‘Shrinking’ team on the moment that was ‘too hard to handle’
Image
No sophomore slump here. While the first season of Shrinking certainly made its mark, Season 2 returned with a vengeance — improving not only its Rotten Tomatoes score (up to 97 percent from 91 percent) but also its Emmy results, with seven nominations overall (up from just two). This time out, not only were the actors recognized — including Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, and Michael Urie — but the below-the-line team as well. Their contributions proved key to the chemistry that keeps the series crackling.

Casting: It's all about balance

With stars like Ford, Segel, and Williams, the opportunities for Shrinking are anything but. Yet casting director Debby Romano — who earned her fourth Emmy nomination, after three nods for her work on Scrubs — prefers finding the right person rather than the biggest name. “You get served up a lot of shiny names that really want to be on the show,” she says. “But [co-creator] Brett...

The nominees, who each had to submit a 30-minute composition reel from the season to showcase their work, also explained how they judge their peers and what they were most proud of accomplishing on their respective shows.

Deadline: This casting category encompasses the best comedies on television right now. How do you decide which show is more awards worthy than the other?

Destiny Lilly: Fun fact: we actually can’t vote for ourselves. We are not allowed to vote in the category we’re nominated in. People just...

Image
The Jensen Ackles-led Countdown has finally overtaken its top genre streaming competition - for now.

Per Collider, Amazon Prime Video's Countdown starring Jensen Ackles has officially overtaken its closest streaming competition, the hit Bosch spinoff series, Ballard. As of the time of writing, Countdown stands firmly in the number two position on the chart of top streaming series on the platform, although both it and Ballard are still far behind the number one show on the list, The Summer I Turned Pretty, which is currently in the middle of its third season.

Created by showrunner Derek Haas, Countdown stars Ackles as LAPD Detective Mark Meachum, one of several highly qualified and specialized agents brought in from numerous law enforcement agencies to form a crack squad in the wake of the assassination of a Department of Homeland Security Officer. 'Ballard' Star Celebrated 'Bosch' Spinoff Success as Series Continues To Dominate Prime Video
Image
Bosch fans were worried about what they would watch now that the Titus Welliver-led series has ended, but Ballard has very quickly become a go-to replacement series on Prime Video. The new series starring Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, with Welliver guest-starring as Harry Bosch, has led the Prime Video chart since its debut two weeks ago after earning a perfect Rotten Tomatoes critic score and a solid 78% from audiences. Someone who is really pleased about that is star Courtney Taylor.

In Ballard, Taylor plays Samira Parker, and while she knew that everyone making the series loved it – including Welliver – having critics and audiences feel the same has made it so much better. She told ScreenRant:

“I'm literally on cloud nine. I could not have imagined a better reaction from all of the Bosch fans, all of the Michael Connolly fans, and even the new fans that are coming out.

Why Harrison Ford's 94% Rt Apple TV+ Show Is More Than Your Average Comedy, Explained By Star
Image
Shrinking star Courtney Taylor has shared why she believes the Apple TV+ show is so different from the average comedy series. The Emmy-nominated Shrinking has made waves since its debut in 2023, lauded for its portrayal of grief, anger, shame, forgiveness, and unconventional yet hilarious family dynamics.

With a found family made up of three very different therapists – Jimmy (Jason Segel), Gabby (Jessica Williams), and Paul (Harrison Ford) – as well as Jimmy's daughter, one of his patients, his neighbors, his best friend from college, and his friends' other family members, the show doesn't shy away from showing love in all its different forms.

This extends to Gabby's sister, Courtney, and their somewhat strained relationship with their mother, who needs additional at-home care. Courtney Taylor, who portrays Courtney on the show, explained what makes Shrinking such a compelling narrative to be a part of beyond getting to stretch her comedic muscles.

Bosch Replacement Show With 100% Rt Score Gets Exciting Season 2 Update After Recent Premiere
Image
Ballardstar Maggie Q explains why she isn't reading reviews for the series ahead of Season 2 renewal.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Q responded to the question of whether she had any sense of where the series was headed with, "I have no sense." Q explained, "This industry is not what it was before. It’s barely recognizable to me, and shows are so expendable. They can throw out a show in two seconds, and it doesn’t make a ton of difference that whole worlds and livelihoods are at stake."

"Studios always have options. But we have a writers room, and they've been writing away," Q continued. "The arc for the second season is very exciting. But I've had writers room hired before and then gotten canceled. So everyone's like, 'Maggie, of course!' I'm like, 'No, no, no.' There is no 'of course.' I am not a negative person at all.

Ballard: Rhd Police Meaning Revealed (And It's the Same from Bosch)
Image
The meaning of Rhd in Ballard and Bosch is the same, but it has a far deeper impact on Renée Ballard (Maggie Q). The new 10-episode Amazon Prime Video series followed the story of the titular former detective who was demoted to the Cold Case department after she filed a sexual harassment claim against one of her peers in the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). As one of the leaders of the LAPD's underfunded departments, Ballard continued to showcase her tenacious mentality, which led her team to uncover a broader LAPD conspiracy.

Before she dove into cold cases, Ballard was part of a renowned department (Rhd) of the LAPD that was tasked with handling unique cases. However, the Rhd's reputation was severely damaged after some of its detectives were exposed as dirty.

The Bosch: Legacy spinoff series featured an incredible cast led by Maggie Q, Ricardo Chavira, Michael Mosley, John Carroll Lynch,...

Maggie Q on the Future of ‘Ballard,’ Battling Typecasting and Learning to Pass on Opportunities: “I Can Say No to Things With a Smile on My Face”
Image
Maggie Q might just be good vibes personified. The Hawaiian-born actress, known for kicking actual ass over four seasons of Nikita and on features such as Mission Impossible III, Live Free or Die Hard and The Protégé, isn’t just the opposite of intimidating over coffee in Beverly Hills. She’s showing pictures of her dogs in the custom-made tuxedos she commissioned for her recent wedding, sharing a recommendation for a budget-friendly veterinary dentist — canine teeth are quite expensive — and winning over the staff of the Four Seasons hotel where she’s spent a couple of days.

She’s in town to promote Ballard, her new Amazon Prime Video drama that premiered July 9. A spinoff of another spinoff (Bosch follow-up, Bosch: Legacy) and based on similar IP (it hails from blockbuster novelist Michael Connelly), it stars Q as the titular lead of the LAPD’s cold cases unit. Ballard Show Confirms What Olivas Did to Ballard In Episode 5: 'The Whole Nice Guy Act Just Disappeared'
Image
Ballard Episode 5 confirmed what Lieutenant Robert Olivas (Ricardo Chavira) did to Renée Ballard (Maggie Q), and it's terrible. When the latest Prime Video series began, Ballard clearly had some baggage, and it had something to do with a past trauma inflicted by one of her peers from the Robbery-Homicide Division (Rhd). Throughout the show's run, Ballard was frowned upon by some of the male police officers and detectives because of an Hr case she filed against Olivas.

The first four episodes of the crime drama, Ballard, only provided tidbits about what Olivas actually did, but it was clear that Renée was traumatized to the point that she needed therapy to get over it. In Episode 5, a full picture of what transpired was revealed, showing the massive impact of Olivas' actions against Ballard.

Mimi Rogers, Titus Welliver, and Madison Lintz in Bosch: Legacy (2022)
Interviews: Maggie Q and co-stars discuss the Bosch spin-off Ballard
Mimi Rogers, Titus Welliver, and Madison Lintz in Bosch: Legacy (2022)
Mockingly referred to as “your dad’s favorite show”, Bosch was a long-running hit for Prime Video followed by the sequel series Bosch: Legacy, which ran for three seasons. Bosch: Legacy recently ended its run and included Maggie Q in the finale as the title character in her own series, Ballard. Based on the novels by Michael Connelly, Ballard brings a new perspective to the shared universe inhabited by Harry Bosch but with a new point of view

Ballard follows Detective Renée Ballard (Q) as she leads the LAPD’s new and underfunded cold case division, tackling the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination. As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, including a serial killer’s string of murders and a murdered John Doe, she soon uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the LAPD. With the help of her volunteer team and retired detective...

Ballard Is the Reason We Should Finally Stop Pretending Netflix’s The Recruit Was Good
Image
Detective shows have been all the rage on streaming in recent years. From shows about the CIA to MI6, streaming services are traveling the globe with their mission to get the world hooked on this genre. Since 2022, it has tried to establish The Recruit as the front-runner for the same. However, with the release of Ballard, a lot is changing for the CIA series.

Although Noah Centineo’s show managed to gain enough relevance to get a second season, does it meet the mark that Ballard now seems to be setting? Even though the Bosch spin-off just got released, it seems to have better reviews, and this could be a cause for concern for The Recruit.

Ballard Season 1 Cast And Character Guide
Image
Amazon Prime’s Ballard works so well not just due to the brilliant narrative and bold reflection of societal horrors faced by women in the workplace—especially in law enforcement—but also because of its stellar cast. While Maggie Q is simply phenomenal as the lead detective, the makers have imbued all the supporting cast with enough personality to make them feel like living, breathing characters with their personal struggles, aspirations, virtues, and vices. While some members of the cold case division might come off as archetypal, the superb dynamics between them and teamwork make for such an exciting watch. Aside from them, there are obvious cameos from larger Bosch universe characters, who appear in a limited capacity but might have a bigger role in the second season of Ballard.

Image
Prime Video’s “Bosch” spinoff series is here, and you’ll probably recognize quite a few faces in “Ballard.” But, if you’re struggling to place them, we can help you out.

Now streaming, and based on Michael Connelly’s bestselling novels, “Ballard” centers on Detective Renee Ballard, the fearless new leader of LAPD’s cold case unit. The thing about this unit is, it’s made up entirely of volunteers, and has no money being funneled into it to help.

Still, those volunteers are pretty good. Here’s who you’ll recognize among them.

‘Ballard’ Review: Maggie Q Brings Heart and Grit to Excellent ‘Bosch’ Spinoff
Image
Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) first showed up on screen in the series finale of “Bosch: Legacy,” where she and Harry F—king Bosch (Titus Welliver) reluctantly worked on a case together. But even if you’ve not seen an episode of “Bosch,” you’ll get oriented to “Ballard” right quick. It’s one of the great TV procedurals in recent years, a feat of plotting, character, performance, and using the medium to poke at a society that breeds it.

Q’s detective is working in a literal and figurative basement in the hierarchy of the LAPD, trying to crack the coldest of cases after an accusation of misconduct rankled the wrong feathers up the chain of command. With an island of misfit toys — that is to say, volunteer law enforcement that are retired, reserve or just civilians — Ballard does her diligence to ensure justice for the people whose cases have long been forgotten,...

Maggie Q Leads Prime Video’s Superb ‘Bosch’ Spinoff ‘Ballard’: TV Review
Image
Based on the beloved novels by Michael Connelly and adapted for television by Kendall Sherwood and Michael Alaimo, Prime Video’s “Ballard” — a spinoff of “Bosch” and “Bosch: Legacy” — is one of the best police procedurals on TV. Set in Los Angeles, “Ballard” follows Detective Renée Ballard (an outstanding Maggie Q). Recently ousted from the Robbery and Homicide division for blowing the whistle on a popular cop, Ballard finds herself sequestered in the basement, in command of LAPD’s newly formed Cold Case Division. As the only full-time staffer in the severely underfunded unit, Ballard must rely on her own experience, moxy and a motley crew of volunteers to weed through the countless long-forgotten, decades-old homicides. However, when Ballard is tasked with solving the murder of a politician’s sister, she uncovers some truly devastating twists and a shocking web of corruption that threatens to bury her. ‘Ballard’ Prime Video Review: ‘Bosch’ Spin-off Reminiscent Of Netflix’s ‘Dept Q’
Image
Amazon Prime’s Ballard will definitely remind you of Netflix’s recent hit show, Dept Q, and drawing a comparison between the two is only natural. The plot is pretty much the same—a detective is tasked with investigating cold cases with limited resources, and as we know by now, the team usually consists of a ragtag bunch of misfits. Their idiosyncrasies not only add depth to the story but also bring in multiple perspectives and introduce side plots that are equally intriguing. The difference between Dept Q and Ballard is definitely in their treatment, which in a way reflects the worldview of the central characters.

What is all the more interesting is that both shows are adapted from book series—Dept Q is based on Jussi Adler Olsen’s Danish book series, and Ballard is adapted from the Renee Ballard series by Michael Connelly. If you’re a Bosch fan,...

Plot: Ballard continues to bring Michael Connelly’s bestselling novels to life, following Detective Renée Ballard as she leads the LAPD’s new and underfunded cold case division, tackling the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination. As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, including a serial killer’s string of murders and a murdered John Doe, she soon uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the LAPD. With the help of her volunteer team and retired detective Harry Bosch, Detective Ballard navigates personal trauma, professional challenges, and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth.

Review: Bosch has been a mainstay on Prime Video since 2014 when the Titus Welliver-led procedural series began adapting the long-running novel series by Michael Connelly. After seven seasons and a three-season sequel, Bosch: Legacy, the original show came to an end back in April with an episode that introduced viewers to Renee Ballard.

Maggie Q Says 'Ballard' Is Not Riding the Coattails of 'Bosch' With Nostalgia
Image
For a little over a decade, viewers have followed the personal and professional life of LAPD detective Harry Bosch. Played byTitus Welliver, Boschpremiered on Amazon Prime Video on February 6, 2014, and went on to produce 68 episodes through seven seasons. When it ended in 2021, that wasn't the last time fans of the police procedural saw the main character. Its first spin-off, Bosch: Legacy, which premiered in 2022 on Amazon Freevee, followed a retired Bosch who worked as a private investigator. In its third and final season, viewers were introduced to Detective Renée Ballard, played by Maggie Q, in the last episode, which served as a minorintroduction to Bosch: Legacy's spin-off, Ballard. However, it will not be nostalgic, according to the leading actress.

During an interview with Collider, Maggie Q revealed that although the series is connected to Bosch, because it is a spin-off, it won't lean on familiarity.

"We're not looking to rehash the same things.

"It's Really, Really Good": 'Bosch' Creator Michael Connelly Promises 'Ballard' Won't Disappoint

Bosch: Legacy may have finally, unhappily come to a close, but the universe it built is far from over. With fans still reeling from Amazon’s decision to cancel Bosch: Legacy, Connelly’s endorsement comes at a critical moment for the franchise. While the original show may be gone, Ballard is clearly designed to keep the spirit — and the tension — alive.
