Duffer Brothers Officially Move to Paramount With Exclusive Four-Year Deal
Image
The new Paramount has officially made its first big talent deal: Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer are moving to the studio.

Paramount and parent company Skydance made the announcement Monday, five days after reports that the brothers were in talks to leave Netflix, where they created the megahit Stranger Things. The Duffers’ deal at Paramount is an exclusive, four-year pact that covers film, TV and streaming projects, with an emphasis on the brothers “fulfill[ing] an ambition to write, produce, and direct large-scale theatrical films.” They’ll move to Paramount following the conclusion of their current Netflix deal in April 2026.

Landing the Duffers is a coup for new CEO David Ellison and his team, who in taking over Paramount pledged to make the studio “the No. 1 destination for the most talented artists and filmmakers in the world.” (Paramount is also in talks with Legendary Pictures about a film output deal,...

Streaming Hits Another Record High in July, Nielsen Says
Lee Jung-jae in Squid Game (2021)
Streaming set another high for TV use in the United States in July — which is not exactly a new development.

July was the sixth consecutive month that streamers have taken a record-high share of viewing, with 47.3 percent of all TV use, according to Nielsen. That’s up from 46 percent in June and about six points higher than it was in July 2024 (41.4 percent).

The gains for streaming came largely at the expense of cable, which came in at 22.2 percent of TV use for the July reporting period (which ran from June 30-July 27). That was down from 23.4 percent a month earlier, due largely to double-digit declines in both news and sports coverage compared to June.

Broadcast networks were largely stable month to month, albeit at a record low in the four-year history of Nielsen’s Gauge rankings. They accounted for 18.4 percent of viewing, down a tick from 18.5 percent in June.

In fact,...

‘Dept. Q’ Renewed for Second Season at Netflix
Image
Netflix will return to the streets of Edinburgh and Dept. Q.

The streamer has ordered a second season of Dept. Q, its Scotland-set crime drama starring Matthew Goode and created by Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit). The renewal comes about 2 1/2 months after the series premiered to both solid reviews and audience numbers.

The series, based on novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, stars Goode as Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck, who leads a small team that works cases that were previously considered unsolvable from a basement office in Edinburgh. Alexej Manvelov, Leah Byrne and Jamie Sives also star.

“We are going downstairs to Dept. Q for a second season,” said executive producer Rob Bullock of Left Bank Pictures. “We at Left Bank Pictures nervously await what Scott has in store for his alter-ego Carl Morck, and the other enabling members of team do-lally. We salute Netflix’s courage to let them loose once again.

La Diplomate (2023)
‘The Diplomat’ Sets Season 3 Release Date as Latest Teaser Sees Keri Russell Warn of “Terribly Flawed” New Potus
La Diplomate (2023)
Netflix continues to tease out the third season of its hit political drama The Diplomat, offering yet another video preview of the next installment as well as sharing the release date: Oct. 16.

The new teaser for the upcoming episodes, though light on dialogue and extended scenes, features Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler saying, “a terribly flawed woman is now the president, and only we know just how flawed.”

The warning reminds viewers that the series’ former vice president, Grace Penn (Allison Janney), who was on the verge of being elevated to president in the closing moments of season two after President Rayburn (Michael McKean) died, is behind the British warship attack that launched the series, something Kate and husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) learned during season two, with Grace explaining her rationale to Kate in a tense exchange in the season finale.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about the end of...

MSNBC to Change Name to Ms Now Under Versant
Image
Now, MSNBC is Ms Now.

As MSNBC leaves NBCUniversal for Versant (fka SpinCo.), the cable news channel is rebranding to an acronym that stands for My Source for News, Opinion and the World. Right, so the Ms no longer stands for Microsoft, but it’s still there.

MSNBC was originally formed as a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC News; Microsoft divested its stake in the channel in 2005 and in MSNBC.com in 2012.

Find the “Why” behind “Ms Now” below via a Monday memo sent by Versant CEO Mark Lazarus to his staff. In it, Laz announces that USA Network’s sports content will merge with Golf Channel as “USA Sports” — the Versant spinoff is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Ms Now, like various other Versant properties, is deviating from the Peacock logo, which NBCU is keeping for itself. You’ll see new logos from CNBC, Golf Channel (aka USA Sports,...

The Art of the Emmy Submission: Which Stars and Series Chose Wisely (and Wrongly) to Win Gold
Image
The art of the Emmy submission has long been a strategic tightrope walk — part performance showcase, part calculated gamble. This year’s contenders are playing the game more thoughtfully, and creatively, than ever.

Apple TV+’s “Severance” and “The Studio” lead the pack in drama and comedy, with 27 and 23 nominations, respectively, while HBO Max made history with 142 total nominations — its highest tally yet. Still, while numbers and category domination make for splashy headlines, the real intrigue lies in how nominees carefully curate the episodes meant to win over Emmy voters.

Historically, episode submissions were everything. When Emmy panels were selected...

‘The Pitt’: Noah Wyle Begins Directing Season 2 Episode (Photo)
Image
When Noah Wyle stopped by TV Insider’s office during Season 1, he told us that he’d “very much like to” direct in Season 2. He’d previously directed episodes of Falling Skies, The Librarians, and Leverage: Redemption. In Season 1, he only added the titles of executive producer and writer to star. But that is changing for Season 2. On Tuesday, August 19, Wyle shared a photo of the clapperboard from set, revealing he’s directing Season 2 Episode 6. “Never want to wake up from this dream,” read the caption. Season 2 will pick up 10 months later, on Langdon’s (Patrick Ball) first day back at work following rehab. Wyle’s character Robby would have much rather not be working the same shift as the resident who betrayed him by stealing pills. “Robby can be petty, and forgiveness is sometimes harder for some than others. And yeah, betrayal is a big deal,” Wyle told us in August.

‘Big Brother’ Fans Have Big Complaint About Season 27’s Theme
Image
This summer was supposed to be a summer of mystery in the Big Brother house. The theme for Season 27 is Hotel Mystere, which was supposed to be “a place where secrets lurk behind every door, and nothing is as it seems.” However, some fans now think the theme’s significance to the season went away within the first few weeks. “What happened to Hotel Mystere?” a Reddit user asked. “Was anyone else confused about what happened to the whole Hotel Mystere theme this season?” “Pre-season, it was hyped up like we were getting a full-on murder mystery vibe. Rachel [Reilly] even entered the house through a secret passageway on night one, and then there was ‘the mastermind’ promising to wreak havoc all summer. ‘Outlander’: When Will Season 7B Stream on Netflix?
Image
Outlander fans may be gearing up for the beginning of the end as Season 8 looms on the 2026 horizon, but for viewers streaming from Netflix, rather than Starz, they’ve only just made a dent in Season 7 as the first eight installments became available on the platform as of August 11, 2025. So, when will the final eight installments of Outlander‘s super-sized seventh season land on Netflix? It’s a question that is a little tough to answer without an actual date, but we can make an educated estimate about the year it will likely drop. As fans may recall, Outlander Season 7 originally aired on Starz in the summer of 2023, and Season 7B began airing just over a year later in the fall of 2024. Meaning, Season 7B is likely to arrive behind Season 7A at around the same pace, with the final eight installments most likely dropping in 2026. This pattern also aligns...

MSNBC is forging a new path on the small screen. MSNBC is one of several channels that will live under the new company Versant, headed by Mark Lazarus, including CNBC, USA Network, E!, Oxygen, Syfy, Golf Channel, SportsEngine, and GolfNow. News of the name change comes seven months after Lazarus previously announced that MSNBC’s name would remain the same. “I know there was some discussion with the MSNBC name, so you can take that off of your worry list on things,” he told staffers during a January meeting, per Deadline. “The only thing I’ll say is the worst thing any leader can do is change something that’s working just because they can,” Lazarus added. “So, if this is working,...

Jillian Michaels Threatens to Sue Over ‘Biggest Loser’ Doc & Hits Back at Caffeine Pill Controversy

Jillian Michaels noticeably did not take part in Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser, a Netflix docuseries that pulled back the curtain on what went down on the weight loss show that aired from 2004 to 2020. Michaels served as a trainer on the series for 12 seasons and found herself embroiled in controversy when she was accused of illegally giving her clients caffeine pills during their weight loss journeys. The backlash the show received for this controversy and more was explored in the three-episode doc, and four days after its release, Michaels hit back. She told TMZ that she’s meeting with attorney Bryan Freedman to explore her options for how to retaliate. That could mean officially lawyering up and taking her complaints against Netflix, the docuseries producer, fellow trainer Bob Harper, and Dr. Robert Huizenga, who served as the medical advisor on the show, to court.
