Documentary follows the baloeiros, who illegally build and release huge decorated balloons in cities, from where they can travel hundreds of miles
An intriguing film set in Brazil, first shown last year at the Cph:dox documentary festival in Copenhagen, in which expatriate Danish film-maker Sissel Morell Dargis takes a look at a unique grassroots cultural phenomenon: the baloeiros, the ballooners. These are groups of young men, as secretive and loyal to each other as Freemasons, who (illegally) build and release huge decorated balloons in cities, from where they can travel hundreds of miles. Why? As kind of graffiti, or a community self-expression, or situationist artform, or just a subversive gesture of pure joie de vivre that does not need or admit of any explanation.
The baloeiros are harassed by the police, on the ostensible grounds that they are part of gang culture, and the authorities encourage local people to inform...

Roger Durling can’t conceal his excitement for the 40th edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
The Sbiff director sees the need for a celebration of art as Los Angeles, 90 minutes or so to the south of Santa Barbara, begins to recover from devastating wildfires that destroyed large areas of the county.
“It gives you a sense of togetherness, a sense of community, and that’s what we need right now. I have always found that in the most difficult times in my life, film festivals and films have always been a beacon,” Durling says.
Sbiff and Direct Relief are partnering in a response to the wildfires as well, accepting donations for relief and putting up a $100,000 matching grant. “We’re going to be printing limited edition 40th anniversary T-shirts, and then all the funds from the merchandise will go towards the Direct Relief fund,” he says.

“As the tragic events in our sister city of Los Angeles were unfolding, we debated about moving forward with Sbiff,” said Roger Durling, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. “Film has always been a conduit for comfort and renewal, and film festivals play a vital role in fostering a sense of connection. Festivals build community, and create an outlet for the process of feelings. In light of this, it became...

Opening Cph:dox’s popular “Film:makers in Dialogue” industry section on Monday, the directors of “Balomania” and “Kix,” running in the main Dox and Next:Wave segments respectively, met to discuss the challenges and ethics involved in following protagonists on the margins of society over many years, and the impact they hope to generate.
Shot over more than a decade, “Balomania” by Sissel Morell Dargis is the fascinating and wild story of secret gangs from Brazil’s favelas who make and chase gigantic hot air balloons.
Dargis came across what she calls the “balloon guys” as a 19-year-old graffiti artist on the streets of Brazil. Fascinated by their art, which is illegal and can land the “baloeiros” in jail because of the threat it poses to public safety, she had to earn their trust in order to follow them on their underground journeys to locations where they build and launch the balloons.
