Theater Review: Steppenwolf’s ‘Noises Off’ is Wild & Crazy Fun
Chicago – If you’ve never seen the farcical ensemble theater chestnut “Noises Off,” you will see no better version than on the Steppenwolf Theatre stage, now at their northside Chicago venue through November 3rd. For tickets and details for this riotous theater experience, click Noises Off.

Play Rating: 4.5/5.0

The story opens on the final dress rehearsal for a touring company of “Nothing On,” a supposed comedy about couples and misunderstandings in a country house. The actors in the play are horribly unprepared, much to the chagrin of director Lloyd (Rick Holmes), who is beside himself despite the best efforts of his assistant Poppy (Vaneh Assadourian) and Stage Manager Tim (Max Stewart). The actors include Dotty (Ora Jones), portraying centerpiece housekeeper Mrs. Clackett, Garry playing Roger (Andrew Leeds), Brooke portraying Vicki (Amanda Fink), Freddie playing Philip (James Vincent Meredith), Belinda portraying Flavia (Audrey Francis), and Selsdon playing The Burglar (Francis Guinan...

‘Emperor of Ocean Park’ Review: Forest Whitaker’s MGM+ Thriller Sags Under the Weight of Messy Ambition
Image
When law professor Tal (Grantham Coleman) enters his childhood home ahead of his father’s funeral, his young son Bentley (Dyllan Yelverton) turns to him with curiosity. “Is Grandpa going to be a ghost?” he asks. No, Tal responds. “So he won’t haunt us?” Tal patiently replies that he doesn’t think so.

As it turns out, Tal will be right on the first count and wrong on the second. MGM+’s Emperor of Ocean Park is not the sort of story in which spirits return to wreak supernatural havoc. It is, however, entirely about the ways in which Tal and his siblings are haunted by the memory of their dad, conservative judge Oliver Garland (Forest Whitaker), in ways that lend themselves to both Grishamesque thrills and Succession-lite angst. But even Whitaker’s innate gravitas can only do so much to fight gravity. Eventually, the drama sags under the weight of its messy ambition.

We Grown Now Review | A Beautifully Poetic Journey to Adulthood
Image
Childhood dreams shine brightly despite the darkness of the Cabrini-Green housing projects in We Grown Now. Minhal Baig beautifully showcases the poetry of childhood despite racial and economic realities in Chicago. The film can feel a little preachy and melodramatic, but it's nonetheless an honest and deeply poignant portrayal of young boys navigating tumultuous times.

A pair of inquisitive Black boys struggle with life's inevitable changes in 1992 Chicago's impoverished and crime-ridden Cabrini-Green housing projects in We Grown Now. The film tugs at heartstrings as a poetic and beautifully told coming-of-age story unfolds. Acclaimed filmmaker Minhal Baig uses symbolic fantasy elements to depict an upbringing rarely portrayed with such honesty. Children are much more than a product of their physical environment. They are shaped by multiple factors that open young minds to adult hardships. The loss of innocence can be devastating, but a strong foundation ensures the fortitude to cope and carry on with maturity.

From John Wells and Sherman Payne, Emperor of Ocean Park is set in the worlds of politics, Ivy League academia and the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard. The nature of the judge’s death is questioned by Tal’s sister, Mariah (Tiffany Mack), a former journalist and inveterate conspiracy theorist, who believes that the judge, a failed Black nominee to the Supreme Court, met with foul play.
