- Rafelson left home at 14 and worked variously as a rodeo rider, a hand on an ocean liner and a jazz musician. He later enrolled at Dartmouth College to study philosophy. He started writing plays in 1953.
- During his service in the United States Army he was based in Japan where he took up disc-jockeying and subsequently working on films produced by the Shochiku company.
- He was the son of Marjorie (Blumenfeld) and Sydney Rafelson, a hat ribbon manufacturer. His family was Jewish (from Russia, Germany, and Austria).
- He has produced three films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: Sem Destino (1969), Cada um Vive como Quer (1970), & A Última Sessão de Cinema (1971). He has also directed one film that is in the registry: Five Easy Pieces (1970).
