 years
Image
That long-dreaded awaited Spinal Tap reunion wouldn’t be happening with the generous funding of C. Montgomery Burns.

As director Rob Reiner tells it, he and his This Is Spinal Tap collaborators Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer had long ago abandoned the idea of making a sequel to their seminal 1984 mockumentary. But thanks to a series of fortunate events — including the deep pockets of one of the stars — the quartet is back with Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

Speaking at Collider’s Directors on Directing panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, Reiner explained why it took four decades for the “Stonehenge” purveyors to dial it back up to 11 one more time.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues | Full trailer emerges, film out in September

Mockumentary sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is out in September, and the full trailer has emerged as a reminder.

Update 25th July 2025: Belated mockumentary sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues now – finally – has a full trailer. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer are back in their wigs (now greyer) as the hapless veteran rock band, now reuniting for one last gig.

Just as importantly, director Rob Reiner is also back in front of the camera as documentarian Marty Dibergi, who catches up with the ageing rockers as they stumble back out of obscurity in an age of social media and branded merchandise.

Few are likely to expect The End Continues to reach the classic heights of the 1984 original, but that’s partly because so few comedies have. Here’s hoping it’s a fitting send-off for the writers of such rock standards as Stone Henge,...

The Band Gets Back Together in ‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’ Trailer
Image
After more than 40 years of clamoring, fans have finally gotten a glimpse at the return of some mock rock legends in the trailer for “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.”

The trailer for the “This Is Spinal Tap” sequel features the reunion of the iconic band from Rob Reiner’s 1984 directorial debut. Reiner returns to direct, write and star in the long-awaited sequel to his original music mockumentary. Joining him as actors and writers are Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer — all of whom starred in and co-wrote the original film.

In the new trailer, Reiner returns as Martin “Marty” Di Bergi, a fictional documentarian who “directed” the original documentary about the band Spinal Tap’s 1982 tour for their album “Smell the Glove.” Since the events of the first movie, the members have all gone their separate ways. Footage shows David St. Hubbins (McKean) playing in a mariachi band,...

‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’ Trailer Sees the Lads Reunite for One Last Gig
Image
They’re back! The first official trailer for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues has dropped, and we see the lads from the legendary British rock band reunite for one last gig.

In the clip, we see filmmaker Marty Dibergi catch people up with what’s happened to Spinal Tap since his first film, This Is Spinal Tap. We then see the central Tap trio of Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) all looking their age and leading rather sedentary lives, in stark comparison to their past lives as stadium rock gods. The trailer then shows us efforts by the band to reunite for one last hurrah, including their efforts to recruit a drummer suicidal enough to play the gig, their merchandising efforts and whether one (or two) of them dying on stage would help boost publicity for the gig and cement their legacy.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues trailer turns the volume to 11

Like a big bottom, Spinal Tap has dropped at the San Diego Comic Con. With that – as promised – comes the first trailer for their much-anticipated return: Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

A lot has happened in the 40+ years since Marty Di Bergi documented the ill-fated heavy metal band: David St. Hubbins has joined a mariachi band, Derek Smalls is selling cryptocurrency and Nigel Tufnel is selling cheese, only picking up his axe for pub gigs. But it’s time for one more show…They just need yet another drummer.

It’s the perfect setup to get the band back together, and the trailer for Spinal Tap II looks to follow through not just on story but also the humor that made the original 1984 mockumentary such a classic. Add to that cameos from the likes of Questlove, Elton John and Paul McCartney – who declares that the band’s 1970 single “Big...

Spinal Tap 2 Trailer Brings The British Rock Band Into 21st Century Without Missing A Beat
Image
All the way back in 1984, the world was introduced to the rock sensation known as Spinal Tap. As fictional documentarian Marty Di Bergi, real-life filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner toured around the country with the fake British rock band comprised of David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls, as well as a revolving door of drummers who kept encountering unfortunate circumstances, forcing them to leave the band. Sure, this is a mockumentary, but as one of the first films of its kind, the comedy managed to trick a lot of people into thinking that Spinal Tap was a real band.

Followed by Marty and his guerrilla film crew, Spinal Tap quickly discovered the challenges of being aging rockers in the modern world, dealt with stuffy record executives, and endured sparsely attended promotional events. They even lost Nigel Tufnel from the band for a short while.

But that's all in the past,...

‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’ Trailer: The Band Rocks Out With Elton John in Comedy Sequel 41 Years in the Making
Image
Bleecker Street has released the first trailer for its music mockumentary sequel, “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.”

Forty-one years in the making, “The End Continues” is the follow-up to the 1984 classic comedy, “This Is Spinal Tap.” In the original film, director Rob Reiner — playing a fictional version of himself — follows the fictional British metal band across its North American tour. Though the film is scripted, it follows the visual language and conventions of the era’s iconic music documentaries like Led Zeppelin’s “The Song Remains the Same” and The Band’s “The Last Waltz,” satirizing the dramatic, eccentric and wild behaviors of rock-and-roll musicians.

Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer reprise their roles as Spinal Tap bandmates Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins and Derek Smalls in “The End Continues.” Reiner also returns, both in front of and behind the camera.

The sequel shows the band recruiting a...

Image
Today, we have our first look at Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, the sequel to the cult, metal hit, This Is Spinal Tap.   We love seeing Elton John on the piano in the background of that first picture and the mini megaliths in the second picture make us laugh. The costume department's work in the third picture though. The Albert Lee tour shirt on McKean, the Shroud of Turin t-shirt on Guest, and Harry Shearer in the middle, looking like a metalhead who has lived and breathed the scene since high school. It is perfect!   Forty-one years after the release of the groundbreaking mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, the now estranged bandmates David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls (Michael McKean,...

Mara Corday, Barton MacLane, and Willard Parker in Naked Gun (1956)
Rob Reiner teases the Paul McCartney cameo in the Spinal Tap sequel
Mara Corday, Barton MacLane, and Willard Parker in Naked Gun (1956)
While special early viewers of the new Naked Gun are raving that it stays true to the originals, it optimistically looks the same for Spinal Tap II. Rob Reiner said that every piece came together with ease once things got moving, “The fun thing about it is we’ve known each other for so many years, and you just fall right back into it. You know, the whole film is improvised. The dialogue is all improvised. And what Chris Guest calls “schnadling” — we schnadle with each other, you know? It’s just fun. Putting together this movie is like putting together a puzzle with no picture on the box. We’ve got the contours of it, because we have a ten-page outline. But we’ll have a scene that lasts 15 or 20 minutes, that winds up being a minute in the movie. You find the best bits of everything, and you cut them together.

Rob Reiner Teases Paul McCartney, Elton John Cameos in ‘Spinal Tap II’
Image
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues writer-director Rob Reiner may be amazed by the love that Paul McCartney and Elton John still have for performing, as both legendary musicians make cameos in the forthcoming sequel movie.

The follow-up to the 1984 cult classic This Is Spinal Tap hits theaters Sept. 12 from Bleecker Street. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Reiner star in the comedy about a heavy metal band reuniting for one last show.

During an interview with AARP Movies for Grownups, Reiner was asked whether Spinal Tap’s final concert featuring appearances from McCartney and John is intended as a statement about reinvention.

“It basically says: ‘No matter how old you are, if you can still do it and still enjoy doing it, then do it,'” Reiner replied. “I asked Paul McCartney about this. I said, ‘There’s you, Mick Jagger, Elton John, and you still like to perform.

"They Were So Dumb": Spinal Tap Director Claps Back At Iconic Heavy Metal Band
Image
This Is Spinal Tap director Rob Reiner has revealed how one iconic heavy metal band was incensed at the classic comedy movie, although Reiner quickly brushed their criticism aside. Speaking to Screen Rant to promote This is Spinal Tap's 41st anniversary re-release, Reiner explained that the movie draws from plenty of real-life stories about famous bands.

"We took from real life. We took actual stories that we knew about. We knew about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers getting lost backstage and Van Halen having these crazy demands for what was backstage." - Rob Reiner

Reiner is credited as a co-writer on This is Spinal Tap with Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest and Michael McKean, the trio who make up the heavy metal band on screen. As well as borrowing stories from the annals of rock-and-roll history, the writers also put in plenty of their own ideas. Surprisingly, it was one...
