American character actor whose career began in silents but moved ahead in small film roles playing both sides of the moral fence as both no-nonsense inspectors, judges or attorneys and as crime bosses or crooked politicos.

Raised in California and attended various schools there. Later attended University of Southern California and University of Pennsylvania.

Appears in four Oscar Best Picture nominees: O Peso da Lei (1929), Sede de Escândalo (1931), Grande Hotel (1932) and Flores do Pó (1941). Grand Hotel won Best Picture.
