In the late 1970s, Afghanistan stood at a critical crossroads, suspended between socialist aspirations and the imminent Soviet invasion. The political chaos of this period created a precarious environment for potential social shifts—especially for women.
As the country explored new ideas, the fleeting moment for women’s learning and self-determination quickly transformed into a contested space, where possibility wrestled against deeply rooted societal constraints and emerging conservative pressures.
For Suraya and Sima, the film explores the fragile interplay between personal dreams and external threats. Their connection, rooted in a shared vision of societal change, becomes increasingly complex as they confront the oppressive dynamics of external intervention and internal ideological conflicts.
Their story raises a profound question about social transformation: Can meaningful change emerge when overwhelmed by historical burdens and persistent struggle?

Iranian artist and filmmaker Shahab Fotouhi’s “Boomerang” has debuted an exclusive clip (below) following the film’s world premiere in Venice Days, an independent sidebar to the Venice Film Festival.
In his tender drama, set in Tehran, old relationships break – like Sima’s marriage to Behzad – and new ones begin. Sometimes, by complete chance.
As Sima starts looking for a new home for herself and her daughter Minoo, her soon-to-be ex meets up with his former flame. He’s also looking for a rare species of owl, living somewhere outside the city. But teenage Minoo is busy as well: she meets a boy.
“Minoo and Keyvan first make eye contact at a traffic light and quickly form a bond without exchanging a word. As they walk through the city and flirt, ‘Boomerang’ captures a sense of lightness and fluidity reminiscent of the French New Wave,” said the director.

In Oprah Winfrey’s newest television special Shame, Blame, and the Weight Loss Revolution, the celebrated television host tells the crowd that when she got over the excitement of first appearing on the cover of TV Guide, she noticed a demeaning headline referencing her weight. “Bumpy, lumpy, and downright dumpy,” the magazine read. That sentiment would be echoed in the hateful and rude treatment, Winfrey said, that has followed her throughout her career.
“I took on the shame that the world gave to me,” Winfrey, 70, said in her newest special.

After Indian Matchmaking season 2 was released on Netflix, Nadia Jagessar's hypocrisy was noticed immediately. Deviating from the first season, the show included previous cast members and many new stars who have quickly become fan favorites. This decision wasn't a big hit with some viewers, as almost no successful matches were made between the first and second seasons. Despite the lack of marital success, Indian Matchmaking season 4 could still be in the works.
Aparna Shewakramani, Pradhyuman Maloo, and Nadia returned in Indian Matchmaking season 2. While Aparna moved to New York with her initial flame Jay Wadhwani, he was quickly friend-zoned. Pradhyuman was introduced to a new girlfriend, Ashima Chauhan, whom he proposed to and married on the show. Meanwhile, while there was a prospect of Nadia and Shekar Jayaraman's union at the end of season 1, Nadia dumped Shekar shortly into the season.

Jewish Matchmaking is the newest gem in the Netflix reality crown, but it was preceded by the very sparkly Indian Matchmaking, and it's time to talk about how the two shows compare. Both have their pros and cons, but only one of these similar series can come out on top. Sharing their good and bad points makes it quite simple to decide which show "wins." Of course, opinions are subjective, and since both series are fun to watch, viewers never lose.
Indian Matchmaking has been around since 2020, but Jewish Matchmaking season 1 recently released. While one series has more longevity, their premises are quite similar. Within that "matchmaker helps couples" framework, some key differences begin to emerge, if subtly, and they are important. It's not about preferring one culture to another, or anything like that. This comparison is about deciding which show offers the most of what reality TV viewers really want - entertainment value.

Indian Matchmaking star Sima Taparia and her questionable success rate makes Netflix viewers wonder if any of the couples on the show managed to stay together or get married. Sima, a matchmaker from Mumbai, became a household name thanks to the overnight success of season 1. Sima charges a hefty fee to help Asian singles find a match as per their religious and physical preferences, and received 5,000 calls in a day after the show aired. She jet sets around the world and has helped cast members meet like-minded people by putting in her best efforts, even when the stars aren't aligned.
Matchmaker Sima recently starred on Indian Matchmaking season 3. Filled with drama, tears, unrealistic demands, and meme-worthy one-liners, the new season shockingly featured love stories that received happy endings. The cast had their fair share of doubts and bouts of pickiness, from someone preferring a poet to another wanting a man with a top knot.

Indian Matchmaking season 3 introduced its most controversial cast member yet with Vikash Mishra, Sima Taparia's 40-year-old client from California. While returning couple Viral Joshi and Aashay Shah from Indian Matchmaking season 2 stayed together, Sima was unable to get anyone married in the third season. Vikash, who described himself as the “life of the party,” was a difficult client who turned out to be problematic.
During his Indian Matchmaking season 3 introduction, Vikash joked he wanted to find a Hindi-speaking doctor from the “same community” his parents are from. He wanted to focus equally on looks and personality but was aware he had been single for so long that men his age in his community are likely grandfathers. Indian Matchmaking season 2 featured Shital Patel and Niraj Mehta, and it's time to discuss the current relationship status of these two cast members. They were still together when season 3 ended. The 38-year-old New Jersey-based Shital was looking for "The One," and that’s when Indian Matchmaking matchmaker Sima Taparia came to her rescue. Sima, who’s believed to charge a hefty fee, however, was unable to find a, “60 to 70 percent” match for Shital. Shital met Viral Kothari and Avinash Shingwan, but nothing happened beyond the dates, until Shital met Niraj on her own through her sister.
Indian Matchmaking star Shital called Niraj, “amazing.” He was a radiation oncologist and a Gujarati doctor, and it seemed like the couple were meant to be. After all, Shital wanted to meet someone, “organically” before Sima got involved. According to Shital, she was a, “high-value woman with high standards.” She wouldn't settle down with...

Indian Matchmaking season 3 star Aashay Shah clearly made a great impression on the Sima Taparia-helmed show, for many good reasons. One of the most talked about reality TV shows on Netflix returned in 2023, with a new cast and old favorites like Aashay and Viral Joshi. The 37-year-old New York City resident Aashay moved to the U.S. when he was 12 years old. Sima introduced Viral, a 32-year-old pharmaceutical developer from Durham, to Aashay, who is a Doctor of Optometry. Viral and Aashay's first rock climbing date was anything but rocky, and they ended up together.
When Indian Matchmaking star Viral saw Aashay, it was love at first sight. “Oh my God, he’s so cute, his hair is great,” Viral gushed about Aashay to the cameras after meeting him. Viral's parents also took an instant liking to Viral. They were blown away by the fact that he could read and write Gujarati.

Indian Matchmaking returned for season 3 in April, and there are facts to share about how the cast members are doing now. Indian Matchmaking shows matchmaker Sima Taparia helping clients from all over the world. In the age of dating apps, she assists them as they go a different route, navigating the arranged marriage process. While Sima may charge a hefty fee to help her single clients find the best matches, it doesn't necessarily mean that the show's stars end up together.
Sima may not have the best success rate on the Smriti Mundhra-created show, Indian Matchmaking, but she claims that she got thousands of phone calls per day after the series launched. Sima advises her clients, who are educated and modern, to compromise, while doling out her classic one-liners. She's a major reason for the series' success, and Sima's probably getting richer thanks to her high society clients. There's...

Indian Matchmaking season 3 star Arti Lalwani got engaged to Jamal, and Netflix viewers are interested in knowing if the couple's still together. The popular Netflix show doesn’t have a high success rate in terms of marriages. Plus, Sima Taparia's unique quotes and punchlines sometimes make one wonder if Indian Matchmaking is scripted or real. However, Sima is definitely a genuine matchmaker from Mumbai. She's become so immensely popular due to reality TV fame that she received 5000 calls a day after the series' 2020 premiere. The fees that Sima charges may have increased as her notoriety grew.

Indian Matchmaking season 2 featured Viral Joshi and Aashay Shah, and it's time to discuss the current relationship status of the two reality alums, who were still dating each other six months later, in season 3. Viral, based in North Carolina, was the star of the Netflix show in 2022. The Ovo-lacto-semi-vegetarian pharmaceutical developer from Durham was fiercely independent. Viral, 30, wanted a partner who would be Gujarati, taller than her (she's 5 feet 8 inches), and self-made too. The "girl boss" met New York-based 37-year-old Aashay Shah, who was working as an optometrist, after rejecting two of Sima Aunty's proposed matches, Viral Kothari and Jaymin Mehta.
Viral's furniture store date with her namesake Viral on Indian Matchmaking didn’t deter her from finding an immediate connection with Aashay. She thought they had chemistry, and their first rock-climbing date in North Carolina was very successful. Things got a little rough when Viral visited Aashay in New York City.

Benito Zambrano’s “Jumping the Fence” joins Roya Sadat’s “Sima’s Song,” and Pau Calpe’s “Werewolf” in the lineup of Spanish Screenings Goes to Cannes, a selection of five pix in post which underscores the ever broadening compass – in genre, setting, protagonists, production bases and models – of film production in Spain.
“Sima’s Song,” for example, is set in 1979 Kabul, “Jumping the Fence” on the Morocco-Spain border in Africa.
Many titles, though still in post production, come laden with prizes as projects, prestige deals or rich talent. “Sima’s Song,” from Afghan director Roya Sadat, whose “A Letter to the President” was shortlisted for an Oscar, won the Taicca Award at Busan’s Asian Project Market and the Ifi-Pas Award at Mumbai’s Film Bazaar. Its producer, Alba Sotorra, was nominated for an International Emmy as a director for “The Return: Life After Isis.”

Netflix’s controversial reality TV show Indian Matchmaking season 2 is now available to stream, and here’s where to find the cast members, both old and new, on Instagram. The 2022 edition of Indian Matchmaking consists of a combination of faces from Sima Taparia’s roster who are looking for a match made in heaven. These singles, some tired of dating apps, some wanting to find a soulmate, and some racing against their biological clocks, count on Mumbai matchmaker Sima as they browse through eligible partners in eight one-hour episodes.
With their internet fame growing overnight, singles from Indian Matchmaking season 1 have become celebrities in their own right. However, the newbies who believe in Sima’s “magic wand” are getting a taste of the same. The binge-able cringe-ness that Indian Matchmaking provides so generously has gone nowhere. Afghan filmmaker Roya Sadat (who saw her debut film A Letter To The President preem in Locarno) appears to be moments away from embarking on the production of her sophomore feature. Screen Daily reports Sima’s Song (formerly known as The Forgotten History) is moving swimmingly landing some players and a backdrop that might surprise some as a stand-in for Kabul. Sadat will be filming the dramatic thriller in Greece, with Mozhdah Jamalzadah, Leen Alam and Niloufar Koukhani. The role of Sima does not appear to be cast yet. Sounds like a counter-point argument will be made by Sadat. The project was supported by the Eurimages fund back in March ’22.…...

Smriti Mundhra cannot be pigeonholed into one oeuvre. The creator of Netflix’s popular “Indian Matchmaking,” which released its second season recently, directed two episodes of Mindy Kaling’s “Never Have I Ever” for the same streamer, and a segment of Brie Larson’s upcoming Disney+ docuseries “Growing Up.” Her “Shelter” doc short on homelessness is nominated for a news and documentary Emmy, as part of HBO Max series “Through Our Eyes.”
Mundhra, whose father, Jagmohan, was also a filmmaker and ran the Culver City theater Meralta, took that name for her production company. “What I love about making films and this work is that it puts a human face on these kinds of big problems.”
Mundhra says viewers are drawn to “Indian Matchmaking” because it engages with topics that we don’t talk about a lot. “Some of it is cringey,” she says. “Some of the things we do...
