10 Disney Movies That Spoiled Their Own Endings
Image
Disney has acquired a reputation for crafting beautiful narratives from beginning to end. Known for their effective unfolding of events, Disney films have impeccable strength in writing and executing cohesive stories. Some Disney films, however, employ not-so-subtle foreshadowing that indicates to audiences where they might be headed, even in the face of an unexpected journey.

Whether it's a line of dialogue, the use of recurring imagery, or even what might be thought to be a one-off joke, Disney has had their fair share of heavy-handed hints as to where the film will conclude. This isn't always a negative reflection on the story. Sometimes, the inferences audiences make based on what's presented in the film make the ending even more impactful.

10 Oscar-Winning Animated Movies Every Film Buff Needs to See at Least Once
Image
When it comes to The Oscars, it's fair to say that it's one of the most anticipated celebrations in the film industry. For many filmmakers, winning an Oscar is the finest achievement possible, mostly because it's tied with a lot of recognition. Thus, movies like Gone with The Wind and Parasite remain with the audience because they have such a coveted position in the film business.

However, certain critics turn their noses up at animated movies. Although these films secure awards in their own right, they're typically undervalued because they are mostly associated with children. In turn, a lot of film buffs are missing out on the best Oscar-winning films of a generation.

Danny DeVito Appears as Live-Action Phil in Fan Trailer for 'Hercules' With Tom Holland, Russel Crowe, and Jim Carrey as Hades
Image
Fans of Disney’s Hercules are bracing themselves to see the Greek hero turned into one of the latest entrants into the House of Mouse’s never-ending parade of live-action remakes that will this year deliver Snow White and Lilo & Stitch to a (possibly) waiting audience. For those who cannot wait for the Herculean character to be realized on the big screen in some resemblance to real life, Multiverse of Movies on YouTube has you covered with a slightly creepy but technically pleasing AI-generated fan trailer which answers the question, what if Tom Holland played Hercules? Is anyone asking that question?

Hercules is currently marching through development with the Russo Brothers’ production company Agbo and Aladdin director Guy Ritchie behind the scenes. While the film is in early development, there have been whispers of Taron Egerton being eyed to take on the titular role, with fans wanting Wicked’s sensational...

Disney animated movies are some of the best and most beloved animated movies of all time. But while these animated films continue to have loyal fans, some of these fans who've seen their favorite animated movie multiple times have found a few plot holes in these beloved stories.

There are many plot holes in Disney animated movies, some of which have been explained one way or another. In some cases, fan theories perfectly explain something that would otherwise not make sense. In other cases, the very directors or writers behind these films have given extra context and detail to a...

Mufasa: The Lion King Box Office Passes Huge Global Milestone, Reversing Grim Outlook In Weekend 3
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King has hit a major milestone that pushes it much closer to profitability after three weekends. The 2024 movie is a prequel to Disney's photorealistic CG-animated 2019 remake, following the origin story of the future king Mufasa (Aaron Pierre). The Mufasa: The Lion King release hit an early snag in its opening weekend when it fell severely below its original projections, earning just $35.4 million in North America and taking No. 2 behind the other new release, Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Mufasa: The Lion King is projected to close out its third weekend in theaters with a cumulative box office total of $476 million worldwide. This makes it just the 10th movie of the year to pass the $475 million milestone and leaves it neck and neck with the current No. 9 movie of 2024, Venom: The Last Dance ($476.8 million). This news comes at the same time that...

After 28 Years, a Disney Animated Classic Finally Hits a Major Rotten Tomatoes Milestone
Image
Rotten Tomatoes has updated its reviews of the film The Hunchback of Notre Dame to give the animated Disney classic a Certified Fresh approval rating from critics. This has resulted in the film earning a score of 80% on the website.

The score was tabulated after a slew of reviews from 1996 were officially added to the site, giving the film an updated score. Critics from the era were largely impressed by the movie with several giving The Hunchback of Notre Dame perfect scores. Much of the reviews were particularly complimentary of the movie's animation, with one critic (Jeffrey Westhoff of the Northwest Herald) calling it "Disney's most powerful animated film since Bambi," predicting that the film would "20 years from now... be considered an authentic masterpiece." Indeed, more than two decades later, the film is beloved by many fans of Disney movies, though a lot of its love was there from most critics at the very start.

10 Disney Villains Too Hard to Hate (Even Though You Should)
Image
Disney villains can be a divisive topic of conversation. Obviously, the heroes are there for viewers to get on side with and support in whatever journey they're undertaking. However, particularly in more recent times, fans have become more inclined to see things from a villain's point of view, as well as enjoy what they're like.

Some are funny, while others deliver energy that livens up the movie and encourages fans to look forward to seeing them on the screen. They're crucial to any good animation, so much so that fans can't always despise them.

Macdonald also starred in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011), No Country for Old Men (2007), and Operation Mincemeat (2021).

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant about her new movie, The Radleys, the star also discussed her history with Brave. 30 Years Ago, The Lion King Made Disney The King Of The Box Office
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"The pitch for the story was a lion cub gets framed for murder by his uncle set to the music of Elton John. People said, 'What? Good luck with that.'" That's what producer Don Hahn said to Film School Rejects in 2018 of Disney's 1994 animated classic "The Lion King." It's an odd thing to say, given that it went on to become one of the most successful animated movies of all time. But that's looking back at it with the benefit of hindsight. At the time, it was viewed as a risk by the powers that be. It was a gamble that paid off handsomely, to put it lightly.

At the time, Disney was enjoying a fruitful period known as the Disney Renaissance,...

First looks at Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King tease big adventures for beloved Disney icons
Image
Shortly after denying Nelson Peltz a seat on the Disney board, the House of Mouse is sharing first looks at two of their upcoming films, Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King. The Hollywood Handle was the first to share the Mufasa image, which Disney debuted as part of the studio’s 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. The picture for Mufasa: The Lion King depicts a young Mufasa standing at the edge of a cliff while staring out at a desaturated Pride Land. The Barry Jenkins-directed sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 live-action hybrid focuses on Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, and is determined for his cub to follow in his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.

Disney Movies Based on Stories in the Public Domain
Image
When something goes into the public domain, it often becomes a target for filmmakers to snatch and adapt however they see fit. A notable example dropped in 2023 with Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, a slasher horror gorefest utilizing characters like Winnie, Piglet, and other beloved childhood icons from A. A. Milne. It’s a modern trend for filmmakers to jump on copyright-free opportunities.

Copyright laws do a lot to protect artists and their intellectual property, preventing the media from being snatched or reused without permission. But intellectual property laws don’t stick with something for all eternity, including copyright and trademarks. Once a copyright expires, often 95 years after publication or 70 years after the author’s death, a project is in the public domain, meaning owned by the public. Disney has a long list of those movies. Many of them even stemmed from public domain stories.

The Best Animated Movies Written by Women
Image
The majority of the movie industry is male-dominated, and animation is no exception. Studio heads that found success in early films were continuously given the opportunity to keep writing more stories, often leaving women out of equal opportunities. However, when given the chance, women writers have contributed to creating some of the best animated films to date.

With so many animated movies featuring women leads, it makes sense that having a woman writer only helps to bring a more authentic story to life. From tall tales of heroines to coming-of-age stories and fantasy, women writers are capable of building incredible worlds and writing even better stories.

The Lion King Roars with Record-Breaking $185M Opening Weekend
Comic-Con has been ruling the news over the past few days. But let's not forget that Disney's live-action-ish remake of The Lion King also roared into theaters. And speaking of which, today we hear that the new version of the classic tale has snagged a record-breaking opening weekend haul of $185 million. While actual final figures should be released on Monday, it seems a given that The Lion King has bested Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 as the top opening weekend for a movie released in July.

On top of that box office record, the movie also now holds the title for the biggest opening weekend ever for a PG-rated motion picture, and the ninth biggest opening weekend for any movie ever. Impressive, right? Well, remember that this brings the movie's current global total to $531 million. Now That's impressive.

While the film didn't bowl over critics, audiences seemed...

Disney's Hercules Remake Wants Alexander Skarsgard in the Lead?
Live-action remakes of classic Disney animated movies have been all the rage lately. From Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens to Guy Richie's most recent Aladdin starring Will Smith, Disney taking another swing at some of their classics doesn't seem like it's going to be ending any time soon. But this Alexander Skarsg&#229rd casting news is all merely a rumor at this point in time.

And speaking of rumors, today's gossip has me wondering about a previous bit of business from a year or so ago that said Vikings and The Hunger Games star Alexander Ludwig was the top pick for the Greek God. While I have...

Jeff Nathanson, who also wrote Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, penned the script, with Brenda Chapman credited with the story and the characters credited to Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts and Linda Woolverton....

‘Star Wars’: Lucasfilm’s False Promise for Behind-the-Scenes Diversity Continues With Jon Favreau TV Series
If Lucasfilm was looking for an exuberant reaction to the news that Jon Favreau would be writing and executive producing a new live-action TV series set in the “Star Wars” universe, picking International Women’s Day to announce it was perhaps not a great choice.

Per the official announcement, Favreau will be developing the series for Disney’s new “direct-to-consumer platform” — aka Disney’s own personal version of Netflix, which it has been developing for launch in 2019.

Favreau’s hiring isn’t too much of a surprise, given his long history of working on Disney-related projects, and he certainly has the relevant experience to take on a project of this scale. But the fact that Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to give a non-white man the opportunity to spearhead a “Star Wars” project on any sort of creative level cannot be ignored.

So, in the official announcement, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy...

‘The Lion King’ Turns 20: How the Disney Musical Became One of Broadway’s Best (Exclusive)
Matthew Broderick in O Rei Leão (1994)
The house lights dim, the sun rises on its first performance, and a powerful voice belts out: “Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba,” the first lyrics of “Circle of Life.” Lindiwe Dlamini, a member of the ensemble dressed in a white dress, holding African bird puppets in either hand with another on her head, nervously waits in the wings as she readies to take the stage in the opening number of Disney’s Broadway adaptation of The Lion King, the 1994 animated hit film about a lion cub who overcomes adversity and accepts responsibility for his pride and land to become king of the jungle.

“You didn’t know how the audience was going to receive it, [but] the energy was beyond belief,” Dlamini recalls to Et. The actress was 29 years old when she was cast in The Lion King, which opened on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Nov. 13, 1997. The show later transferred to the Minskoff Theatre in 2006, where...

Review: The Lion King – The Circle of Life Edition
Walt Disney was a canny marketer, cycling his films in and out of release, on and off television, through the years, recognizing it would appear fresh to younger viewers and fondly recalled by those at later stages in their lives. That practice has continued into the world of home video with the films on rotation and we’re now getting The Lion King: The Circle of Life Edition after having received Masterpiece Collection, Platinum Edition and Diamond Edition. The new edition is already available as Digital HD and hits disc today.

An interesting thing to consider about the story itself is that Simba is being trained by his father to one day succeed him as King. This connection with a parent and this effort towards being prepared to rule is entirely absent from any of the Disney Princess films.

Of course, the movie is a wildly entertaining musical which...

John Oliver Is Zazu in Disney's Lion King Live-Action Remake
John Oliver in Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (2014)
John Oliver, the host of HBO's popular weekly series Last Week Tonight, has become the latest to join the talented voice cast for Disney's live-action Lion King reboot. The actor will be lending his voice to Zazu, the colorful bird who serves as an adviser to King Mufasa (James Earl Jones). In the original 1994 animated classic, Zazu was voiced by Mr. Bean star Rowan Atkinson, with Jeff Bennett voicing the character in the new animated series The Lion Guard.

The Wrap broke the news of this casting, which comes just a few months after Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner signed on to voice Pumbaa and Timon, respectively. Director Jon Favreau will utilize the same type of technology that brought the photo-realistic animals to life in the filmmaker's 2016 blockbuster The Jungle Book. John Oliver also joins Donald Glover as Simba and the iconic James Earl Jones, reprising his voice role as...

Jeff Nathanson Will Write Live-Action Version Of The Lion King
Though reaction to the announcement of a live-action remake of Disney’s The Lion King has been somewhat mixed, the studio is forging ahead with the project. Having set Jon Favreau to direct the film, screenwriter Jeff Nathanson (Tower Heist, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) has now been hired to tackle the adaptation.

Disney are clearly seeking to capitalise on the rapturous reception The Jungle Book received earlier this year. Filmmaker Jon Favreau took the classic Disney film and reinvigorated it by returning to certain elements of the source material – being Rudyard Kipling’s book. He then delivered a CGI-live action hybrid movie that succeeded on every level. With The Lion King, however, there is no specific source material to incorporate, beyond the original film, unless writer Jeff Nathanson brings additional elements of Shakespeare’s Hamlet into the story – of which the 1994 film featured narrative aspects.

Strange Magic review
George Lucas produces the Ilm animated fantasy, Strange Magic. Here's Mark's review of a curious genre mash-up...

Since George Lucas got out of the Star Wars business, he's been lending his Hollywood heft to some long-gestating passion projects that might be difficult to produce independently elsewhere. He started developing Red Tails, a war movie about the Tuskegee airmen, back in 1988 and eventually served as producer and an uncredited co-director on the 2012 movie.

Lucasfilm's latest, Strange Magic, is directed by Oscar-winning sound designer Gary Rydstrom, but it's also been around for much longer than you'd think. 15 years ago, while working on that pesky prequel trilogy, Lucas started thinking about making a film for his daughters. “Just like Star Wars was designed for 12-year-old boys,” Lucas told Wired upon the film's Us release in January, “Strange Magic was designed for 12-year-old girls.”

If that sounds a little reminiscent of when John Travolta...

Strange Magic movie review: bad spell
Apparently this was inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but it has about as much in common with that as Burger King does with Macbeth. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Strange Magic is the first animated feature George Lucas has had a hand in since 1988’s The Land Before Time, and he should have left well enough alone.

Lucas gets a story credit and served as executive producer, but this has the whiff of a vanity project for cowriter and director Gary Rydstrom, making his feature debut. Yes, legendary sound designer Gary Rydstrom, who’s won seven Oscars in that field and has created some of the most memorable movie noises ever for films including Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, and Minority Report, but who, the evidence of this movie suggests, has no business writing and directing a movie.

George Lucas
Review: 'Strange Magic' is a toxic and unpleasant formula for kids
George Lucas
Every now and then, I find myself suddenly and unexpectedly angry at George Lucas, but not for reasons that have anything to do with "Star Wars." There has been a refrain we've heard from him over and over during the past couple of decades, where he talks about returning to his roots and making experimental films that could never exist inside the studio system, movies that aren't created to be commercial product, but that come from a very personal place. And over and over, those comments lead nowhere and nothing happens. I'd love to see him do it, though. I have a huge fondness for "Thx-1138," Lucas's first feature film, which evolved out of a student film he made. I take Lucas at his word that commercial filmmaking was never meant to be the complete detour it became after "American Graffiti" and "Star Wars" both blew up into mega-hits,...

‘Strange Magic’ Review: George Lucas’ Off-Key Kiddie Dud Will Make You Miss Jar Jar Binks (Video)
George Lucas
Rubber-faced characters and a seemingly ceaseless parade of repurposed pop ditties combine to make what might be the worst animated feature Disney has ever released

Well, now we know what a Las Vegas show designed for eight-year-olds would look like.

The advance marketing on producer George Lucas’ “Strange Magic” suggested a retread of the not-all-that-memorable 2013 cartoon “Epic.” And yes, this fairies-versus-bugs story does recall that earlier film, but “Magic” also ladles in unwieldy dollops of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Moulin Rouge!” and a particularly long and excruciating episode of “American Idol.”

Lucasfilm's Animated 'Strange Magic' Trailer is Silliness & Pop Tunes
Just over a week ago, we were all surprised to learn of the existence of a new animated movie from Lucasfilm called Strange Magic that Disney was going to release through their Touchstone Pictures banner in January. Now the first trailer has arrived to show us why this film is getting a hasty, last minute promotional push and release. If "from the mind of George Lucas" isn't enough to turn you off in this day and age, the trailer should do it. This looks like a comedic version of Epic (which already wasn't a good animated movie) chock full of pop song covers. This just looks terrible and devoid of any charm. Watch? Here's the first trailer for Gary Rydstrom's Strange Magic, originally from Yahoo: Strange Magic is directed by Gary Rydstrom (of the Pixar shorts Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation and Lifted) from a screenplay he wrote with...
