Cody Lightning's 'Hey Viktor!' Meta Filmmaking Indie Comedy Trailer
Image
"I keep risking everything, and I end up with nothing..." Monument Releasing has debuted a new trailer for the film Hey Viktor!, a meta comedy about filmmaking made by Cody Lightning. This premiered a few years ago at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, and already opened up in Canada last year, finally getting a US release this year. This is kinda like a Kevin Smith movie but made by Natives. 25 long years after his time in the limelight, former child actor Cody Lightning tries to revive his life with a self-produced sequel to Smoke Signals (1998). Cody Lightning played Little Viktor in 1998's Sundance hit Smoke Signals, and this is a comedy about him also trying to figure out what his life means after that. He's forced to move home to his reserve in northern Alberta. When he learns his wife and kids are leaving him for a younger, more successful actor,...

Banff: Taye Diggs, Jennifer Whalen to Lead ‘New Spanish’ Live Script Read (Exclusive)
Image
The first-ever Hot Pilot Party at the Banff World Media Festival will see Taye Diggs, Jennifer Whalen, Dani Kind, Praneet Akilla and Cody Lightning do a live staged reading of Andrew De Angelis’ half hour comedy New Spanish.

The table read will see Banff organizers team up with Hot Pilot Party creators Nadine Bhabha, Julian De Zotti, and Hannah Antaki to bring the event to the Canadian Rockies on June 8.

New Spanish, which was chosen from among 400 script submissions to the Hot Pilot Party, has a politically-charged plot in a post-Trump era where a small town Ontario is looking to secede from Canada. The live script read in Banff keeps pace with the festival’s traditional market role of helping hothouse TV series in development, rather than see the selling of finished product as at the two MIPs in Cannes.

“Banff is packed with world-class programming, so to have a...

Ed Helms Joins Indigenous Hockey Film Smudge the Blades
Cody Lightning
Filming has begun in Edmonton on Smudge the Blades, a sports dramedy from writer-director Cody Lightning. The feature centers on the Treaty 6 Blades, an under-18 Indigenous hockey team facing their last season in a rough northern Alberta league.

New additions to the cast include Ed Helms (The Hangover), Paulina Alexis (Reservation Dogs), and Jana Schmieding (Rutherford Falls). Lightning stars as Willie Gladue, a Zamboni driver who finds himself behind the bench as the team’s unexpected coach. Schmieding plays a hockey mom who becomes his love interest.

Lightning, who also co-wrote the script with Samuel Miller, described the significance of the setting and subject matter. “Rez hockey in Canada is bigger than high school football in Texas,” he said. “I’m so honored to have this incredible cast to bring to life the experiences of Indigenous hockey players, on and off the ice.”

A trio of performers have joined the cast of sports feature Smudge the Blades from writer-director Cody Lightning.

Ed Helms (The Hangover), Paulina Alexis (Reservation Dogs) and Jana Schmieding (Rutherford Falls) star alongside Lightning. Production recently began in Edmonton, Canada, with the film aiming to hit the 2026 festival circuit.

Smudge the Blades centers on the Treaty 6 Blades, an under-18 reservation hockey team hoping to make the most of the members’ final year of eligibility amid their violent league in northern Alberta. Samuel Miller co-wrote the script with Lightning.

“Rez hockey in Canada is bigger than high school football in Texas,” says Lightning, known for his role on Marvel’s Echo. “I’m so honored to have this incredible cast to bring to life the experiences of Indigenous hockey players, on and off the ice.”

The film underwent a wide casting effort for the young Indigenous hockey players. Landing key roles...

Image
FX is heading back to Oklahoma. The network has picked up a drama pilot from creator Sterlin Harjo (“Reservation Dogs”) and star Ethan Hawke to series, Variety first reported and Gold Derby can confirm.

The series’ plot details are being kept under wraps, but it’s described as “a Tulsa noir about a guy (Hawke) who knows too much.” It’s a reunion of sorts for Harjo and Hawke, as the latter guest-starred in the second-to-last episode of Harjo’s FX comedy series “Reservation Dogs.” Harjo created the new series and directed the pilot and will serve as executive producer. Hawke will also serve as executive producer. Garrett Basch (“Reservation Dogs”) is also an EP.

The pilot, which was ordered in February with the working title “The Sensitive Kind,” filmed in Oklahoma in April and May. The pilot’s cast includes Keith David, Siena East, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tim Blake Nelson,...

FX declined to comment.

The pickup comes on the heels of Reservation Dogs‘ final season scoring a best comedy series nomination at September’s Emmy Awards, one of four nods for the show this year. FX ordered a pilot for the new show in February; along with Hawke, the cast includes Keith David, Siena East, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tim Blake Nelson, Scott Shepherd, Tracy Letts, Kyle MacLachlan, Macon Blair, Killer Mike, Kaniehtiio Horne...

10 Best Fantasy TV Shows Of 2024
Image
2024 has been a stellar year for fantasy, with the blending of genres and exciting new voices being highlighted both on and off the camera. The live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender isn't quite as strong as the animated show, but captures audience attention. Dead Boy Detectives successfully expands the world of the Sandman universe.

Fantasy television contains some of the most imaginative storytelling in visual media, and the best fantasy TV shows of 2024 all exemplify this ability. Of course, there's overlap between fantasy shows and the other great genre TV that's been put out in recent years. However, fantasy distinguishes itself with its magic, otherworldly settings, and plots that bend the forces of nature and reality. Not to mention, there were fantastic performances achieved by actors in the past year. Transforming into characters who inhabit another world and translating complex interpersonal dynamics demonstrates the strength of a show.

Translating the visual...

Disney+ Viewership Numbers Show Surprising Top Marvel Show of the Year So Far
Image
Echo on Disney+ is a hit, Marvel's crown jewel in 2024 despite mixed reviews, paving the way for new storylines and characters. Marvel Studios adapting to post-Endgame changes with less production, driving mature storytelling in Echo, promising a change in direction. Echo could see second season potential, setting stage for new adventures, as actress Alaqua Cox hopes for more family drama and big villains.

Marvel's Echo, the Hawkeye spin-off released earlier this year, has been crowned as one of the most watched Marvel series on Disney+ so far in 2024. Despite having had a mixed reception among fans, the Alaqua Cox-led series proved to be the jewel in Marvel's slightly tainted crown on the platform.

Marvel Studios has gone through a rough few years since the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, something that even Marvel boss Kevin Feige admitted recently. The end of the Infinity Saga marked the end of a huge journey,...

Echo Is Disney+'s Second Biggest TV Series In 2024...But It's Still A Long Way From First Place
Image
Variety has shared a piece on 2024's streaming titles, confirming Echo is the second most-viewed series on Disney+ this year so far. It's an impressive achievement, particularly as Marvel Studios dropped all five episodes at once, leading to the show being quickly forgotten.

We've seen in recent years that weekly drops are much better for keeping people talking about new titles (which goes against Netflix's once highly successful streaming model of releasing every episode at once).

Rumour has it Echo suffered from quite a few issues behind the scenes, with six instalments becoming five, as a result. That could explain why they hit Disney+ on the same day, though reviews were somewhat positive as is evident from the show's 71% Rotten Tomatoes score.

However, putting this news into context is the fact, "[Percy Jackson and the Olympians] accounts for nearly a quarter of Disney+ original series viewing time so far...

How ‘Echo’ Director Sydney Freeland Turned the “Pressure Cooker” of Marvel Into a Historic Series
Image
Around halfway through the fifth episode of Marvel’s Echo, viewers are dropped into the experience of a Choctaw Nation powwow. It’s a first-of-its-kind moment for the MCU, featuring dancers in regalia singing to the drum-driven music. In a poorly lit nearby barn stands Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez, in a face-off alongside the women of her family against a notorious New York crime kingpin, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio).

Director Sydney Freeland pitched the moment to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige by recalling how she grew up reading Marvel Comics and attending powwows.

“I’ve read comic books at powwows, for sure — I’ve probably fallen asleep reading comic books at powwows — but those two things never overlapped,” Freeland tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So to have those things come together, to have Kingpin at a powwow, it is a very surreal experience.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has wooed Oscar-winning...

Marvel's Echo: Choctaw Creation Myth & Real World Differences Explained
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Echo.

Marvel Studios collaborated with the Choctaw Nation and the IllumiNative organization to ensure an authentic depiction of Choctaw culture in Echo. The opening moments of Echo episode 1, "Chafa," explored the Choctaw Nation's creation myth and stayed true to real-world mythology while adding some of the McU's typical supernatural elements. Maya Lopez's powers as Echo in the MCU connect her directly to her Native American ancestry, giving new meaning to her superhero moniker.

Marvel Studios' Echo detailed the events of the Choctaw Nation's real-world creation myth, though there are several differences between the ancient story and its interpretation in the MCU. Following her debut as Maya Lopez in Phase 4's Hawkeye series, Alaqua Cox reprised the role in Echo, which released in its entirety on Disney+ on January 9, 2024. Echo explored more of Maya's background and Native American heritage, and to ensure Echo's depiction of Choctaw culture,...

10 MCU Villain Returns That Made Them Way Better
Image
Bringing back beloved MCU villains can lead to stronger and more compelling storylines. Characters like Kingpin and Thanos evolved and became more prominent in subsequent appearances. Returning villains, such as Hela and Green Goblin, allowed for deeper exploration of their motivations and character development.

Numerous villains from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have made surprise returns in subsequent installments, which are arguably stronger than their original appearances. It's easy to consider the villains in the MCU as somewhat disposable, often defeated by their respective heroes in the final confrontation. However, several MCU villains have been so popular that they have been brought back, often with far more effective results.

The MCU timeline has featured a litany of fantastic villains, but certain foes have returned, even more than once. This phenomenon might prove useful as the MCU navigates Jonathan Majors' departure from the franchise, and Marvel reconsiders the trajectory of the McU's future.

Echo Draws Huge Viewership With Streaming Debut on Disney+ and Hulu
Image
Echo is a big hit on streaming, drawing big numbers at both Disney+ and Hulu upon its debut.

On Tuesday, all five episodes of Echo were dropped simultaneously on both Disney+ and Hulu. While exact viewership numbers haven't yet been revealed, Deadline reported that Echo debuted in the No. 1 spot on both of its streaming platforms. The release came with a notable change compared to the previous McU-set shows, as it's the first time all episodes of the seasons were released at once, allowing fans the opportunity to binge-watch Echo from start to finish. It was also the first time a Marvel show was released on both Disney+ and Hulu. It would seem that adding a second streaming home for the series only meant dominating an additional platform in addition to Disney+.

The Most Valuable Asset Marvel's Echo Borrows From Fast And Furious
Image
The following contains spoilers for "Echo."

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is vast, which can make it difficult for various stories to stand apart or make their mark. The MCU shows on Disney+ have even more working against them, as there's so much TV out there that divesting people's attention can be difficult. For the latest entry in the MCU, "Echo," the series drew its greatest strength not from other comic books or even superhero cinema, but from another major franchise: "The Fast and the Furious."

While it may not be intentional, "Echo" mirrors "Fast and Furious" in the way Maya (Alaqua Cox) is aided by her extended family, including her estranged grandmother Chula (Tantoo Cardinal), her cousins Biscuits (Cody Lightning) and Bonnie (Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs), her uncle Henry (Chaske Spencer), and her sorta-grandfather Skully (Graham Greene). Each character offers something very different to Maya, much like the way the...

Marvel's Echo Ending Explained: Echoes Of The Past Kick Off Marvel's Future
Image
The following contains spoilers for Marvel's "Echo."

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has made interesting detours in its television output, with several shows on Disney+ that serve as side-stories to the greater overarching MCU "phases." Now they've started releasing stories under the "Marvel Spotlight" banner, which allows for much more adult content than the family-friendly MCU fare people have grown accustomed to, and the first mini-series under the banner is "Echo." "Echo" follows the story of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), an Indigenous woman who was taken in by Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) after the death of her father. In the comics, she eventually becomes a superhero through a very long, painful journey that sees her go from one of Kingpin's goons to helping out the New Avengers, even teaming up with Moon Knight and Daredevil along the way. Created by Joe Quesada and David Mack, she's...

Marvel's Echo Brings Forth A Set Piece We've Never Seen On Screen
Image
Marvel's "Echo" is breaking a lot of barriers by simply existing. To begin with, it's the debut of the Marvel Spotlight banner, which aims to deliver more grounded, character-driven stories that are set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe but don't necessarily require an extensive amount of homework to understand. But more importantly, it's the first time that a Choctaw woman and the people of the Choctaw Nation at large have taken the spotlight in a major Hollywood production. On top of that, "Echo" star Alaqua Cox was born deaf and actually lives life as amputee with a prosthetic leg, just like the character she's portraying.

All of this makes Marvel's "Echo" quite a milestone in representation. In order to capture this underrepresented communities accurately, director and Navajo filmmaker Sydney Freeland made sure to bring in creatives who also represented these communities. As the filmmaker explained to ABC 7 Chicago, "The...

Marvel Studios’ Echo TV Review
Image
Plot: Marvel Studios presents Echo, spotlighting Maya Lopez as she is pursued by Wilson Fisk’s criminal empire. When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and legacy.

Review: As Marvel Studios continues trying to reinvent their franchise after a lackluster year at the box office and on Disney+, Kevin Feige and his team kick-off 2024 early with many firsts. Echo is the first MCU series to debut simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu, the first to drop the full season on the same day, the first spin-off of another Disney+ series, the first project under the new Marvel Spotlight banner, the first series featuring an indigenous actress in the lead role (not to mention the first Deaf lead and first lead with a prosthetic limb), and the first MCU series with a TV-ma rating. Marvel's Echo Review: An Action-Packed Showcase For Alaqua Cox And The Choctaw Nation
Image
Potential spoilers follow.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has lost its magic. Gone is the urgency of seeing a new Marvel Studios movie in theaters. The endless roster of TV shows on Disney+ have made audiences feel overwhelmed with storylines connected to the bigger comic book picture that defined The Infinity Saga. So the odds are undoubtedly stacked against Marvel's "Echo," a new series that basically amounts to a spin-off of a spin-off.

"Echo" focuses on secondary "Hawkeye" villain Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), a deaf amputee of the Choctaw Nation who is fresh off turning against her adoptive father, the Kingpin himself, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), at the end of Jeremy Renner's Disney+ series. After learning Kingpin was responsible for her father's death and used the tragedy to mold her into his own deadly weapon on the streets, Maya shot Kingpin in the face, leaving her to figure out what...

Echo Review: McU's First 2024 Show Feels Like A Grand Return To Marvel TV's Netflix Era
Image
Echo is a strong outing for Marvel Studios and one of its most unique and compelling Marvel shows. The show focuses on street-level fighting between Maya and Kingpin, giving it a more character-driven feel. Echo features Marvel's first deaf and Indigenous superhero, with representation and unique storytelling as key strengths.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Five has been one of the studio's most uneven phases thus far, with extremely low lows and only middling highs, but Echo is by far one of the franchise's strongest outings post-Avengers: Endgame. Ostensibly a spinoff to Hawkeye, Echo follows the deaf Choctaw character of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), who was introduced as a member of Kingpin's (Vincent D'Onofrio) organization. However, Maya learned that Kingpin was behind her father's murder — at the hands of Hawkeye while he was operating as Ronin — and turned on him. Though the new show picks up after Hawkeye, Echo...

‘Echo’ Review: Disney+’s Latest Marvel Series Is Fresh, if Not Exciting
Image
Echo, Marvel and Disney’s new five-part limited series, is a groundbreaking piece of television.

This isn’t the same — at least not necessarily — as being a great piece of television, but let’s start by giving credit where credit is due.

Doing an ostensible superhero show — it isn’t always clear that’s what Echo is — in which your protagonist is an Indigenous, deaf amputee will always be steering your vehicle off the paved roads and into uncharted territory. Doing it in a way that respects and honors all three of those outsider experiences without making it feel like you’re working your way down a representational checklist is an audacious and worthwhile thing.

In that respect, Echo is a triumph. It’s a series of moments that alternately had me thinking, “Huh, that feels different and right” and “Huh, I can’t believe somebody was able to do that in a Marvel show.

Echo Director Explains Significance of Daredevil Fight Sequence
Image
Echo director Sydney Freeland revealed how they used the fight sequence between Maya Lopez and Daredevil to portray the titular character’s transformation.

A week ago, a brief preview of Echo and Daredevil’s intense fight scene surfaced online, which garnered mixed reactions from fans. Speaking with Games Radar, Freeland opened up about the significance of the six-minute-long sequence, revealing that she decided to shoot the scene in one-take in hopes of showcasing Maya’s transformation as Kingpin’s successor. "It's interesting. There's a fight sequence in the first episode," she said. "When I read the script, what was great about this scene is that Maya Lopez comes into the scene as a teenage girl, and she leaves the scene as a cold-blooded killer. Conceptually, we shot that as a oner because I wanted the audience to be able to see that transformation take place in real time."

‘Echo’ and ‘What If’ Star Devery Jacobs Addresses Viral Clip That Asked if Both Maya and Kahhori Need to Exist: “That’s Egregious”
Image
Marvel fans are gearing up for the release of the latest entry in the comic book franchise with Echo, which features a Native American lead for the first time in a live-action MCU project. But just weeks before the show debuted, Marvel also introduced another Native character to its lineup, that of Kahhori in the animated series What If …?

Praise from fans and critics alike was extremely strong for Kahhori, who is an original character for What If …?, with many calling the character’s episode one of the best of the series. But there were also some viral comments that questioned if Echo was really needed after Kahhori’s breakout moment, as having two Native American characters would be “repetitive,” despite the fact that the two don’t have similar backgrounds and are among the very few diverse characters in the MCU.

Devery Jacobs, the Native American star of Reservation Dogs...
