Rafelson left home at 14 and worked variously as a rodeo rider, a hand on an ocean liner and a jazz musician. He later enrolled at Dartmouth College to study philosophy. He started writing plays in 1953.

During his service in the United States Army he was based in Japan where he took up disc-jockeying and subsequently working on films produced by the Shochiku company.

He was the son of Marjorie (Blumenfeld) and Sydney Rafelson, a hat ribbon manufacturer. His family was Jewish (from Russia, Germany, and Austria).

He has produced three films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: Sem Destino (1969), Cada um Vive como Quer (1970), & A Última Sessão de Cinema (1971). He has also directed one film that is in the registry: Five Easy Pieces (1970).
