Son of a Baptist minister. Graduated from the University of Michigan, where he later taught English. Studied drama and playwriting at Yale University. Created a singular reputation for successful adaptations of novels into plays and screenplays, notably 'A Bell for Adano' and 'The World of Suzie Wong'.

Made his first mark on Broadway with his comedy play 'The Vinegar Tree', which ran for 233 performances at the Playhouse Theatre from November 1930.

Suffered from a degenerative eye disease from the early 1970's, which effectively curtailed his writing.

The cast of "Morning's at Seven" at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California was awarded the 2002 Back Stage Garland Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance.
