Mason Thames
In an exclusive IMDb interview, Mason Thames, who stars in Universal's upcoming live-action 'How to Train Your Dragon' (2025), shared that his ballet training proved instrumental in bringing the iconic character of Hiccup to life. "It really helped me with taking direction and especially with Hiccup's movement and physicality," Thames revealed. The actor worked extensively with lead puppeteer Tom Wilton to develop chemistry with a practical Toothless puppet head during filming in Belfast. Thames also underwent horseback riding training with a black horse named Prince to help inform his interactions with the CGI dragon. Thames spoke reverently about joining the franchise that shaped his childhood, describing his emotional response during his first costume fitting. "Seeing myself as Hiccup, somebody I looked up to so much as a kid, I got really emotional," he shared. The actor worked closely with Gerard Butler, who returns as Stoick, to develop their father-son dynamic through intensive workshop scenes. Director Dean DeBlois maintained consistent communication with Thames during production delays, reassuring him about his role. While Thames remained tight-lipped about the already-announced 2027 sequel, he praised DeBlois's vision for the franchise. The film features practical sets including full builds of Berk village, the arena, and Hiccup's workshop, with CGI limited primarily to the dragon characters.

At just 17 years old, Mason Thames has established himself as a sought-after young talent. He is best known for his starring role opposite Ethan Hawke in the Universal Pictures feature THE BLACK PHONE, in which he played "Finney Blake," a shy but clever 13-year-old boy who's being held in a soundproof basement by a sadistic, masked killer (played by Hawke). THE BLACK PHONE was directed by Scott Derrickson and executive produced by Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions. He will reprise his role in the upcoming sequel due for release on October 17, 2025.

Next up, Thames will lead the Universal Pictures live-action adaptation of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, bringing to life the beloved character of "Hiccup" from the original animated movie. The film is directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, and will release on June 13, 2025.

Thames will then lead the Green Day-inspired comedy feature, NEW YEARS REV, which is directed by Lee Kirk and produced by Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool. In Spring 2025, he will begin production on the Colleen Hoover adaptation of REGRETTING YOU alongside Dave Franco, Scott Eastwood, Allison Williams, and McKenna Grace. The film will release on October 24, 2025.

Thames most recently starred in the Artists Road/Spyglass feature INCOMING, which is currently streaming on Netflix. Directed by Dave and John Chernin, the comedy follows four incoming freshmen as they navigate the terrors of adolescence at their first-ever high school party. He also starred opposite Mel Gibson as "Noah Reed" in MONSTER SUMMER, the recently released coming-of-age adventure-thriller directed by David Henrie.

Thames began acting at 11 years old, but his love of performing started at an early age while studying ballet. He was selected to perform with a professional international ballet company with whom he toured for four years as the youngest cast member.

Thames is represented by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
