Her son Tommy Wyman has Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, which is a rare genetic condition characterized by broad thumbs and toes, short stature, distinctive facial features, and varying degrees of intellectual disability.

Her father was president of McDonald Associates Inc, manufacturers' representatives in the plumbing field. Her mother was an industrial relations assistant with Eastman Kodak.

She attended the University of Illinois and graduated from the Drama Division of the Juilliard School.

She met her husband, actor Nick Wyman when they both acted on stage in "Of Mice and Men" at the Pittsburgh Public Theatre in 1978.
