'What our world needs right now is a bit of magic realism...', is the belief that sums up Samrat Chakraborty's vision and intent as a writer-director.
Born and schooled in the mining town of Dhanbad, Jharkhand, Samrat Chakraborty hailed from a lower middle-class Bengali family, where excelling in academics was the only gateway to escape the limitations of their limited existence. In an otherwise turbulent environment, 'stories' and books were his corner of peace.
During his college years (in BHU, Varanasi), Samrat discovered a passion for theatre, which allowed him to explore storytelling at a deeper level. This ignited his interest in the art of filmmaking, and he went on to get his degree in M.A. (Mass Communication) from MCRC, Jamia.
Drawn to the craft of directing, Samrat set out to find an Assistant Director's position, but a chance opportunity to write some 40 odd short stories for a radio show revealed his innate talent for writing, and also earned him accolades all over.
Samrat then ended up writing for numerous TV & Web series across all major platforms. His breakthrough came when he began co-writing 'Jagga Jasoos', helmed by renowned director, Anurag Basu, while also assisting Basu in direction. This prolific collaboration continued and earned Samrat a Filmfare nomination for 'Ludo' (wherein he was the Chief Assistant Director as well), and 'Metro In Dino' (currently in production). This on-ground training bolstered his command over the craft of cinema. His latest work (Screenplay & Dialogue) - Khaakee (Season 2) is due to stream on Netflix from March, 25.
Samrat's debut as a feature-film director (co-produced by Endemol India) happened with psychological thriller 'Manik' (due for release soon), starring Aishwarya Rajesh. His directorial style is characterized by his ability to seamlessly blend elements of fantasy and reality, creating a world that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. His meticulous attention to detail, coupled with his understanding of human emotions, allows him to bring characters to life with depth.
While Samrat's stories are deeply rooted in his small-town upbringing, they are universal in their thematic exploration. With his distinctive voice and an unique approach to storytelling, he aims to engage the audiences while leaving them thoughtful of their own relations and predicaments.
