NBC News is making a series of changes to its White House and Capitol Hill teams, as is typical with a new administration and shift in control in Congress.
Garrett Haake, who has covered Capitol Hill for four years and the past two years covering Donald Trump, is moving to the White House as senior correspondent. Yamiche Alcindor and Vaughn Hillyard will serve as White House correspondents. Hillyard also has covered Trump in the past two years; Alcindor covered Trump during his first term.
Peter Alexander will continue to serve as chief White House correspondent, joined by senior correspondents Kelly O’Donnell and Gabe Gutierrez. Monica Alba and Aaron Gilchrist also will remain White House correspondents.
On Capitol Hill, Ryan Nobles will become chief Capitol Hill correspondent. He joined NBC News in 2022 and has reported on Congress, including the removal of Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the congressional hearings into Hunter Biden.

Former Donald Trump adviser and White House Communications Director Hope Hicks will reportedly testify in the New York criminal hush money trial of her ex-employer.
According to MSNBC, Hicks has been tapped to testify in the trial, which is slated to begin April 15. Last March, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged the former president with 34 separate felony counts of falsifying business records. The case revolves around allegations that a 2016 hush-money payment made at Trump’s direction to adult film actress Stormy Daniels violated campaign finance laws.

Donald Trump’s campaign refused to agree to let an NBC News correspondent travel with him on New Hampshire campaign stops today as the designated pool reporter, leading to access being cut off for the day.
According to a pool report obtained by Deadline, correspondent Vaughn Hillyard was informed “that if he was the designated pooler by NBC News that the pool would be cut off for the day.”
“After affirming to the campaign that your pooler would attend the events, NBC News was informed at about 2:20pmET that the pool would not be allowed to travel with Trump today,” the pool report stated.
It’s believed by sources at the network that the campaign refused to allow Hillyard in the pool because of his questions on Saturday to Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-ny), a Trump surrogate, about the E. Jean Carroll case. A jury last year found Trump liable...

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

The Iowa caucus on Monday will be like no other —- and that was apparent from the start, well before subzero weather raised doubts about turnout, stymied campaigns in the final sprint and left an army of reporters and consultants seeking the warm refuge of Des Moines hotel lobbies.
The expectation is that Donald Trump will win —- but like past caucuses, that will only tell part of the story. In the race for second place, rival Nikki Haley is looking for momentum for a potential victory next week in New Hampshire, and Ron DeSantis wants to defy pundits who have written him off.
The release of the final poll before the caucuses on Saturday night —- one sponsored by the Des Moines Register, NBC News and Mediacom —- helped set expectations for the results, with much coverage framed on whether candidates exceed or under perform. The poll showed Trump...

Following his lie-laden Waco rally, Donald Trump claimed that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg “already dropped” the case against him for allegedly covering up a hush money payment to adult actress Stormy Daniels. Bragg has made no public statement that he is dropping the case. Meanwhile, Trump’s attorneys have warned him to be prepared to lose if Bragg indicts him.
“I think they’ve already dropped the case. From what I understand, I think it’s been dropped,” Trump said on his plane after the rally, per NBC News correspondent Vaughn Hillyard.

Second Update, 5 p.m. Pt: Ted Cruz told reporters on Thursday that his decision to fly to Cancun with his family amid widespread power outages in Texas was “obviously a mistake.”
“In hindsight, I wouldn’t have done it,” Cruz said. “I was trying to be a dad. And all of us have made decisions, when you got two girls who have been cold for two days and haven’t had heat or power and they are saying, ‘Hey, look, we don’t have school. Let’s get out of here. I think there are a lot of parents who would be like, ‘If I can do this, great.'”
Cruz was shown at the Houston airport on Thursday afternoon returning from Cancun, accompanied by police officers. The New York Times reported that a member of Cruz’s staff requested assistance when the senator arrived.

President Trump really wants the coronavirus to go away — not so much because American lives will be saved, but so the economy, and with it his re-election prospects, can rev back up as we head into the meat of 2020. He laid bare his lack of regard for the former on Monday by expressing a desire to scrap recommendations from public-health officials and encourage people to return to work, even though it would mean more lives lost.
But the president’s reckless attitude toward the health of his constituents has been evident throughout the crisis.

It’s another presidential election year, and with it we’ve got another Super Tuesday in the Democratic primary. With 14 states and American Samoa holding national and local primaries on March 3, all the news networks will be out in force with special live coverage. And yes, of course, that includes NBC News.
A lot of the Democratic presidential candidates have cleared themselves out of the race ahead of Super Tuesday, which means things are really ramping up and getting serious. So many folks around the country will be tuning in to see if these votes will give us a real frontrunner for the nomination. And NBC News will provide pretty exhaustive coverage, and it’ll all be available to stream for free.
The NBC News Now streaming service will kick things off at 7 p.m. Et/4 p.m. Pt, which is when the first polls close. The streaming-only special will be hosed by Chuck Todd.

Most of the media that has trekked to Iowa over the past few days is doing what is known as “parachuting,” or swooping in to cover a story before moving on to the next.
Since Donald Trump’s shocking victory in 2016, it’s become a bit of a caricature for reporters to try to make sense of red state America by chatting up patrons at small-town diners.
By contrast, NBC News’ Vaughn Hillyard, a member of the network’s team of “road warriors,” has been dispatched to Iowa for much of the past year and has spent more days in the state than anywhere else over the past five years. He’ll be part of the network’s coverage on Monday, with Lester Holt anchoring from New York and Chuck Todd in Iowa as entrance polls and results come in, while Rachel Maddow, Brian Williams and Nicole Wallace headline MSNBC...
