      1911Curta
Frank Richardson is writing a play, his first play. Imbued with a feeling that his work is one of more than ordinary value and that great success awaits him when it is finished, he labors day and night, sometimes without eating or sleeping. His finances, however, have run low and he is one day awakened to the necessity of his earning at least enough to pay for his room and aboard. But the play is nearly finished and until he is turned out of his room and his typewriter taken from him, does he realize his position. He finishes the play on a park bench and with great confidence of its success, visits a theatrical manager. Here his reception is cold and he is turned down by the manager, who refuses to even look at the manuscript. He tries another one and in despair is again turned down. Undaunted, he returns to the first manager, but unable to see him, leaves the manuscript with a clerk, who, after the young man has departed, throws the manuscript into a waste basket. The manager, entering at the moment rescues the manuscript and glances through it. His interest is immediately aroused as, delighted, he realizes he has made a find. The young playwright, in the meantime, has fallen in a faint on the street and is rescued by a young lady and her mother, who give him a room in their house. The daughter and the playwright fall in love and a few days later they read a personal in the paper, advertising for Frank Richardson, author of "The Golden Age," whose play is to be produced. In delight, Richardson visits the office of the theatrical manager, who presents Richardson with a good sized check, advanced royalties on his play.

Going to his friend, George Randall, Clayton shows him Barnes' letter asking that George be brought along, as he has always been like a son to him and that someone will be glad to see him. George agrees to go and that night has a dream of the old days on the Barnes farm, where he worked as a young fellow and loved Barnes' pretty daughter, Mollie. Toiling on the old-fashioned place becomes irksome to him and he determines to seek his fortune in the city. Packing up his few things, he leaves a note for Barnes, then steals away in the moonlight and comes upon Mollie in the garden. Telling her of his discontent and his plans for the future he kisses her tenderly, receives her blessing and leaves. With a start George awakes to find Clayton urging him to hurry and make the train. But what a change greets their eyes on arriving at the old place. Time and money have worked wonders, sure enough, and the Barnes' farm is now equipped with the latest and most modern machinery and conveniences. With pretty Mollie by his side George rides over the vast acres in wonderment, and the two plan a moonlight elopement that night. Proudly old Barnes shows them a new auto wagon he has just purchased and tells George it is good for anything. Next morning the young couple are missed and Barnes finds a note from George, declaring the auto wagon has been just the right medium for their elopement and that the farm and Mollie are good enough for him, for they are coming back soon. So with a smile the old man prepares to kill the fatted calf.

    • 14. The Indian Trailer

      1909Curta
The first scene opens on the property of a well-known Western ranchman. A bunch of cow punchers are assembled wasting their time and their employer's money by playing cards. The ranchman catches them at the game, quickly breaks it up, and sends them to work. One cow puncher, a greaser, who dislikes being ordered about, even by his employer, tells the ranchman so. A fight ensues in which the ranchman gets the better of the greaser, and kicks him off the place. After this, the greaser swears revenge. He hits upon a plan, and with the assistance of another greaser they secure the ranchman's little girl, taking with them a shepherd dog, a playmate of the little girl, the dog being utilized later on by the greasers, as the story will show. Eventually the two greasers, the little girl and the dog arrive at the greasers' hut, and a note is written to the little girl's father, stating that she has been taken out of revenge for the treatment the greaser received at the hands of the ranchman and that they will not return her until they feel inclined to do so. The note is tied to the dog, the greaser well knowing that once the dog is released he will make his way back home and that the note will eventually fall into the hands of the little girl's father. The dog is turned loose and hurriedly makes his way home. Immediately upon the finding of the note by the rancher he gathers about him his cow punchers and they start on the trail of the greasers. In order to make sure of locating the girl, the father secures an Indian, who is noted for his ability as a "trailer." The Indian is not long in finding the tracks of the fugitives, and he eventually leads the father to the house where his child and her captors are in hiding. A thrilling chase now ensues, and after many startling occurrences the child is returned to her father and the greaser meets a just punishment at the hands of the Indian trailer.

Believing that she can get Parker to consent if she is persuasive enough, Helen has her fiancé, Henry Tracey, invite the theatrical manager to the party to be given by John W. Cannell so that she may work upon him. At the affair Helen manages to obtain Parker's consent to give her a trial it she is successful in having Jack Craigen, a friend of Cannell, who has been living in Patagonia for a long time and who is a woman hater, propose to her. Helen works her wiles upon the adamant Craigen and finally elicits a proposal from him. The guests in the next room, who have been listening, come out at the critical moment, and congratulate her. Craigen demands an explanation, and he is told that it is all a joke. He refuses to accept the incident in such a light, however, and makes preparations to leave for his home in the mountains. At this juncture. Tracey, who had been called out of town on important business before the commencement of the party, returns. When told of Helen's episode with Craigen he becomes very angry and upbraids her. Tracey then goes in search of Craigen, whom he does not know, and mistaking Keen Fitzpatrick, a reporter, who has been waiting in the next room for an interview with Craigen on Patagonia, for the man he is in search of, he starts to pour a scathing indictment upon him. The guests hear the tirade and inform Tracey of the identity of the man to whom he is speaking. Meanwhile Craigen, having packed his belongings, is leaving in his auto. As he is passing the back entrance, Helen jumps in front of his auto and tells him that, inasmuch as he does not know anything about women he should adopt the Patagonian savage method and carry her off to his home where he could study her. He puts her suggestion into effect and Helen is carried off in the auto to his home in the woods, where he brutally orders her about. She attempts to escape, and Craigen chains her to the floor. While he leaves her for a moment to put his car into the garage, "Boney," an escaped lunatic, makes his way into the cabin. He styles himself Napoleon Bonaparte, and raves about his armies. As he is swinging his sword about the room, Craigen appears, and by diplomacy succeeds in getting "Boney" upstairs to review his armies where he is locked in a room. Craigen returns to Helen. His back is turned to her and she knocks him unconscious with the telephone. Taking the keys from his pocket, she releases herself and escapes into the woods. Craigen recovers his senses and, finding the note Helen left informing him that she feels sorry for her action and has gone for help, fears for her safety, and goes out in search of her. During his absence Fitzpatrick, who was trailing, arrives. On searching through the house for Craigen, he comes upon "Boney," whom he takes to be the man he is searching for. He demands to know where the girl is, but "Boney" only raves about his armies. The two are just on the point of clashing when Craigen returns. He reveals his identity to the reporter, and tells him that Helen has fled into the woods. The asylum keepers trace "Boney" to Craigen's home, and take him away. Tracey, who has also been following, arrives at the cabin and confronts Craigen with a revolver. He demands Helen or his life. Craigen manages to convince Tracey, after an argument, that Helen has fled into the woods. Helen has seen Tracey's car going in the direction of Craigen's home, and fearing trouble, makes her way back. She arrives just after Tracey has left. The other members of the house party arrive to take Helen back, but she refuses to leave Craigen.
