Has three children with her husband Chris Ivery: two daughters, Stella Luna Pompeo Ivery (b. September 15, 2009) and Sienna May Ivery (b. August 2014), and a son, Eli Christopher Ivery (b. December 2016).

Married to music producer Chris Ivery. They first meet at a grocery store in Los Angeles, California. After they began dating, they learned that they both grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, 10 miles from each other.

Had another scene in Demolidor: O Homem sem Medo (2003) as Matt Murdock's (Ben Affleck) secretary Karen Page, but this was deleted from the theatrical version of the movie.

Was approached to play the role of Becky Scott in O Balconista 2 (2006), which she turned down because she had just finished the pilot for A Anatomia de Grey (2005). The role went to Rosario Dawson.

Suffers from asthma.

On November 9, 2007, she married her boyfriend of four years Chris Ivery in a civil ceremony in New York City. The only people in attendance were Mayor Michael Bloomberg and First Deputy Mayor Patti Harris, who served as witnesses to the ceremony.

Her mother, Kathleen (O'Keefe), passed away from an accidental painkiller overdose when she was four years old. Her father, Joseph Pompeo, is a salesman.

Ellen's paternal grandfather, Angelo Pompeo, was an Italian emigrant, born in Avellino. Ellen's paternal grandmother was of English, Irish and Scottish ancestry, and Ellen's mother's family is also of Irish ancestry.

Had a role in Brilho Eterno de uma Mente sem Lembranças (2004), which was deleted from the final cut.

Before A Anatomia de Grey (2005), she auditioned for a television pilot called "Secret Service". That show was not picked up by any television network.

She is the youngest of six children - she has five siblings who are at least eight years older than her. One of them is Maureen Pompeo.

She criticized media reports suggesting that she suffered from an eating disorder, calling the media irresponsible for promoting such rumors. She said that she was worried about the young girls who look up to her: "I don't want them to think I starved myself or don't eat, and that to be like me that's what they have to do.".

She was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Television at 6533 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California on April 29, 2025. Walk of Fame inductee Debbie Allen and television producer Shonda Rhimes were guest speakers at the ceremony.
