In 1987 (after his career had nosedived), his son Andrew boarded a Jersey ferry bound for the mainland in London. When the ferry docked, he was not on board. He is presumed to have either drowned accidentally or to have committed suicide.

A Canadian of Scots parentage (his father was a clergyman), he began his film career in Britain, but went to America at the end of the 1930s and made American films and had star roles on Broadway until the start of the 1950s. His identification with a number of liberal and left-wing causes made him unpopular with the House Un-American Activities Committee and he deemed it prudent to return to Britain, where he had a busy and long-lasting career.

He played Henry L. Stimson, America's Secretary of War during World War II, in three different television productions.
