Quick Links 'The Reckoning' Is a Gripping Murder Mystery with a Top-Tier Cast 'The Reckoning' Fails to Deliver at the Box Office Dafoe and Hardy's Exceptional Hollywood Careers
Now regarded as some of Hollywood's finest performers and most sought-after leading men, Willem Dafoe, Paul Bettany, and Tom Hardy were still paving a path for themselves in the entertainment industry when they joined forces for the 2003 murder mystery The Reckoning. Set in 14th-century England, the engrossing picture features Bettany as a priest on the run from the church after he commits adultery, finding sanctuary with an eclectic band of traveling actors who become swept up in a controversial murder trial.
The Reckoning failed to become a massive critical or commercial success, but it did feature exceptional performances by its talented ensemble cast, with the underrated flick helping pave the way for the blossoming careers of Bettany and...

Known for his commanding presence and impressive skill with prose, Sir Ian McKellen is among the best actors of a generation who can bring depth to any role he’s given, create great chemistry with other actors and capture the audience’s attention whenever on screen. Appearing in several films over decades, the actor has performed in all sorts of genres and has consistently chosen projects that engage with the viewer, while also highlighting great filmmaking on display.
At the same time, some dedicated fans may assume that Ian McKellen’s work extends to only franchise-heavy material, however, the actor’s expansive filmography ranges in size of spectacle, drama and narrative scale, where no matter the film, Ian McKellen commits himself to the performance and helps make each project that much better. Moreover, with each Ian McKellen film offering something different to say to viewers, it re-establishes how truly versatile...

Based on the series of young-adult novels by Eoin Colfer, Artemis Fowl landed in the nest that is Disney Plus recently, and has garnered a very-mixed, often negative response from fans and critics alike in the small time it’s been available. I, then, tried to avoid these reviews so I could sit down and watch it with an open mind, as I try to do with every film I see.
With the horrendous virus causing the world to go into lockdown, we’ve had a few months of not-too-many new movies coming out, especially bigger blockbusters. Sure, we’ve seen some release digitally or on streaming platforms, but they’ve been few and far between. Artemis Fowl, then, is something that may appeal to those who...

I’m sure there must be some appeal to the Artemis Fowl book series that serves as the basis for this film adaptation of the same name. However, whatever might be there is certainly not translated to the movie. Artemis Fowl is something both bizarre and bland, boring while also being deeply strange. What could have been a fun and somewhat different kind of blockbuster for kids is instead just a big ugly mess. Pulled from a handful of different dates on the calendar over the last two years, it’s now being dumped on Disney Plus tomorrow, saving it from the box office failure that was undoubtedly in its future. The movie is a fantasy adventure, based on two of the first books in the Artemis Fowl franchise. I’ll keep the synopsis brief, since it frankly doesn’t make any sense, anyhow. Here, we’re introduced to Artemis...

Originally destined to be a tentpole theatrical release in May, Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of the much loved Eoin Colfer books instead premieres as a Disney+ exclusive. It’s a shame in a way, since Branagh’s movie is colorful, kinetic, and highly cinematic with several rollicking set pieces and some Harry Potter-level world building.
On the other hand, the streaming release does at least save fans of the books feeling cheated out of the price of a cinema ticket and a bucket of popcorn as well as a morally ambiguous and frequently ruthless main character. As many predicted, the least interesting thing about Artemis Fowl is Artemis himself.
A 12-year-old genius and criminal mastermind, Fowl Jr. played by newcomer Ferdia Shaw, is the son of wealthy Irish businessman Artemis Fowl Sr. (Colin Farrell). The elder Fowl has been accused of stealing various priceless items from museums including the Rosetta...

Kenneth Branagh directs this family-fantasy-by-numbers adapted from Eoin Colfer’s bestselling teen novels
After the film version of Cats, the world agreed that Judi Dench could never, should never do anything as bizarre as her performance as Old Deuteronomy, the bafflingly attired matriarch of the Jellicle cat tribe, wearing a fur coat in addition to her normal fur. But now Dench might actually have topped her feline folly, in this family fantasy adventure, adapted by Conor McPherson and Hamish McColl from Eoin Colfer’s bestselling novels about the teen Irish hero in touch with magical forces and directed by Kenneth Branagh. She plays someone called Commander Root, who is the security chief of the fairy peoples who live deep underground.
Dench is styling a very notable military-style outfit in emerald green, which makes her look like some forgotten intergalactic villain from Star Wars. Root has a growly, twangy, slightly Cornish...

For every “Twilight,” there is a “Divergent.” For every “Resident Evil,” there is a “Warcraft.” And for every “Harry Potter,” there are a number of movies just like “Artemis Fowl.” Disney’s adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s popular Ya series has been mired in development hell for nearly two decades, first cycling through producers and directors, only to weather an association with Harvey Weinstein, face a series of delayed release dates, and finally end up on the Mouse House’s streaming service in the middle of a pandemic.

Josh Gad is going the moon courtesy of disaster movie maestro Roland Emmerich. Rather than literally journeying into space like Tom Cruise, Gad is the first actor cast in Moonfall, the next big, loud blockbuster movie from Emmerich, which as the very apt title suggests, will see the moon, well, fall.
Moonfall has been written by Emmerich alongside 2012 co-writer Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen. The movie's plot kicks into action when the moon is knocked from its orbit by a mysterious force and is sent hurtling on a collision course with Earth. Life as we know it hangs in the balance, as it so often does in a Roland Emmerich movie, and with just weeks to go before impact, a ragtag team is sent on a seemingly impossible mission to land on the lunar surface and save humanity.

Disney+ has slotted a June 12 premiere date for Artemis Fowl, Disney’s family adventure film based on the best-selling Ya book by Eoin Colfer. The pic was meant to be released in theaters post-Memorial Day weekend, but was moved to the streaming service amid the coronavirus crisis.
Newcomer Ferdia Shaw stars in the title role alongside Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Josh McGuire, Nikesh Patel and Adrian Scarborough, with Colin Farrell and Judi Dench.
Artemis Fowl follows a 12-year-old genius (Shaw), a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he desperately tries to save his father who has been kidnapped. In order to pay his ransom, Artemis must infiltrate an ancient, underground civilization—the amazingly advanced world of fairies—and bring the kidnapper the Aculos, the fairies’ most powerful and coveted magical device. Disney set the streaming-only premiere date for live-action sci-fi fantasy “Artemis Fowl” on its Disney Plus service worldwide — hoping it gives more juice to the subscription VOD product while theaters are shuttered.
“Artemis Fowl,” directed by Kenneth Branagh, will be available exclusively on Disney Plus beginning Friday, June 12. It had originally been set for a May 29 theatrical debut.

Disney has promised that some of the delayed movies being held back for later release will actually debut on their streaming service Disney+. They announced a couple of weeks ago that the first straight-to-streaming premiere would be Artemis Fowl. Though, at the time, they didn't indicate when fans and subscribers could expect to see the new movie appear on the streaming app service. Today, Disney announced a summer streaming premiere for Artemis Fowl on Disney+ while also providing a new look at the movie with a never-before-seen TV trailer.
Disney's new live-action film Artemis Fowl will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning Friday, June 12. You can check out some new footage to get a taste of what you're in store for with the latest sneak peek delivered by Disney earlier today.

Disney has spent the better part of the day completely rearranging its upcoming movie release slate after a number of tentpole blockbusters were delayed. They have given Black Widow, Eternals and the rest of the Marvel Phase 4 completely new release dates, causing an McU chain reaction that runs all the way into Phase 5. They also announced new release dates for Mulan and Indiana Jones 5. One movie that didn't get a new release date is Artemis Fowl. But we now know it will be going straight to streaming with an exclusive debut on Disney+.
The Walt Disney Studios announced today that it will debut its new live-action feature film Artemis Fowl exclusively on Disney+. The release date will be announced soon. With movie theaters closed to hopefully no later than early June, the major studios have a permission slip to test out big pic releases in the home. Now, they’re not so insane that they’ll burn down the house to keep warm. Major movies like Disney’s Mulan and Black Widow which have the potential to do $1 billion at the global box office, thus triggering off a downstream of ancillary riches, aren’t the types of movies you’d debut in the home.
However, in the roll-of-the-die, Dreamworks Animation/Universal’s Trolls World Tour and now Disney’s former post Memorial Day weekend release Artemis Fowl are worthy experiments given how studios’ hands are currently tied in the current frozen theatrical marketplace. Disney will announce the release date for Artemis Fowl sometime in the near future for its streaming service.

Worries about the look of the main character turned to smiles and a healthy run at the box office for one of last year’s most pleasant surprises. So it makes sense that, when starting to think about a second Paddington, the producers might want co-writer/director Paul King to return, and Deadline brings word that he is now aboard. King, who helped develop the story of the original with writer Hamish McColl, is going to be even more closely involved from the start for this one, working alongside regular collaborator Simon Farnaby to create the sequel’s narrative. We'd expect Farnaby, who showed up to memorable effect in Paddington, to also play some role this time.Little else is known about the film: we don’t know what our furry hero will be up to this time, but it’s a fair bet that his human family, including Hugh Bonneville’s Mr. Brown,...

Empire's latest issue isn't all about Star Wars, and to prove it, here's an image from a long time ago but closer to home. It's been a while since Mr Hitler crossed swords with Walmington-on-Sea's finest - the last episode of Dad's Army aired in 1977 - but the khaki-clad boys are back in action and desperate to prove they're more than remainder stock while the British Army is out giving the Nazis the old what-for. The movie features about half the cream of British acting. The top half, in the case of this first teaser poster.Left to right in this identity parade of misfits, triers and high-street heroes are the slightly shifty Cockney Private Walker (Danny Mays), the vague Private Godfrey (Michael Gambon), daydreamy Private Pike (Blake Harrison), blustery Captain Mainwaring (Toby Jones), the wry Sergeant Wilson (Bill Nighy), willing but limited Lance-Corporal Jones (Tom Courtenay) and Scots undertaker Private Frazer (Bill Paterson). The might of the Wehrmacht haven't a hope, especially once Godrey can remember where he left his rifle.Directed by...

Chicago – It may prove hard to recall an era of talking creatures in live-action movies before the napalm hellfire of “Alvin and the Chipmunks” or “The Smurfs.” But, lest we forget, “Babe” has more Academy Awards than “The Master.” Arriving at the coy and wise time of the film year where expectations are either golden or underneath the barrel, talking bear Paddington arrives stateside as a well-behaved throwback to brighter days for a simple genre, with an efficient sense of humor and a few globs of vision, too.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Voiced with clear-eyed wonder by Ben Whishaw, cheery children’s book icon Paddington is a Peruvian bear with both a refined English vernacular and ravenousness for orange marmalade, attributes learned from British artifacts left by visiting explorer Montgomery Clyde. When Paddington’s home is destroyed in an earthquake, the young bear stows away to foggy London to meet the revered adventurer.

January films are often rather ghastly. Whether they be comedy, action, or otherwise, chances are you will have an unfortunate time in the theater when seeing a film in January, unless you are seeing the awards contenders from the previous year. Family films are also quite the crapshoot, with most of them being rather insufferable. Combine the two together, and you are headed for the disaster. So, when the swath of positive reviews of Paddington started to come out, I was a bit shocked. You have to be joking! But as it turns out, this story about a bear becoming part of a middle-class British family is exactly the movie I wanted to see. The bear I speak of is the titular Paddington (his "bear name" is a little too hard to pronounce), voiced by the charming Ben Whishaw. Decades earlier, his aunt (Imelda Staunton) and uncle (Michael Gambon) were...

As such, this reviewer can not vouch for the recently released song’s presence in any scene alterations for the North American release. I would, however, like to publicly request that Mr. Williams’ song “Happy” be pulled from the radio. Thank you.
A big screen, CG-assisted adaptation of Michael Bond’s beloved Paddington Bear book series could have gone so horribly wrong, becoming yet another offender in the line-up of pandering kids-aimed film atrocities like Yogi Bear, Garfield, and The Smurfs. Thankfully made with clear love for the material and smart execution from writer-director Paul King, Paddington is instead a welcome breath of fresh air in a family film market that,...

Title: Paddington Director: Paul King Starring: Ben Whishaw, Nicole Kidman, Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Samuel Joslin and Madeleine Harris Finding your rightful place in society, no matter how polite and full of heart you are, can be a taunting experience for anyone. But that harrowing adventure can be even more terrifying for a young person-or bear-who has unwavering faith in the kindness of others. That charmingly innocent confidence is powerfully tested in the new compelling family comedy, ‘Paddington,’ which is based on the ‘Paddington Bear’ children’s books by Michael Bond. Bill Nighy and Toby Jones are set to lead the cast of a movie adaptation of the classic 1970s BBC sitcom "Dad's Army".
Set in a fictional south-coast English town in 1940, the original comedy ran for nine series and followed the farcical exploits of a Home Guard platoon, a group of local volunteers ruled ineligible for military service due to advanced age or extenuating circumstances.
This platoon would be on the front line in the event of an invasion across the English Channel, but the series mostly got mileage out of its cast of eccentric characters.
In the film version, Jones will play the pompous and diminutive Captain Mainwaring, Nighy is set as the dry Sergeant Wilson. "Johnny English Reborn" director Oliver Parker and scribe Hamish McColl will serve in the same capacities on this film, while Damian Jones ("The Iron Lady") will produce.

Despite all the brands currently being given a new coat of movie paint – the toys, the games, the sweets – we’re not sure we would have predicted Dad’s Army going the same way, even though rumours of a movie have floated for years and film audiences met them once before in 1971.
