Yet, its kids movies section might be its most underrated aspect, because to quote WWE superstar Sheamus, "It's banger after banger after banger." It's nonstop entertainment for the young and the young at heart.

So, how exactly did we pick the top 15 kids movies on Netflix right now? What was the methodology used? The approach was twofold. One, each movie needed to have a good-to-great critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. And two, a mix of personal preference and general audience reception toward the films played pivotal roles in the final selection. Lyle the crocodile is not meant to be judged by his exterior, just like Bernard Waber’s childrens book from which he originated. If both were judged by their covers, readers and viewers would surely miss out.

“We made the movie because we loved the book,” said director Josh Gordon in an interview with TheWrap. “And the story behind the book, which to us was really about embracing joy and the power of love to save people and unlock potential.”

Based on a popular children’s book, Lyle Lyle Crocodile revolves around the talented scaly creature who is found by an ageing, desperate showman Hector P. Valenti. After training Lyle to sing and dance, Hector is dismayed to learn that Lyle also has crippling stage freight. When Hector has to go on the road to earn money, he abandons Lyle in his attic apartment. Soon a young family move in, and young son Josh discovers Lyle and strikes up a blossoming, musical friendship.

The creative mandate for the VFX team on “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” was to deliver a premium film with a singing and dancing CG character that both adults and children could believe was real.

Bernard Waber’s “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” book series is now a major motion picture. The live action/CGI musical comedy stars a whole host of names, including one Canadian singer as the voice of a talented crocodile. The film will feature songs performed by star Shawn Mendes and written by the songwriting team behind “The Greatest Showman” — Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — with an ensemble cast that includes Javier Bardem and Constance Wu.

For “Lyle,” Pasek and Paul are joined by Ari Afsar, Emily Gardner, Xu Hall, Mark Sonnenblick and Joriah Kwamé. Will Speck and Josh Gordon directed and produced the film, with a screenplay by Will Davies. Hutch Parker also produces, and executive producers include Kevin K. Vafi, Dan Wilson, Robert J. Although the concept behind Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile – that a singing and dancing crocodile is afflicted with crippling stage fright – falls a bit on the side of unbelievability (just a bit), the heart and soul of this film is so spot on and the performances of all involved prove just as engaging, that this ultimately plays as one of the more entertaining family films in recent memory.

Josh Gordon and Will Speck’s live-action musical “Lyle Lyle Crocodile” lives up to it name. The story, about a crocodile named Lyle voiced by Shawn Mendes that can dance and sing, features songs penned by the award-winning Justin Paul and Benj Pasek. The dup then brought in a team of songwriters to carve out toe-tapping, infectious earworms.

From the get-go songwriting and composing duo Pasek and Paul knew Lyle would be a singing crocodile which made the project all the more exciting for them. “But when the voice actor became Shawn Mendes, that really informed a lot of the style and what we were going to write for,” explains Pasek.

With Mendes attached, the writers behind “The Greatest Showman” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” could blend musical theater with contemporary pop. “The aim was to create something with his voice,” says Pasek.

Review: Lyle Lyle Crocodile is a children’s book series written by author Bernard Weber. The story revolves around a family who find they have a crocodile living in the Victorian brownstone they just purchased. Starring Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy, and Winslow Fegley, Lyle presents a new take on mixing animation with live action. And speaking of animated, you’ll also find Shawn Mendes as the musical voice behind Lyly the Crocodile. He doesn’t ever talk, but he can sure sing. And many of Mr. Mendes’s fanbase will likely be thrilled to hear his vocal talents on display. Co-directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, let’s see what all this croc action has in store.

So, are you looking for a “family-friendly” flick to perhaps introduce your “pre-k’ tots to the wonders of moviegoing? Well, many parents may be leery of much of the fare, since the “kid aimed” movies are often part of an ongoing franchise or based on a line of toys, video/computer games, or TV shows, perhaps resembling a feature-length commercial to provide “product synergy”. So where are the big-screen adaptations of classic children’s books, one that may inspire the wee ones” to (gasp) read? Well, we’ve got one opening “wide” this weekend based on a beloved tale that’s almost sixty years old. Oh, and it’s filled with music often sung by an adorable animal.

The movie format where a character beloved by kids becomes a CGI creature, who is then plugged into a live-action universe, is one of the most casually technically astonishing of all popcorn genres — and, as often as not, one of the most stunted. It almost doesn’t matter if the hero is Garfield or Stuart Little, Alvin and the Chipmunks or Sonic the Hedgehog: The way this genre has descended from the noisy bravura of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” the actors tend to be reduced to one-note stooges who get stuck in too many green-screen reaction shots, whereas the critter at the center — the animated star — is, almost inevitably, a preening chatterbox who wears out his welcome by pelting the live-action players, and the audience, with too many bad punchlines.

Whatever associations you may have with Lyle the crocodile, you probably didn’t imagine him crooning like Shawn Mendes. Based on Bernard Waber’s beloved children’s book originally published in 1965, the existence of a “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” movie proves nothing is sacred in Hollywood — especially nostalgic childhood storybooks.

If a CGI crocodile with the dulcet tenor of a pop idol seems at odds with Waber’s freehand illustrations, Javier Bardem is perfectly in step as eccentric showman Hector P. It was very New York of children’s author-illustrator Bernard Waber to turn an urban myth about misplaced reptiles into a beloved series of bedtime books about a city family adopting a friendly crocodile. And it’s very Hollywood to want to turn that beloved series of bedtime books into the unwieldy, CGI-splotched musical pablum that is “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.”

Even with a mustachioed Javier Bardem doing his bonkers best to evoke a Fellini-esque sideshow vibe as flamboyant entertainer Hector P. Valenti, the titular amphibian’s first owner, if you didn’t know that the frenetic and tinny “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” had modestly charming literary origins, you’d swear the title of this corporatized kiddie-franchise fodder was a cheeky alternative acronym for LLC.

But hey, there has to be something at the other end of the quality spectrum from the joyful do-good magic of “Paddington,” and this overwrought, clunky creature-teacher-feature...

The Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile team celebrated the world premiere of the children’s novel-turned-film in New York City on Sunday.

Stars Constance Wu, Shawn Mendes, Ego Nwodim, Scoot McNairy and newcomers Winslow Fegley and Lyric Hurd, as well as the film’s directors and producers, took to the black and white checkered carpet to talk all about their live-action project.

“It’s such a wonderful story,” producer Hutch Parker told The Hollywood Reporter. “I mean, it’s a beloved book, but it’s really the kind of spirit of Lyle that makes it so special. And it just felt like it’s the right time to be telling that kind of a story. We like to say that everybody needs a little Lyle in their life, and I think it’s really true.”

Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes debuted his new song, “Heartbeat” via Island Records last week. The track was written by Shawn, Jon Bellion, Amy Allen, Scott Harris, Jason “Tenroc” Cornet, Clyde Lawrence, and Jordan Cohen and produced by Shawn, Jon Bellion, TenRoc, and The Diner.
