Dazn & BeIN Sports Secure Ligue 1 Soccer Rights In France Through Eleventh-Hour Deal Worth A Reported $540M
Image
Sports streamer Dazn is the new home of top-division soccer in France after tying up a five-year deal worth a reporting €500M ($540M). BeIN Sports has also secured a select number of games.

Fears had been growing that Ligue 1, which is among the most well-known in Europe, would begin this month without an official broadcast partner after the Ligue de Football Professionnel (Lfp) had failed to find a buyer for the rights.

Kylian Mbappe left league champions Paris Saint-Germain over the summer to join Champions League winners Real Madrid in Spain, while the likes of Lionel Messi have exited over recent seasons, significantly reducing the star power draw. Negotiations had rolled on without success, with previous rights owner Amazon opting not to renew. This, despite the huge pull of sports broadcasting in general.

However, a joint bid from Dazn and BeIN Sports was reported two weeks ago, and today it...

European Championships: Turkey’s Win Over Austria Helps Fox Score Record Round Of 16 Ratings
Image
As the European Championships kicks off the quarter finals, with games including Spain taking on Germany, Fox is celebrating record ratings.

The Round of 16, which saw England beat Slovakia with a last minute overhead goal from Jude Bellingham and Turkey beat Austria in dramatic fashion, was well up from the equivalent in 2021.

This year’s Round of 16 averaged 1.988M viewers across Fox and FS1, up 18% compared to the Round of 16 in 2021 (Euro 2020 was delayed due to the pandemic).

Fox said that it was the most-watched Round of 16 in the Euros ever on U.S. English-language TV. However, it is only the third Round of 16 in the tournament as the number of teams increased from Euro 2016.

Turkey’s 2-1 win over Austria, helped in large part by a magnificent save by Turkish goalkeeper Mert Gunok, drew 1.66M, up 5% from the equivalent match in 2021, which saw Sweden vs Ukraine watched by 1.575M.

Image
Messi's World Cup focuses on Lionel Messi's 2022 victory with Argentina, but it omits key details about his international career struggles. The documentary gives insight into Messi's World Cup journey, although it doesn't tell the whole story of Argentina's campaign. Following on from the recent trend of behind-the-scenes sports documentaries, Messi's World Cup: The Rise of a Legend follows the Argentinean victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but it omits some key details. Lionel Messi is one of the greatest athletes of all time, but his glittering career had always been missing the World Cup, the most prestigious prize in soccer. Mls Season Pass Hits 2 Million Subscribers; How Will Streamer Scale This Season?
Image
The arrival of Lionel Messi in 2023 caused millions of new subscribers to sign up for Mls Season Pass, but is another global superstar coming this year?

No matter which way the data is examined, it’s clear that the addition of Lionel Messi to Inter Miami Cf last season was a huge win not only for the club, but for Apple. That company owns Mls Season Pass, the streaming service created to stream every Mls match until 2033, and it’s notoriously secretive about the number of customers it has on various subscription services like Mls Season Pass and Apple TV+. But according to Sports Business Journal, sources with direct knowledge of Mls Season Pass’s subscriber total state that the service officially ended the 2023 Mls season with more than 2 million subscribers.

The Streamable first reported a number of 2 million subscribers for Mls Season Pass in August, but no confirmation has been given until now.

HBO Max’s ‘Soccer Soul’ Doc, About How Lionel Messi and Argentina Won the World Cup, Unpacked by ‘Secret in Their Eyes’ Star Ricardo Darín
Image
Madrid — Greater than fiction. Viewed by an estimated 5 billion, the most watched event in TV history, and the climax of the most popular sport on earth, no achievement compares in epic terms to Argentina’s victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Yet soccer, as Atletico de Madrid manager Diego Simeone famously has it, is played match by match. It is won moment by moment. No doc feature to date perhaps captures the ever evolving drama of Argentina’s campaign – the flux and flow of psychological advantage, the huge emotional stakes, the roll call of protagonists, and the multiple narratives of universal resonance emerging moment by moment – than “Soccer Soul” (“Elijo Creer”), narrated by Ricardo Darín, star of Oscar-winning “The Secret in Their Eyes” and dropped by HBO Max on Jan. 11 in Argentina and the rest of Latin America.

It begins with the defining moment of the whole 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“These agreements come at a time of genuine growth for Saudi Arabian football, with growing interest in the Roshn Saudi league from football fans all around the world,” said Saad Allazeez, Saudi Pro League interim CEO. “The watching world can now enjoy front-row seats as Saudi football transforms, and thanks to the Saudi Pro League strategy, football fans around the world will be able to watch promising young talent from the Kingdom competing and playing with some of the biggest names in world football.”

Previously, 4:23 Am: French pay-tv giant Canal+ has acquired French and African rights for the Saudi Pro League for the coming two seasons.

The announcement for the deal late Tuesday came just days ahead of the kick-off for the 2023-24 season on Friday (August 11), which will feature 18 clubs and run until May 2024.

Canal+ will air two matches a week while highlights will also be featured in its wider sports programs such as Canal Football Club.

The accord comes amid growing buzz around the Saudi soccer league following a flurry of high-profile international signings topped by Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Riyadh-based Al Nassr at the end of 2022.

Img, which was brought into sell international rights for the remainder of the 2022-23 season following Ronaldo’s arrival, is also handling deals for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 season.

The new French deal marks a step up from an agreement struck with Altice France’s Rmc Sport channel midway through the 2022-23 season for select matches featuring Ronaldo.

The Saudi Pro League’s upcoming season is likely to spark particularly strong interest in France thanks to the raft of French players in its ranks.

Former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kanté are with current champions Jeddah-based Al-Ittihad.

French-Ivorian player Seko Fofana, who has played for both national teams, and Senegal’s Sadio Mané play alongside Ronaldo at Al Nassr.

Other players in the league with a strong French following include Senegal’s Kalidou Koulibaly, Serbia’s Sergej Milinković-Savić and Portugal’s Ruben Neves, who all play for Riyadh-based Al Hilal.

The latter club is reported to have courted Psg’s Kylian Mbappé earlier this summer, but without success for now, while there were reports this week that teammate Neymar could be mulling a move to the club.

“We are very happy to be able to offer this brand new football championship exclusively for Canal+ subscribers,” commented Canal+ Director Of Sports Thomas Sénécal.

The Canal+ soccer offering also includes the UEFA Champions League, the UK’s Premier League, the D1 Arkema French women’s football league and France’s Ligue 1.

Kylian Mbappe will not train with Psg's first team squad amid contract stand-off
Image
New Delhi, Aug 7 (Ians) Kylian Mbappe will not train with the Paris Saint-Germain first-team squad when they step up preparations on Monday for the start of the Ligue 1 season as his contract dispute with the club continues.

Psg begin their French title defence at home to Lorient on Saturday and it is understood Mbappe will train with the ‘loft’ group rather than the ‘A’ training group, which is players who could feature for the first team, BBC reported.

The 24-year-old French captain, who still has one year remaining on his contract, is unwilling to renew his contract with the club. Therefore, Psg is eager to prevent losing Mbappe on a free transfer and, as a result, they have put him up for sale to secure a transfer fee.

As a result, the French star was also left out of the Psg squad for the pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea.

From Ronaldo To Mbappé: How The Controversial Saudi Soccer League Became The Talk Of The Summer & A Potential Rights Boon For Img
Image
“It’s going from a league that no-one considered to one that everyone does,” says Adam Kelly.

The Img Media President is talking about the Saudi Pro League, whose profile has skyrocketed this year following soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al Nassr at the end of 2022.

A flurry of transfer activity this summer that has seen some of Europe’s top players making the switch to the Gulf state has turned the league into the sports story of the summer. This has led to a raft of ethical questions directed at players and managers, mainly related to Saudi Arabia’s hardline position on many human rights issues and whether the investment is another example of so-called ‘sports-washing.’ It’s also quietly sparked fears from rival leagues such as the Mls that they might be usurped in the soccer pecking order.

Psg star Kylian Mbappe turns down record offer from Al Hilal: Report
Image
New Delhi, July 27 (Ians) Paris Saint-Germain’s star forward Kylian Mbappe has reportedly turned down a world record offer from Saudi Arabian football club Al Hilal.

The Saudi Arabian club has made a world record offer of 259 million pounds (300 million euro) for the French striker and was also permitted to negotiate with the star player.

According to the leading French sports daily L’Equipe, emissaries of the Arab club were in Paris this week trying to convince the striker, but he refused any discussion with the representatives of Saudi Arabia’s most successful club.

The 24-year-old French captain, who still has one year remaining on his contract, is unwilling to renew his contract with Psg and is believed to prefer a move to Real Madrid as a free transfer.

The French star was also left out of the Psg squad for the pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea.

Football: Real Madrid don't need any new signings ahead of new season, says Ancelotti
Image
Madrid (Spain), July 27 (Ians) Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has said he doesn’t need any more signings ahead of the coming season.

Ancelotti’s remarks were aimed at the recent rumours of a possible pursuit of Paris Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, after goals from new arrivals, Jude Bellingham and Joselu gave Madrid a 2-0 win over Manchester United in their American tour, reports Xinhua.

“The squad is good as it is. We are full,” said Ancelotti, who preferred not to answer direct questions about possible interest for the French international.

“It was a good game, we played well – especially in the first half, with intensity and moving the ball well. We defended well and we played better than in our first game [a 3-2 win against AC Milan].”

“We are good because we have a team with a lot of quality, strength, technique and commitment. That’s the only explanation,” continued the coach,...

Al Hilal make world record £259m bid for Psg star Kylian Mbappe: Reports
Image
New Delhi, July 24 (Ians) Al Hilal, the Saudi Arabian club, has reportedly made a staggering offer of 259 million pounds for Paris Saint-Germain’s forward Kylian Mbappe, setting a potential world-record bid.

The 24-year-old French captain, who still has one year remaining on his contract, is unwilling to renew his contract with the Psg. The French champions left him out of their squad for the pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea.

Psg is eager to prevent losing Mbappe on a free transfer and, as a result, they have decided to put him up for sale. Their aim is to recoup the approximate £150 million they invested to secure his permanent transfer from Monaco back in 2018.

The current world transfer record is the €222m (£200m) Psg paid to sign Brazilian star Neymar from Barcelona in August 2017.

Saudi Soccer Team Al-Hilal Submits World-Record $330m Bid For French Star Kylian Mbappé — Reports
Image
The Riyadh-based soccer team Al-Hilal has submitted a world-record $330m (€300m) bid to French side Paris Saint-Germain (Psg) for Kylian Mbappé, one of global soccer’s most dominant young stars.

Paris Saint-Germain have given Al-Hilal permission to speak with Mbappe about personal terms. There have currently been no talks between the player and the club, according to reports in Europe. However, soccer insider James Benge of CBS Sports reports that the Saudi club is ready to offer Mbappé a salary package of $770m (€700m) over one year. After the year is up, Mbappé, who is 24 years old, would be free to join Spanish giants Real Madrid on a free deal.

The French forward has been continuously linked with a move to Madrid and was benched from Psg’s pre-season tour in Japan last week after the club said it was convinced the player had agreed an unofficial deal to join...

French Cinemas Close Early Amid Nationwide Riots Following Deadly Police Shooting Of 17-Year-Old; Curfews Imposed In Some Cities
Image
The fatal shooting of a 17-year-old by a police officer in Nanterre, France earlier this week has set off a swath of nationwide riots and violence, resulting in early closures of some cinemas, curfews in certain cities and a plea for calm from the national football team, among more widespread issues.

The killing of the teenager, who has been named only as Nahel M., occurred on Tuesday morning. He was fatally shot in the chest, point-blank, at the wheel of a Mercedes for driving off during a police traffic check. The officer who fired the shot has been detained while being investigated on a charge of voluntary homicide.

Nahel M was of Algerian and Moroccan descent, and anger over the shooting is rooted in decades-long complaints about police violence and persistent feelings of neglect and racial discrimination in France’s poorer urban suburbs, as the New York Times has written.

Kylian Mbappe named Ligue 1 Player of the Year for fourth consecutive time
Image
Paris, May 29 (Ians) Paris St Germain’s Kylian Mbappe takes home the trophy — Ligue 1 Player of the Year — for the record fourth consecutive year.

Voted Ligue 1’s best player in 2019, 2021 and 2022, becomes the first player to win the trophy four seasons in a row.

After another exceptional season, the Paris Saint-Germain forward boasts 28 goals and 5 assists in the league.

“It’s a pleasure, I always wanted to win, to write my name into the league’s history. But even with all the ambition I have I didn’t expect to win so quickly,” Mbappe was quoted by France 24.

For the seventh consecutive year, a Paris Saint-Germain player has won the trophy for Player of the Year, following in the footsteps of Zlatan Ibrahimovic (2016), Edinson Cavani (2017), Neymar Jr (2018) and Kylian Mbappe.

Nominated last season in the same category, Nuno Mendes was named Unfp 2023 Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year.

Football: Champions League exit will bring big changes at Spanish giants Real Madrid
Image
Madrid (Spain), May 18 (Ians) Although La Liga doesn’t end until the weekend of June 3, Real Madrid’s season is to all intents and purposes over following their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League semifinal.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are 14 points behind Barcelona in La Liga, with Barca crowned champions last weekend with four games left to play. Although Real Madrid are locked in a race with Atletico Madrid to finish second, their place in next season’s Spanish Super Cup is already assured after beating Osasuna in last month’s Copa del Rey final.

At the start of the year, the pro-Madrid press were talking about the club winning six titles this season, but in the end, they lifted just the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Super Cup and the World Club Cup, in which they defeated Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia and Egypt’s Al Ahly,...

Image

Psg stunned by Lorient at home, Marseille rally to overcome Auxerre
Image
Paris, May 1 (Ians) Paris Saint-Germain’s lead in the French Ligue 1 was reduced to five points on Sunday night after a humiliating 3-1 home defeat to Lorient, while second-placed Marseille rallied to beat Auxerre 2-1 in a later match.

The French defending champions had to play with one man down for most of the match as Achraf Hakimi was sent off only 20 minutes into the game after receiving a second yellow card for a stamp on Darlin Yongwa. The Morocco right-back also got booked for a tackle on Romain Faivre in the fifth minute.

Faivre, the 24-year-old French midfielder, organized the attack well for Lorient, sending a brilliant cross from the right to help Enzo Le Fee open the scoring for the visitors in the 15th.

Although Kylian Mbappe equalized for Psg before the half-hour mark, Faivre contributed another sensational solo performance in the 40th, drilling from the right and...

I have to say, your arc is one of the best on TV, and you've delivered such a nuanced performance across three seasons.

Wow. That's cool, and you're a TV Fanatic, so that means a lot coming from you.

Mbappe hits twice to power Psg closer to Ligue 1 title
Image
Paris, April 22 (Ians) Kylian Mbappe scored a brace as Paris Saint-Germain defeated bottom side Angers 2-1 to move another step towards a record 11th French top-flight title.

The defending champions sit atop the standings with 75 points after 32 games, 11 ahead of second-placed Marseille who have one game in hand and will travel to Lyon on Sunday, reports Xinhua.

Mbappe put Psg in front in the ninth minute, bundling Juan Bernat’s cross over the line. The French international added another before the break, latching on to a Messi through ball before rounding Paul Bernardoni and finishing into an empty net.

The 24-year-old, who had won the league golden boot in the past four seasons, is leading the scorers’ list again with 22 goals.

Despite everything going well for Psg in the first half, the underdog Angers pushed hard and even terrified Christophe Galtier’s team in the second as Sada Thioub managed...

Kylian Mbappe becomes Psg's all-time Ligue 1 top scorer
Image
Paris, April 16 (Ians) Kylian Mbappe has become Paris Saint-Germain’s sole all-time top scorer in Ligue 1, scoring his 139th league goal in a 3-1 win over Rc Lens.

The French international, who netted his 139th goal in his 169th league match since joining Paris in 2017, is now one ahead of his former teammate Edinson Cavani, who scored 138 times in 200 league games between 2013 and 2020.

Mbappe barely seemed to move out of third gear on Saturday yet still had a hand in two of Psg’s three goals. The recently named France captain now has 20 goals for the campaign, putting him one clear of Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette and Losc Lille’s Jonathan David at the top of the Ligue 1 scoring charts of the season.

In the course of a spectacular match, Psg confirmed their status as league leader by beating second-placed Rc Lens on Saturday.

Marseille slow down in title race with goalless draw at Lorient
Image
Paris, April 10 (Ians) Marseille failed to keep up with the top two sides in the league title race as they were forced to a 0-0 draw at Lorient in the French Ligue 1.

Igor Tudor’s side have lost four precious points in two recent league matches as they drew with mid-table Montpellier 1-1 at home last week, reports Xinhua.

“It’s disappointing. The match was within our grasp, but we were lacking when it mattered most,” Marseille midfielder Matteo Guendouzi said.

“There’s no pressure, there’s still a lot of matches,” the French international added.

Table-topping Paris Saint Germain bounced back from two consecutive home defeats to notch a 2-0 win at Nice on Saturday, maintaining a six-point lead ahead of Lens, who beat Strasbourg 2-1 at home on Friday. Marseille sit third, two more points behind.

Both sides created some chances but failed to convert them. Marseille staved...

Euro 2024 Qualifiers: France thrash Netherlands, Belgium too win their opening match
Image
London, March 25 (Ians) World Cup runners-up France swept the Netherlands 4-0 in their opening group match at the Euro 2024 Qualifiers while Belgium outplayed Sweden 3-0 with Romelu Lukaku’s hat-trick.

The Netherlands’ suffering was even ahead of the match as five of their players were sent home on the eve of the game for catching the flu virus.

With Kylian Mbappe wearing the captain’s armband of the French national team for the first time, the hosts started their campaign perfectly in Paris as Antoine Griezmann curled in the opener after two minutes, reports Xinhua.

Six minutes later, French defender Dayot Upamecano tapped in a second, followed by Mbappe’s neat finish to make it 3-0 after 21 minutes. In the closing stages, Mbappe drove in to seal the 4-0 victory and climbed up to the fifth in France’s all-time scoring list with his tally of 38.

In the other encounter in Group B,...

Geoff Hurst
Hurst: The First and Only review – misty-eyed football doc reveals the man behind the hat-trick
Geoff Hurst
While too much time is spent on 1966 and all that Matthew Lorenzo’s profile draws out a hitherto unseen vulnerable side to the striker turned insurance salesman

The current flood of football documentaries shows no sign of abating; the recognition certain teams and individuals enjoy means that it’s not likely to any time soon. Geoff Hurst, the hat-trick hero of the 1966 World Cup final, is no doubt a natural subject for the “legacy” strand of these things: along with the likes of Jack Charlton, Bobby Moore and Bobby Robson, Hurst stands for a misty-eyed idea of Proper Football, when men were gods on the pitch and ordinary semi-dwelling blokes off it.

Hurst was all this and more, even if this profile focuses, football-wise at least, on that three-goal game at the expense of almost everything else. (Though that title might need a bit of nudging since Kylian Mbappé pulled...

Champions League: Bayern far from amused to meet Guardiola's Man City, goal-monster Haaland
Image
Berlin, March 18 (Ians) Bavarian icon Thomas Muller might be one of the world’s best joke-tellers. After most of the 33-year-old’s jokes, a loud laugh can be heard.

Ahead of the last-eight round of the UEFA Champions League, things might be slightly different after the German striker flippantly guessed: “No team will shout hurray when having to face Bayern Munich.”

It seems more than a bold guess that neither Muller nor his teammates at Bayern Munich are overwhelmingly amused by having to meet their former coach Pep Guardiola and the Spaniard’s current team Manchester City, reports Xinhua.

After the Bavarians eliminated Paris St. Germain in the previous round, the next hard nut to crack is waiting.

Guardiola failed to win the Champions League with the Bavarians, but three times ended up in the semifinals.

While Bayern earned respectful comments for beating Paris and their superstars Kylian Mbappe and 2022 World Cup champion Lionel Messi,...
