How an Israeli-Palestinian Couple’s Real-Life Experience Inspired TV Show ‘Non Issue’: ‘What Is Stronger, Love or Identity?’
Image
Gal Rosenbluth, who is Israeli, and Nayef Hammoud, who is Palestinian, met in Jerusalem’s Sam Spiegel Film school and have been together for the past eight years. On Oct. 7, when the Israel-Hamas war broke out, they had to cancel plans to attend Rome’s Mia TV market to personally pitch a series titled “Non Issue” that draws on their experience as a couple.

Still, “Non Issue” won the event’s Paramount+ Award for best series pitch at Mia. And, despite the psychic wounds and practical production impediments posed by the ongoing conflict, producer Ohad Ashkenazi of United Studios Israel, who is producing “Non Issue” in tandem with Efrat Dror for Israel’s Herzelia Studios, vows that “it will happen.”

Variety spoke to Rosenbluth and Hammoud via Zoom in their Tel Aviv apartment about how the war has prompted writer’s block and made their project seem “naive,” but...

Israeli-Palestinian Romantic Comedy ‘Non-Issue’ Wins Top Drama Prize as Mia Market Closes Out Charged Edition
Image
A romantic comedy about an Israeli-Palestinian couple based on the real life story of creators Nayef Hammoud and Gal Rosenbluth, the development series “Non-Issue” won the Paramount+ drama prize at this year’s Mia Market, which wrapped its ninth edition on an optimistic note. Of course, well before Friday’s closing award ceremony, the heartbreaking crisis in the Middle East cast a heavy pall over an otherwise ebullient audiovisual market, often informing conversations professional and otherwise.

While a number of industry execs were unable to travel from Israel, and though slated speaker Ari Folman was even forced to cancel a remote interview, attendance was otherwise up across the board. The Roman film and television market welcomed 2,600 industry participants – marking a 10% increase on last year’s record, and encompassing more than 65 countries.

Running five days in Rome’s Palazzo Barberini, in the adjacent Cinema Barberini, and on an online platform that...

’68 Whiskey’ Canceled After One Season at Paramount Network
Image
Pour one out for “68 Whiskey.”

Paramount Network has canceled the dark comedy after a single season, Variety has confirmed. News of the cancelation comes around six months after the show wrapped its 10-episode run.

Blending drama with humor, “68 Whiskey” followed a multicultural band of Army medics stationed in Afghanistan on a base nicknamed “The Orphanage.” Together, the medics navigate a dangerous and sometimes absurd world, relying on comradery, various vices, and occasionally a profound sense of purpose to carry them through. The show starred Sam Keeley, Jeremy Tardy, Gage Golightly, Cristina Rodlo, Beth Riesgraf, Lamont Thompson, Nicholas Coombe and Derek Theler.

“68 Whiskey” hailed from Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and their Imagine Television banner. The duo served as executive producers on the project, alongside series creator and writer Roberto Benabib. Howard was originally lined up to direct the pilot, but that responsibility eventually fell to Michael Lehmann.

‘68 Whiskey’ Canceled By Paramount Network After One Season
Image
Exclusive: Paramount Network has opted not to pick up a second season of comedic drama 68 Whiskey, an adaptation of the Israeli TV series Charlie Golf One.

The show, from Imagine Television Studios and CBS TV Studios, was well received with a 88% fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating. It also got off to a strong TV ratings start, with the January 15 premiere drawing 2 million viewers in Live+3 Nielsen numbers to mark the most-watched cable drama series premiere in the metric since November 2018. Following the promising premiere the ratings slipped, however, and overall the series ranked outside of the Top 100 in total viewers, adults 18-49 and 25-54 year-to-date (Live+3).

68 Whiskey‘s cancellation leaves powerhouse Yellowstone as Paramount Network’s only current original scripted series. The net’s dramedy Emily In Paris recently relocated to Netflix. Paramount Network earlier this year gave a series order to drama Coyote starring Michael Chiklis.

Based on the blockbuster success of Yellowstone,...

68 Whiskey: Trailer and Release Date for Paramount Military Dramedy Series
Joseph Baxter Nov 25, 2019

Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Paramount Network series, 68 Whiskey, will manifest as a military dramedy.

68 Whiskey is ready to make its mark as the next blue-chip television offering on the rebranded-from-Spike-tv and still-burgeoning Paramount Network, set as the first original series to accompany its hit drama, Yellowstone.

The series, an Americanized adaptation of Israeli television offering Charlie Golf One, is a modern military dramedy that arrives under the auspices of executive producers in Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Of course, 68 Whiskey will immediately evoke the memory of M*A*S*H., since, like that classic series, it centers on the daily travails (and hijinks) of military combat medics – in this case stationed in Afghanistan. Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios are producing the series.
