Rico Amonte was brought out to LA by his older brother Angelo, a detective in the LAPD Robbery/Homicide Division.

Amonte gets two days off work after a long week, and starts it by punching a guy. He blames his bad luck on the black cats that crossed his path earlier. Gabriela has an itch that needs scratching, and Chase shows his mettle.

Amonte and Barnes respond to a complaint of child abuse at the hospital. Valero and Williams pull over a vehicle after they observe what looks like a kidnap, only to find the "victim" carrying a large gun. A vehicle pulled over for a broken tail-light becomes a homicide investigation when a body is found.

A white supremacist brings down a reign of terror. Rico falls in love. Jablonski teaches Lopez to speak Spanish.

Deputy Rico Amonte (Danny Nucci) is a rookie in Los Angeles Sheriffs Department. He has a bad encounter with Senior Deputy John Henry Barnes (Ernie Hudson). To his shock, Barnes becomes his training officer.

Rico has problems in love. A little girl goes missing. The policemen's charity ball approaches. Jablonski and Layne ride together. A man takes a gun into a school classroom.

Amonte fails to take out an armed attacker in the prescribed manner and has to explain to Barnes and Briggs at a time when he is up for evaluation. A slum landlord asks for help with an eviction and Rico overreacts to what he sees. Williams is teamed with Layne. Barnes lets Rico drive the squad car for the first time - which he soon regrets.

Rico's father comes to visit from New York.

Rico finds an abandoned baby. Lopez runs into her former gang girlfriends.

Barnes has a turn and is put on temporary desk duty. Amonte is teamed up with a new Senior Deputy. A drive-by shooting has the deputies investigating the local porn industry.

Rico witnesses a shooting in his local video store. After he identifies the shooter, a gangster hit is put out on him. Lopez tickets a boyfriend who hadn't called. Layne and Williams deal with some repo guys.

Gang warfare breaks out in a cemetery. Layne feels her biological clock ticking. Barnes's daughter misses a test at school. A woman reports a stalker from a speed-date. The charity ball comes around.

Chase is visited by his ex-girlfriend. Bank robbers cause problems for the team. Rico makes a friend.

Amonte is accused of using excessive force. A neighborhood turns nasty when an elderly man makes a complaint about a noisy party next door. Barnes is shot by an old friend.

A home invasion is blamed on cops. Lopez and Jablonski chase a bag snatcher. Layne & Williams respond to a complaint of bad smells, and find an apartment filled with preserved body parts.

Valero returns, filling in for Layne. Amante and Barnes attend a murder staged to look like suicide. Jablonski's attitude gets him in trouble. Rico gets an invitation to join the station boxing team, and witnesses a birth. A grandmother asks for help with her wayward grandson. A man takes a gun into the station.
