- His comic strip 'Bringing Up Father', distributed internationally by King Features Syndicate, ran for 87 years (1913-2000).
- First job was as an errand boy at 'The Republican' newspaper, where he eventually created his first comic strip, 'Alma and Oliver'.
- In 1935, he hired Zeke Zekley as an assistant. Zekley would make major contributions to the strip 'Bringing Up Father', in both writing and art, in the following two decades, and would later draw the 'Bachelor at Large' comic strips seen on The Tab Hunter Show (1960).
- 'Bringing Up Father' made him a wealthy man, and during the 1940s he lived on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.
