Wrote an original screenplay for Michelangelo Antonioni entitled "La fortresse" (The Fortress); the movie was never made.

Refused to allow his novels to be made into films.

He was inducted into France's Legion of Honor, as well as the prestigious French Academy, the official custodian of the French language. However, he refused to purchase the Academy's ceremonial robes for his induction ceremony. He also declined the tradition of giving a eulogy for his predecessor.

In 2003 he, Mikhail Vartanov and Krzysztof Zanussi were guests of the Summer Film School in Czech Republic.

Robbe-Grillet was elected a member of the Académie française on 25 March 2004, succeeding Maurice Rheims at seat No. 32.

Alain Robbe-Grillet was a French writer and filmmaker. He was one of the figures most associated with the Nouveau Roman ('new novel') trend of the 1960s, along with Nathalie Sarraute, Michel Butor and Claude Simon.

He was trained as an agricultural engineer. In 1945, he completed his diploma at the National Institute of Agronomy. Later, his work as an agronomist took him to Martinique, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Morocco.

During the years 1943 and 1944, he participated in compulsory labor in Nuremberg, where he worked as a machinist. The initial few months were seen by Robbe-Grillet as something of a holiday.
