His father, Pepe, is a former banker. His mother, Conchita, is also a former banker who suffers from Alzheimer's disease and has been in a nursing home since 2005. Family fled Cuba when Tony was a child. They settled in Culver City, California, where his father found employment in a Tootsie Roll factory.

Plays the patriarch Ignacio Suarez on Ugly Betty (2006).

Originated the role of Rudy in the L.A. stage production of "Zoot Suit" and followed the show to Broadway. He also played Rudy in the film adaptation of the play.

Has two children by actress Ada Maris: Alejandro Plana and Isabel Plana.

Born in Cuba, he later starred in two movies whose plots deal with the 1959 revolution: Fidel (2002) (as dictator "Fulgencio Batista") and A Cidade Perdida (2005) (as "The Emcee"). He also co-starred in JFK: A Pergunta que Não Quer Calar (1991) as Cuban exile "Carlos Bringuier".

He was awarded the 1978 Drama-Logue Award for Outstanding Achievement Performance for "Zoot Suit" at the Mark Taper Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

Has two younger brothers, Victor and Oscar.

As a child Tony and his family fled Cuba and settled in California. In the updated version of the show "One Day at a Time" his character also fled from Cuba and settled in California.

Has played the father of characters played by America Ferrera on both "Ugly Betty" (2006) and "Superstore" (2015).

Apppeared on four films with Raul Julia: Romero (1989), Havana (1990), Rookie: Um Profissional do Perigo (1990) and Amazônia em Chamas (1994).

Cuban born Tony Plana also starred in the movie Havana as Julio Ramos, newspaper reporter. The plot of this movie is centered around the Cuban revolution of 1959, which a previous trivia item failed to mention.
