- American character actor whose career began in silents but moved ahead in small film roles playing both sides of the moral fence as both no-nonsense inspectors, judges or attorneys and as crime bosses or crooked politicos.
- Raised in California and attended various schools there. Later attended University of Southern California and University of Pennsylvania.
- Appears in four Oscar Best Picture nominees: O Peso da Lei (1929), Sede de Escândalo (1931), Grande Hotel (1932) and Flores do Pó (1941). Grand Hotel won Best Picture.
