Ancient Historian Reviews Brad Pitt's Greek War Epic 'Troy'
Image
It's been 20 years since the massive sword-and-sandals blockbuster, Troy, was released and became a box office hit with audiences. Wolfgang Petersen's spectacle was an all-star affair, featuring Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Diane Kruger, Brian Cox, Sean Bean, Brendan Gleeson, and Peter O'Toole. While the film was ostensibly based on Homer's epic poem The Iliad from the eighth century BC, it deviates heavily from the source material — heavily enough that a recent video spent more than an hour dissecting the movie. Ancient Greek historian Roel Konijnendijk, a fellow and tutor at Oxford, broke Troy down for History Hit on YouTube.

Of course, Konijnendijk highlights some of the little, goofier historical inaccuracies throughout Troy. For instance, the placing of coins on a dead man's eyes during a funeral ritual. There are "some animals that definitely didn't exist in the Greek world," with the historian having a laugh at one particular scene.

King Saud (2024) Movie Review: A haphazardly staged B-movie that doesn’t even qualify as ‘so bad that it’s good’
Mark Toma
Director Mark Toma, who also stars as one of the two LA detectives investigating a double murder is inspired by Hollywood Neo-noirs that take its pulpy premise to the absolute extreme. For one, it consists of characters who feel they would star in one of those low-budget TV movies that run on cable on repeat and gain cult status. It also presents a premise and progression that is – for lack of a better word – offensive, and socially unaware. So, in that vein, “King Saud” has the inclination to become one of those trashy movies that we love to revisit. However, what we get is a haphazardly staged B-movie that doesn’t even qualify as ‘so bad that it’s good.’

The story opens with the aforementioned murders. A prostitute and a Saudi Prince are brutally murdered and decapitated. Detective Wolfe (played by Toma) is assigned to the case along with...

Brad Pitt's 20-Year-Old Historical Epic Is Leaving Netflix
Image
Gladiator's breakout success spawned a string of swords-and-sandals films like 300, King Arthur, and Alexander. Wolfgang Petersen's Troy also revived a genre that peaked during the golden age of cinema.

Netflix is removing Troy from its streaming library on Dec. 1. Wolfgang Peterson's 2004 war epic was also Brad Pitt's bid in the swords-and-sandals genre, which surged in popularity after Gladiator's breakout run at the box office. Released at the height of the trend, Troy was a modest success, earning $497 million against its $185 million budget. The film featured a powerhouse cast headlined by Pitt and Eric Bana; Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean, Brian Cox, Brendan Gleeson, Peter O'Toole, Rose Byrne, and Diane Kruger also joined the ensemble. A loose adaptation of Homer's The Illiad, Troy depicted Achilles and Hector's feud against the backdrop of the Trojan War.

Brad Pitt's Painfully Ironic Troy Injury Is Still Hard to Believe
Image
For over 30 years, Hollywood leading man Brad Pitt has been dazzling audiences all across the world with his engaging and eclectic performances, starring in a slew of unforgettable hits like Seven, Fight Club, Inglourious Basterds, and World War Z (among countless others). There is no project or character that has proven too intimidating for the seasoned star, and in 2004, he further ventured out and tackled the historical war genre when he appeared as Achilles in the Iliad-inspired epic Troy.

Pitt appeared alongside a large ensemble cast, including Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, and Diane Kruger, in the blockbuster hit, yet much like the great Greek warrior he portrayed in the film, the Academy Award-winning actor faced his own unique set of trials and tribulations. During production of the engrossing epic, Pitt ironically suffered a painful injury to his Achilles tendon that set filming back several weeks. Yet, the unfortunate hiccup did not hinder the final product,...

15 Most Hated Movie Characters Of All Time
Image
Hated movie characters aren't always villains, with actions that make them detestable, sometimes more than the antagonists themselves. Actors give memorable performances as unlikable characters, generating discussions and hatred, even if not intended by the audience. Characters like Marla Grayson and Dolores Umbridge create discomfort, showcasing reprehensible actions with no acknowledgment of their evil.

While there have been plenty of likable villains and charismatic antiheroes that audiences have loved, the most hated movie characters are entertaining because of how satisfying it is to loathe them. Movie history is full of despicable human beings whose only purpose in life is to make life miserable for the heroes and regular people alike. Nothing will help the audience get behind a hero faster than by pitting them against the worst possible villains available. Some of the best performances of all time have been by actors portraying incredibly unlikable characters, meaning the most hated...

Orlando Bloom Gets Brutally Candid About Filming Historical Epic Troy: 'Am I Allowed to Say All of These Things?'
Image
Orlando Bloom didn't enjoy playing Paris in Troy, struggling to relate to the character. Despite a hefty budget, Troy was a box office hit with a strong worldwide gross of $497.4 million. Critics were divided on Troy, praising the spectacle but criticizing the emotionless depiction of the Trojan War.

Orlando Bloom hated being part of the movie Troy, as he had no way of relating to his character in the historical epic, and subsequently blanked filming the movie out of his mind. The 2004 Wolfgang Peterson-directed movie is loved by many, but for Bloom, playing the role of Paris is one that he doesnt look back on with much love or enthusiasm, as he didnt want to be in the movie.
