Emma Thompson recently admitted that she does not consider her work on the Harry Potter franchise a significant addition to her decorated creative resume.
Speaking at a Locarno Film Festival panel after the weekend’s Leopard Club Award event, Thompson spoke on a wide array of subjects, including the Monica Lewinsky controversy, being asked out by Donald Trump, and her role in Harry Potter.
In the series, Thompson played Sybil Trelawney, the Divination professor at Hogwarts who could read tea leaves and had some crucial prophecies about Harry Potter’s life.

The Addams Family tree just got a little bigger. "Wednesday" season 2 marks the arrival of the oldest and trickiest member of the Addams clan, Grandmama Addams, and she's both a massive departure from previous iterations of the character while being brilliantly Tim Burton-branded all at the same time. Instead of the almost feral-looking, birds-nest-hair-wielding Grandmama we're used to, this version is a far more refined woman who seems more likely to ask her magic mirror who's the fairest of them all than spend her days stirring unsightly recipes over a cauldron. It makes sense, really, what with legendary British actor Dame Joanna Lumley taking on the role here.
Famous in the United Kingdom for her incredibly elegant voice, Lumley began her career in television in the British spy thriller series "The New Avengers", as well as appearing in one of the essential James Bond movies, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service,...

Miriam Margolyes has joined a growing chorus of former Harry Potterstars and Hollywood actors that have spoken out against J.K. Rowling's anti-transgender rhetoric. The actress, who portrayed Professor Pomona Sprout in two of the blockbuster film adaptations, shared her stance on the controversial author on a recent episode of the A Gay Old Time podcast. She made it clear that she doesn't agree with Rowling's opinions (which she deems "too harsh"), but also encouraged a "gentler" approach from those on both sides of the debate.
"I don't agree with her about the trans issue – I think her opinion is too harsh," Margolyes said of Rowling. However, she also expressed her disapproval of the reaction from those that do not align with her beliefs. "It's not good to be so furious. We should be gentler with each other. We're all oppressed by sections of the community. Let's just be kinder,...

Miriam Margolyes, who played Professor Sprout in the original Harry Potter series and is well-known in her native Britain, has become the latest Potter-affiliated person to offer an opinion on Jk Rowling's anti-transgender comments.
Interest in the franchise has renewed now that HBO is making a new version of Harry Potter, this time for TV. Margolyes made her comments while appearing on the podcast A Gay Old Time, via The Independent. “I don't agree with her about the trans issue – I think her opinion is too harsh,” she said of Rowling. Miriam Margolyes is the latest Harry Potter alum to take a stance against J.K. Rowling‘s ongoing anti-transgender rhetoric.
The actress who played Professor Pomona Sprout in the big-screen franchise adaptation of Rowling’s YA novels called out the author for her “harsh” comments, as well as the “fury” it’s stoked at her from within the transgender community.

The BBC documentary Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone breached one of the broadcaster’s editorial guidelines by failing to disclose a child’s connection to Hamas, a report published on Monday has found.
The corporation came under fire in February when one of the 13-year-old subjects in the film, a young boy called Abdullah Al-Yazouri, was found to be the son of Hamas’ deputy minister of agriculture.
The BBC pulled the doc from its streaming service, BBC iPlayer, and apologized for the “unacceptable flaws” in airing the program. It said at the time that production company Hoyo Films “assured [the BBC] that no payments were made to members of Hamas or its affiliates, either directly, in kind, or as a gift”.
A review by Peter Johnston — independent of BBC News and current affairs — was ordered and made available on Monday. The review team identified and considered 5000 documents from a 10-month production period,...

“In my many years of making editorial calls across the BBC, this is as tough as it gets.” Those were the words of Tim Davie when he addressed the BBC’s employees on June 11 amid simmering discontent over Gaza. He could not have known then that it was about to get a whole lot harder.
The director general has endured a brutal week after the UK national broadcaster live-streamed scenes of Glastonbury act Bob Vylan chanting “death to the Idf” and moaning about “working for f***ing Zionists,” despite producers acknowledging before the festival that the punk band was at “high risk” of offending viewers.
The avoidable editorial error collided with Channel 4 broadcasting Gaza: Doctors Under Attack, a documentary that the BBC formally scotched just days earlier amid a rancorous dispute over the impartiality of the filmmakers involved in telling the stories of warzone medics. More than 600 actors, directors and journalists have signed an open letter to BBC Director-General Tim Davie demanding immediate scheduling of Gaza: Medics Under Fire, a documentary on healthcare teams operating amid conflict in Gaza. The appeal, coordinated by UK Screen Industry and the Britain Palestine Media Centre, features names such as Susan Sarandon, Mike Leigh, Harriet Walter and Channel 4 News International Editor Lindsey Hilsum.

The limited series at Netflix is described as a “passionate and heart-rending will-they/won’t-they love triangle exploring themes of freedom, duty, identity and love in all its forms. This fresh take is true to Wharton’s novel but will speak to a new generation as we traverse the ballrooms and bedrooms of these young people, asking the question what is love — and what is lust? And should we ultimately be driven by our heads or by our hearts?”

Netflix has ordered The Age Of Innocence, a limited series based on Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Emma Frost has penned the adaptation and will serve as executive producer and showrunner on the Chernin Entertainment production.
The series was quietly greenlighted earlier this year and has been prepping for a fall start of production in Europe for a couple of months now. Netflix would not confirm the pickup to Deadline, instead opting to announce it on World Book Day.
A fresh take on Edith Wharton’s classic novel of forbidden love in 19th century New York, The Age Of Innocence is a will-they/won’t-they love triangle exploring themes of freedom, duty, identity and love in all its forms.
The project is clearly geared toward the wide global fanbase of Netflix’s hit period romance drama Bridgerton, also a book adaptation.

Everyone's experienced that one co-worker who insists on dropping an air biscuit around the printer and copier, loves to warm up the stinkiest fish in a microwave, or forgets to flush the toilet after they go. For actors and crew members, they too need to put up with other people's disgusting on-set habits. It could be anything from a refusal to take a shower on a daily basis to someone's butt adding unnecessary sound effects to every scene. Whichever way, it's a gross experience for the people who need to deal with the perpetrator and put up with whatever's going down.
What's surprising is how many top A-list talent possess these "special" quirks. For instance, Robert Pattinson and Brad Pitt aren't renowned for being the cleanest people on a film set, so it's probably best to apply a 20-meter radius when around them on a particularly hot day. Also, it's...

Exclusive: The production company that houses Angels In The Asylum, the beleaguered British indie film starring Simon Pegg, has effectively filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Aita Films Limited intends to appoint law firm Debenhams Ottaway to oversee the administration process. The development follows Angels In The Asylum halting filming halfway through its shoot after running out of cash, as Deadline revealed last month.
In the UK, company directors can put a firm into administration if it can’t pay its debts. Deadline has previously reported that Angels In The Asylum’s 150 crew members are owed at least £600,000 in wages, while suppliers are also out of pocket significantly.
The administration process is similar to Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but unlike in the U.S., where directors remain in control of the business, Debenhams Ottaway will take charge of Aita Films’ operations and will attempt to restructure the company financially so that it can pay creditors.

Exclusive: Angels in the Asylum’s producers have sent a profuse apology to unpaid crew after Deadline revealed that the Simon Pegg indie film had to halt shooting amid funding issues.
In an email to colleagues on Friday morning, producers Rob Sorrenti and Heather Greenwood said they were “truly sorry that we find ourselves in this terrible situation.” They added: “It was never what we could possibly have imagined when we started this journey.”
Angels in the Asylum set out to tell an important story about women incarcerated against their wishes, but had to pause production indefinitely last month after running out of cash. Around 150 crew members are owed at least £600,000 in wages, suppliers have not been paid, and producers have also gone without a salary. A portion of cast pay was ringfenced in an escrow account under Equity union agreements.

Period drama Angels In The Asylum, starring Simon Pegg, has been forced to shut down as the production hits financial difficulties.
Starring Simon Pegg and Katherine Waterston, the British period drama Angels In The Asylum has been forced to stop filming due to cashflow difficulties. The directorial debut of filmmaker Rob Sorrenti, the film was midway through its month-long shoot when production was brought to an abrupt halt, according to a report published by Deadline.
Angels In The Asylum sounds like a passion project for those involved. Rob Sorrenti, a filmmaker previously known for his shorts and documentaries, began developing his feature in 2008, and after years of work, managed to attract an impressive cast. Pegg (pictured above in TV’s The Undeclared War) and Waterston are joined by Minnie Driver, Aurora Perrineau and Miriam Margolyes to name a few.

Miriam Margolyes On Schwarzenegger (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Miriam Margolyes never held back in interviews, and her take on working with Arnold Schwarzenegger was no exception. The Harry Potter actor once revealed a particularly foul experience with the action star while filming End of Days in 1999. According to her, Schwarzenegger intentionally passed gas in her face during a break between takes – an act she neither forgot nor forgave.
“He’s a bit too full of himself, and I don’t care for him at all,” Margolyes said on the I’ve Got News For You podcast. “He’s a Republican, which I don’t like. He was actually quite rude. He farted in my face. Now, I fart, of course, I do—but I don’t fart in people’s faces. He did it deliberately, right in my face.”

The BBC’s director-general Tim Davie has admitted there were “unanswered questions” that should have been “followed up” over the company’s scandal-hit Gaza documentary.
Davie defended his journalists to the U.K.’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee and claimed no one needs “any prodding” on an independent investigation while speaking at a parliamentary inquiry in London.
Last week, the corporation apologized and removed Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone, about the lives of three children caught in the Israel-Gaza war, from its streaming service BBC iPlayer. It was discovered that one of the 13-year-old subjects, Abdullah Al-Yazouri, is the son of Hamas’ deputy minister of agriculture, leading to widespread accusations against the BBC, including being “manipulated by terrorists.”

The fallout continues over the BBC’s airing of a documentary narrated by the son of a Hamas official.
Earlier this week, the corporation apologized and removed Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone, about the lives of three children caught in the Israel-Gaza war, from its streaming service BBC iPlayer. It was discovered that one of the 13-year-old subjects, Abdullah Al-Yazouri, is the son of Hamas’ deputy minister of agriculture.
A statement from the corp, which can be read in full here, said it takes “full responsibility” for “unacceptable flaws” in commissioning the program, stating that production company behind the doc Hoyo Films acknowledged that the BBC were not informed of Abdullah Al-Yazouri’s Hamas ties. The Sunday Times reported that the child was paid around £700 for his part in the film, given to him via his sister’s back account.

The corporation has removed Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone from its streaming service BBC iPlayer, acknowledging “unacceptable flaws”. The row over the BBC’s Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone documentary has just deepened.
Five hundred people from the entertainment world, including Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, Riz Ahmed, Ken Loach, Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett, and Game of Thrones actor Indira Varma, have put their names to a letter to BBC bosses calling on the corporation to “stop censorship on Palestine.”
The letter comes after the BBC removed from iPlayer the doc after it emerged that it was narrated by the son of a Hamas minister, information that the BBC said the doc’s producers failed to relay. The letter, which was also signed by actors Khalid Abdalla, India Amarteifio, Miriam Margolyes, Ruth Negga, and Juliet Stevenson, did not deny the narrator’s links to Hamas but said his father, Dr Ayman Al-Yazouri, served as Gaza’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, a “civil service role concerned with food production.

Update: In the wake of the BBC acknowledging “serious flaws” in the production of its controversial documentary “Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone” and initiating a further review, Artists for Palestine UK, which had published a letter condemning the broadcaster’s decision to remove the film, have issued a statement.
Artists for Palestine UK said: “We are appalled that the BBC has chosen to give credence to a politicized campaign that sought to discredit a documentary about children’s experiences of unspeakable Israeli military violence, because one child’s father was deputy agriculture minister in Gaza. This disgraceful decision comes despite nearly 900 media figures having warned the BBC of the dangers of such an approach.
“Reports over the last week have detailed Israel’s detention and torture of hundreds of Gaza’s medical workers. The world has seen images of traumatized and emaciated Palestinian captives emerging from Israeli jails, some with limbs amputated.

Miriam Margolyes, Marvel, Role Rejection, Greed, Decision(Photo Credit – YouTube)
Miriam Margolyes didn’t just pass on Marvel; she ensured they knew exactly why. The Harry Potter alum, best known as the cheerful Professor Sprout, revealed that she rejected a role in Agatha after a blunt financial standoff. When Marvel offered her $600,000, she countered with an eye-popping demand: “I want a million pounds ($1.2 million).” Their response? “You can have half a million.” Her final answer? “No, I don’t want to do it.”
It wasn’t just about the money. Margolyes admitted little interest in revisiting the world of witches, saying, “I thought, ‘Oh god, not witches again because I’ve done that with Harry Potter.” Plus, she wasn’t keen on spending months in the U.S., particularly in Georgia, where Agatha filmed. Ultimately, she chalked up the decision to her nature: “Really, it’s a story about my greed rather than anything else.

Exclusive: Aurora Perrineau (Prodigal Son) has been tapped for an undisclosed role in Angels in the Asylum, an upcoming indie drama marking the feature debut of writer-director Rob Sorrenti.
Perrineau joins an ensemble which also includes Katherine Waterston, Simon Pegg, Minnie Driver, Cush Jumbo, Rose Williams and Miriam Margolyes, as previously announced.
Inspired by a BBC Newsnight exposé, the film tells the untold story of 50 women who were forcibly confined in isolation at Surrey’s Long Grove Asylum. Beginning in 1907, these women — deemed typhoid carriers — were imprisoned in the former psychiatric hospital, their lives shaped by fear, stigma, and medical injustice. Pic explores their struggle for freedom and dignity in the face of a system that saw them as threats rather than individuals, shedding light on a dark chapter in medical history.
Heather Greenwood, Marie-Elena Dyche and Charlotte Carey are producing the pic, currently shooting in the UK, with Parkland Pictures handling sales.

The upcoming HBO remake of the Harry Potter series could settle a long-running issue surrounding the original books and movies, but this approach may be too risky. Warmer Bros and HBO have advertised the new TV show as a book-faithful adaptation, but there are still limited details regarding how the series will be approached. The companies heard out a variety of pitches from writers, and Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod were ultimately chosen. Of course, the public doesn't yet know what sort of tone this duo chose for their new Harry Potter series, and there are a handful of possibilities.

The Nightmare Before Christmas doesn’t explain or give hints about Jack Skellington’s backstory, but his appearance in another movie might have revealed he was a pirate. Directed by Henry Selick with a story by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas was released in 1993 and introduced the audience to Jack Skellington, a skeleton who lives in Halloweentown and serves as its Pumpkin King, leading the yearly Halloween celebrations. Tired of doing the same things every year, Jack wanders through the forest and comes across the doors to other Holidays, and becoming fascinated by Christmas Town, he decides to bring Christmas to Halloweentown.
Thanks to his unique design and story, Jack Skellington has become part of pop culture and one of the most beloved animated characters – it’s no surprise, then, that Jack has appeared in other movies by Selick, from Tim Burton’s universe, and outside these worlds. One cameo appearance,...

BBC radio news presenter Nick Robinson isn’t the first, just the latest broadcaster to have to apologise after getting one partcular UK senior politician’s name wrong, and very rude, live on air.
The Sun newspaper reports that Robinson made the boo-boo Friday morning during the BBC’s flagship current affairs radio show The Today Programme.
Referencing the shadow chancellor Jeremy Hunt, Robinson said:
“When the Tories announced £12 billion in welfare cuts, and at the time the Labour Party ondemned that, they said that Rishi Sunak and Jeremy C**t had no idea where they’d get ‘the money, you’re going to do exactly the same aren’t you in this Budget?”
A few minutes later, the presenter spoke up to say:
“The eagle-eared amongst you have just pointed out that I repeated what was known as the (former presenter) Jim Naughtie error up until my last interview...

When we think of the most handsome celebs in Hollywood, one name that always pops up is Leonardo DiCaprio. The 49-year-old has been the heartthrob of ladies since his Titanic and Romeo + Juliet days, but there’s more to the star than his good looks.
Leonardo DiCaprio in Shutter Island| Paramount Pictures
Early in his career, DiCaprio sweated away hours on movie sets to bring the best out of his roles. However, sometimes he forgot to wash off that sweat, which caused problems for his co-stars, like Harry Potter actress Miriam Margolyes.

Doctor Who season 15 has now added an Emmy winner to face off against Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor. Gatwa's era of the long-running BBC sci-fi series kicked off with 2023's seasonal special "The Church on Ruby Road," where he first joined forces with Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday. The Doctor and Ruby's adventures took them to deep-space warzones, alternate timelines, the Beatlemania of the 1960s, and Regency-era England before life would lead to them parting ways with one another after an emotional Doctor Who season 14 finale.
While season 15 wrapped filming in May, Deadline has reported that The Good Wife star Archie Panjabi will appear in the series when it returns to Disney Plus and BBC One in 2025. It is unknown who Panjabi will play and how many episodes she will appear since the BBC keeps details under tight wraps. However, it is confirmed the role is a villainous character.

Earlier seasons of Blackadder were already popular. The scriptwriting was filled with pathos as well as humor. The last episode almost was a disaster, but saved by post-production.
British comedies have come to be known for their high standard of humor, while also filtering in pathos that can turn any comedic moment into a poignant one. Blackadder is perhaps one of the most striking examples that took audiences by surprise with a breathtaking ending. Rowan Atkinson's portrayal of the titular character isn't far short of being a defining moment in his career, albeit, Edmund Blackadder had a swift personality change after season 1 wasn't quite the success the creators had hoped for. Prior to becoming the dry, sarcastic lead that fans came to love, Blackadder was a bumbling fool who didn't get viewers on side. Baldrick had his wits about him, and it was down to him to provide guidance as a servant.
