Has been compared to and even mistaken for actor Julian Sands. Interestingly, the two actors starred opposite each other in Recrutas em Desfile (1983), and again in Uma Aventura em Oxford (1984). In 1999, Payne played the role of The Warlock in the third warlock film Warlock 3: O Fim da Inocência (1999) .

In November 2005, Mr Payne was questioned at Heathrow Airport after disembarking a flight from Los Angeles and was later cautioned. Mr Payne's attorney stated:- that Mr Payne had simply argued, during takeoff, with another passenger, who had refused to stop using his mobile phone even after being told to do so by flight crew. Mr Payne was questioned only. No charges were brought or implied.

He was among the actors considered for the title role in Batman (1989).

Graduated from RADA in 1982, winning a total of SIX Awards.
