He was the last surviving RAF ace who fought in the Battle of Britain. At the time, he was a sergeant flying fighter planes known as Hurricanes, which fought alongside Spitfires. Afterwards he was commissioned as an officer. He served in Malta, North Africa, and Iraq, and retired from the RAF as a wing commander in 1958.
