As cliches go former residents returning to their hometowns and reuniting with their school and neighbourhood friends entails a degree of success, fame and fortune in the interim. None of those is the case here. Kenzo does not have a job, money or velocity. Reality has beaten those out of him. Things were different when he was young and hopeful.

Kadowakis' house has a fig tree in the yard. Mr Kadowaki is a construction worker who finds a job in Tokyo. Mrs Kadowaki is a housewife. He keels over and dies one day necessitating the woman to move in with their daughter and finding a job. She starts a relationship with her employer and they move back to her old house as a couple. The tree is still there yet the cast of characters are undergoing even more turbulence.
