For the film O Grande Circo (1959), he had to learn how to be a catcher in a trapeze act. He later appeared professionally as a catcher.
In December 2002, he was stopped by a ticket agent at John Wayne Airport in Orange, CA, after letters in the name "David Nelson" were red flagged for terrorists. Two police officers recognized him and allowed him to board his flight.
Married June Blair at the Church of the Hills (Forest Lawn Memorial Park) in 1961. The couple had two sons, Daniel and James. After the marriage ended in divorce in 1975, Nelson remarried, and later adopted his second wife's three children from her previous marriage, including Teri Nelson Carpenter (later married to Chuck Woolery), and producer/assistant director John Nelson.
He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Television at 1501 Vine Street in Hollywood, CA on May 9, 1996.
Son of Ozzie Nelson and Harriet Nelson. Nephew of Don Nelson. Older brother of actor/singer Ricky Nelson. Uncle of Tracy Nelson, Matthew Nelson, Gunnar Nelson and Sam Nelson.

We would keep up the front of this totally problemless, happy-go-lucky group. There might have been a tremendous battle in our home, but if someone from outside came in, it would be as if the director yelled, "Roll 'em". We'd fall right into our stage roles.

[on his lack of sibling rivalry over Rick's larger fanbase] We were 3½ years apart, so when Rick was funny I laughed with everyone else. And when he became a popular singer, I rooted for him.
[Ozzie Nelson looking for some stage business for David to do in a scene] I was about 20 and because I smoked at the time, he said, 'Why don't you just go over and light a cigarette.' I said, 'You know, Dad, I don't think I could do that.' I tried, but it was so out of character for David Nelson -- and yet I did smoke.
