State Of The Union TV Review: Joe Biden Tackles The Age Issue Head On, Bodyslams Trump & Maga GOP In Highly Political Speech Kicking Off 2024 Election
Image

The well-worn line by the incumbent got a laugh as expected, but for Speaker Mike Johnson and many Republicans tonight, that opening line should have been a hint.

Put it another way, as Johnson and other members of his party stayed in their seats like wilting potted plants or simply walked out, the often underwhelming Biden came looking for a fight. Gifted by the flaws of his enemies, as all the most successful politicians are, Biden quickly moved from false humility to give the GOP a beatdown in a speech that most candidates would have saved for their national convention.

But, as the bizarre GOP rebuttal that Alabama’s junior Senator Katie Britt...

USC quarterback Caleb Williams said he was going home to hug his dog after the team lost to Washington, 52-42, on Saturday, the Trojans’ third loss in four games after a 6-0 start.

He wasn’t the only one struggling. After the game, Southern California fired defensive coordinator Alex Grinch with two games left in the disappointing regular season.

USC, now 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the Pac-12, surrendered 572 yards and 52 points to No. 5 Washington. USC was unranked in Sunday’s AP Top 25 for the first time in coach Lincoln Riley’s two-year tenure at the school.

USC will have defensive line coach Shaun Nua and inside linebackers Coach Brian Odom as co-defensive coordinators for the remainder of the season, which includes games against Oregon and UCLA before a llikely minor bowl game.

USC Quarterback Caleb Williams Is The Heisman Trophy Winner
Image
USC quarterback Caleb Williams is officially college football’s best player, winning the 2022 Heisman Trophy on Saturday night.

His triumph makes USC the first school to win the player of the year award eight times. He is the first Trojan since 2005’s win by Reggie Bush, whose award was later vacated when an investigation found that he accepted what, at the time, were considered to be improper benefits.

Williams received 544 first-place votes and 2,031 points to beat runner-up Max Duggan, the Tcu quarterback, who had 1,420 points.

The star quarterback transferred from Oklahoma to USC, reuniting with coach Lincoln Riley. Williams is the fourth transfer to win the Heisman in the past six years — joining Baker Mayfield (2017) and Kyler Murray (2018) of Oklahoma, and Joe Burrow (2019) of Lsu.

Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud was third in the voting after coming in fourth last season. Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett finished fourth.

Williams will next...

‘Tulsa King’ Trailer: Sylvester Stallone Brings the Mafia to the Great Plains
Image
Here’s a sentence you probably didn’t have on your streaming wars bingo card a few years ago: Sylvester Stallone is heading to Tulsa.

The “Rocky” star is taking on his first major television role in “Tulsa King,” a new Paramount+ series from creator Taylor Sheridan. The mafia drama stars Stallone as a longtime gangster who finds himself forced to relocate to Oklahoma to establish a new racketeering and gambling operation for his former family (as if Lincoln Riley didn’t leave the state with enough problems to deal with). Once he gets there, he finds himself making a big splash in the otherwise-sleepy criminal underbelly of the Sooner State’s second largest city as only Sylvester Stallone can.

According to the show’s official synopsis, “Tulsa King” follows “New York mafia capo Dwight ‘The General’ Manfredi (Stallone) just after he is released from prison after 25 years and unceremoniously...

Top College Football Star Jordan Addison Transfers To USC In Major Test Of New NCAA Nil Rule
Image
The new NCAA Name, Image, Likeness rule (Nil) that allows college athletes to monetize themselves could be at a crossroads. Top college receiver Jordan Addison is transferring from Pittsburgh to the University of Southern California amid rumors of massive booster blandishments.

He announced his decision today on social media.

Addison won the Biletnikoff Award as the country’s top wide receiver in 2021, and is considered one of the most prominent college players targeted for next year’s NFL draft. His decision to transfer can be viewed as a marketing test for the value of a college football star, which could set off a huge bidding war next year for transfer talent that goes beyond anything previously seen (or unseen) under more restrictive rules.

Typically, college football transfers are players disgruntled with their lack of playing time, or moving to be closer to home. In Addison’s case, his move is...

USC Names Lincoln Riley As New Trojans Football Head Coach, Ending Three-Month Search
Image
The University of Southern California has landed one of the biggest fish in college football, naming Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley to take over its faltering football program.

USC has been looking for a new coach since dismissing Clay Helton in mid-September. It took its time in the search and has answered the prayers of Trojan fans anxious for a return to football glory after several lackluster years.

Riley is considered one of the bright young innovators in college football. He becomes the 30th head coach of the Trojans and takes over a program that struggled in 2021 to an overall 4-7 record in the Pac-12, going 3-5 in league action.

Riley led Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff in each of his first three seasons as their coach. He has won 55 games and four consecutive Big 12 championships as the Sooners coach, while finishing no lower than seventh in the polls in any of his five seasons.
