It's not uncommon for the mask of a terrifying serial killer to become the signature mark of successful horror franchises. Clowns even those of the non-killer variety are terrifying because the makeup hides their true faces, which is unnerving and inherently evil. The same thing goes for masks, as they cover up facial expressions, conveying cold, heartless brutality. It is no coincidence that the greatest movie killers racked up their body counts behind masks.
Jason's mutated face from the first two Friday the 13th movies was actually kind of goofy, and not something that instilled terror beyond the initial shock value, but once he donned the hockey mask in Part 3, he became one of the most frightening predators of the slasher genre. The mask really does make the killer, and some of the best in horror had iconic, signature face coverings.

In A Violent Nature surprised the audience with its narrative style, and it could have been different, as there was a first version that wont be ever seen, except for one scene. 2024 has been a big year for horror fans, with a variety of successful horror movies being released, and one that quickly stood out is In A Violent Nature. Written and directed by Chris Nash, In A Violent Nature is described as an ambient slasher and has the particularity of being told from the killers perspective. In A Violent Nature got a positive critical reception, but it was very divisive with viewers.
In A Violent Nature follows a group of teenagers spending some days in a cabin in the woods, where some of them find a golden locket in the remains of a fire tower. One of them takes the locket, unaware that, by doing that, he is awakening...

Like Friday the 13th meets Skinamarink, In a Violent Nature takes an arthouse approach to the slasher genre. While the experiment proved to be divisive, I found myself mesmerized by it.
Regardless of your feelings on the film, its Blu-ray release deserves to be celebrated. Harkening back to the halcyon days of physical media, IFC Films and Shudder’s two-disc Collector’s Edition is loaded with special features.
Two audio commentaries are included: a production and cast audio track with writer-director Chris Nash, actors Ry Barrett (Johnny) and Andrea Pavlovic (Kris), and producers Peter Kuplowsky and Shannon Hanmer, as well as a technical track with Nash, Hanmer, cinematographer Pierce Derks, and sound designers Tim Atkins and Michelle Hwu.
Here are nine things I learned from the In a Violent Nature commentaries…

After seeing what the best horror movies of 2023 had to offer, horror fans knew 2024 had its work cut out for it. Fortunately for audiences, the follow-up year delivered in surprising ways, whether through never-before-seen premises, stunning performances, extreme gore, hilarity, and some of the best kills on the big (or small) screen. Prequels to established franchises and narratives that took big swings paid off for the most part, and indie horror continued to prove itself as important to the genre as mainstream movies.
With the taste in the genre different for every viewer, these horror movies span all kinds of flavors, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy. It's too early to determine whether these films will ever be among the best horror movies of all time, but they certainly made the cut for the horror movies that have to be seen in 2024 so far.

It's not always knives, axes, and machetes in the horror genre. Sometimes the villains go about their killings in truly bizarre ways. There are death scenes that are just plain weird, while at the same time, insanely entertaining. These are the deaths that cause the audience to pause and try to figure out the logic of the death. Maybe they even make the viewer laugh because they're so out of the box.
When it comes to weird horror movie deaths, they're not necessarily kills that are brutal or creative. After all, there are plenty of deaths to choose from, like the memorable blender scene in You're Next or the surfboard decapitation in The Babysitter: Killer Queen. Strange horror movie deaths can certainly have elements of gore and uniqueness, but above all, they're meant to be bizarre and kind of head-scratching.

One of this years best horror outings, the slasher movie In a Violent Nature, is now available to stream on Shudder. And it should make the perfect cinematic experience for Friday the 13th. Written and directed by Chris Nash and made in association with IFC Films and Shudder Films, In a Violent Nature tells the perfect slasher tale while taking a surprisingly unique approach to the way that tale is told. The story (and bloodshed) begins when a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods. Little did the unsuspecting victims know that this is what entombed the corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific crime from decades ago. Oops. Now, Johnny is here...and he wants his locket back.

In a Violent Nature begins with a conversation between two unseen men as they walk through a deserted and crumbling shack in the forest. One of them takes a locket they find there, and that’s when the trouble starts. A hulking, Jason Voorhees-like figure emerges from the ground and begins to trudge after them. Seemingly confused by the sound of automobiles in the distance, the silent figure stops as if to ponder the rotting corpse of an animal caught in a steel trap, fittingly his first victim will be the poacher who set them after he catches himself in one.

In A Violent Nature is now in theaters, and one much-discussed - and shockingly gruesome - sequence from writer/director Chris Nash's critically-acclaimed horror flick has now been leaked online in all its gory glory.
Be warned: This really is one of the most twisted (no pun) things we've seen in a horror movie in quite some time.
The scene begins with undead killer Johnny stalking an unfortunate victim named Aurora (Charlotte Creaghan), who he finds doing some yoga close to the edge of a cliff. Upon seeing the brutish monster approach, Aurora attempts to flee, but finds herself caught between a steep drop and a rusty hook.
At this point, Johnny puts his entire arm through Aurora's stomach, and when she turns around to face him, he sticks the hook in her head and pulls the chain until her head is sticking through the hole!

Get ready for a thrilling slasher experience with In a Violent Nature, a leisurely paced film that delivers buckets of blood. Stephen King recommends this movie for horror fans, praising creative kills and the killer's terrifying Minion-like mask. Despite its niche appeal, In a Violent Nature has already achieved box office success, becoming a hit for IFC Films.
Famed horror scribe Stephen King is back with another film recommendation, and this time its the recent genre hit, In a Violent Nature. However, while the 76-year-old author had nothing but good things to say about the film, he also couldnt help but compare its killer to that of a Minion from the Despicable Me series. King is, of course, the author behind more than 60 novels of horror and suspense dating back to 1974 with the release of 'Carrie,' and his most recent collection of short stories called 'If It Bleeds' hit shelves back in April.

Like Terrifier 2 before it, the acclaimed slasher movie In a Violent Nature was released into theaters in its Unrated form over the weekend, and the box office numbers are in.
The unique arthouse slasher movie comes courtesy of IFC Films and Shudder, and it scared up an impressive $2.1 million from 1,426 theaters in the United States over the weekend.
That’s one hell of a strong opening weekend for an experimental unrated slasher movie, nearly matching the $2.8 million opening of IFC’s Late Night with the Devil earlier this year. That film gave IFC its all-time highest opening weekend, and it went on to make $11.9 million worldwide. Will In a Violent Nature similarly leg its way to $10+ million? Stay tuned to find out.
A highly unique slasher movie, In a Violent Nature frames the killings from the perspective of the masked slasher as he trudges his way through the woods.

In a Violent Nature raked in $2.1M during its debut, with its creators teasing a possible sequel featuring killer Johnny in a new urban setting. The movie has mixed reviews, dividing fans between creative kills and lack of suspense, with director Chris Nash clarifying it doesn't aim to redefine the slasher genre. Despite initial hype and a 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating dropping to 87%, In a Violent Nature sticks to well-known slasher genre tropes intentionally.

The new slasher movie In a Violent Nature recently debuted in theaters, and filmgoers have been treated to some of the most brutal kill scenes they may ever see in horror. However, there was another horrific one that was planned to be a part of the carnage, but it was scrapped due to inclement weather.
Per Variety, In a Violent Nature was discussed in an interview with director Chris Nash and special effects lead Steven Kostanski. They shared how the plans were different for the kill scene involving Lea Rose Sebastianis' Brodie, a friend of Aurora (Charlotte Creaghan) who gets pulled underwater and drowns. In the film, all that's seen is red blood clouding up the water where she submerged, mostly leaving her death up to the viewer's imagination. The original plan was to show the entire death scene play out underwater, which would have all been a one-take sequence.

The new horror film In a Violent Nature could be the start of a new slasher movie franchise. To avoid retreading the same waters as the first movie, potential follow-up films would be putting Johnny into new locations.
Per Variety, the future of In a Violent Nature as a potential franchise was discussed by director Chris Nash and special effects lead Steven Kostanski. While a sequel hasn't been announced at this time, Nash said he has ideas on where to go with a follow-up movie that wouldn't be "retreading" the original. Kostanski teased that a film with Johnny hacking his way through a suburban environment would be interesting, and he went on to state that outer space could be an eventual destination for the masked killer, though that suggestion might be a joke.

In A Violent Nature is now in theaters, and if you've been keeping track of writer/director Chris Nash's critically-acclaimed horror flick, there's a good chance you'll have heard about a shockingly gruesome scene that's been dubbed the "Yoga Kill."
Now, some specific details on the sequence have been revealed (via Variety).
If you'd rather not have the already infamous kill ruined before you see the movie, here's your spoiler warning.
The scene begins with relentless, undead killer Johnny stalking an unfortunate victim named Aurora (Charlotte Creaghan), who he finds doing some yoga close to the edge of a cliff (never a good idea with a murderous monster in the area).
"In a gore-tastic sequence, Johnny disembowels Aurora with his trusty, rusty hook, then yanks her head backwards through the gaping hole in her stomach. Johnny kicks the human pretzel down the cliff, where her mangled, mutilated body rolls halfway down.

An innovative and relentless slasher that follows the gory story from the killer's point of view, In a Violent Nature is now playing in theaters via IFC Films and Shudder. To celebrate the film's release, Daily Dead caught up with writer/director Chris Nash to discuss his unique feature-length directorial debut, including the ambitious logistics of following the film's killer through the woods, the cut footage that would give the movie even more of a horror hangout vibe, his plans to tell more stories in the world of In a Violent Nature, and he also shared his affection for Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (one of my personal favorites from the Friday the 13th franchise)!

When In A Violent Nature was first revealed to the world at Sundance, I was giddy with anticipation. As a massive slasher fan, I’ve always wanted a slasher seen through the lens of the killer. There are limitless possibilities and could provide the right spark to reinvent the whole subgenre. At least, that’s what I’ve always believed. But the reaction to the film was mixed, with our own Chris Bumbray giving the film a 6/10. I agree with his assessment, as the film doesn’t entirely come together like I’d want it to. It seems as though the goal was to make a Gus Van Sant film versus to make something that respected and subverted the types of slashers that came before it. Instead, it’s a rather lame affair with more bad acting than you know what to do with.

"We should take a lot more cues from music and just try to smash genres together." Well said, Chris Nash. Hitting this week, his terrific new film, In a Violent Nature, is indeed a "smash" of different film genres and styles. It's no wonder, then, that the movie is almost universally praised by critics and will surely be discussed and dissected by cinephiles for years to come. It's a simple revenge premise a buried and mutilated corpse is awakened once a special locket is removed from its forested location, prompting the risen "Johnny" to seek its retrieval and horrifically kill anyone who comes in his path.

Writer-director Chris Nash’s feature directorial debut, In a Violent Nature, opens in eerie serenity, with a gorgeously layered image of a forest seen through a deteriorated window frame. Birdsong and gentle breezes take aural precedence, though there are off-screen human voices of an evidently teen-to-twentysomething variety that clash discordantly with all the verdant beauty. The camera eventually tracks laterally, rack-focusing to reveal a locket hanging around a pipe. A hand enters frame, removing the bauble from its perch. Big mistake, as evidenced by the psychotic demon that soon emerges from the peaty earth below.

You're forced into the perspective of a relentless, ghostly killer with In a Violent Nature, a slasher film with haunting themes. The film can satisfy both arthouse cinephiles and gore hounds who love horror, though it may be too weird or too gross depending on who you are. Chris Nash's film is a brilliantly photographed slasher with a great hook, and creates some of the most chilling and disgusting moments in horror cinema in recent memory despite being a very slow-burn.

Watch out Jason Voorhees, there's a new masked killer on the loose. A new trailer was released for IFC Film's upcoming slasher flick, In a Violent Nature, and it's truly terrifying.
The film caused quite a commotion after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, receiving rave reviews, and is currently holding at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film aims to flip the script on the conventional slasher film genre by showing the audience the perspective of the slasher, rather than the survivors. The trailer evokes familiar horror iconography as the film's slasher, Johnny, has a striking resemblance to Jason Voorhees. The trailer also hints at what presumably is the lore for Johnny, with a character referencing the "white pine slaughter."

Following the recent news that Chris Nash's critically-acclaimed slasher movie, In A Violent Nature, will be released unrated later this month, IFC Films has shared a new trailer for the highly-anticipated horror flick.
This latest teaser features quite a bit of intense new footage of Johnny stalking his victims, while also spotlighting some dialogue from the unfortunate soon-to-be very dead teens.
To be honest, it's not nearly as effective as the largely silent previous promos, which really presented the movie as something unique for the genre. This comes across very Friday the 13th, and there's even a nod to I Know What You Did Last Summer ("what are you waiting for? We're right here").
Check out the new trailer below along with some old-school lobby cards, and let us know what you think in the comments section.

In his Sundance review, Matt Donato wrote that Chris Nash's In a Violent Nature "...gushes exquisite gore and reimagines the slasher structure with newfound originality," and ahead of its May 31st theatrical release via IFC Films, the film's official trailer teases some of the new movie's macabre moments after a corpse is resurrected for a vengeful rampage in the woods.

The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back - along with anyone in his way.

In 2017, a video game based on the popular horror franchise Friday the 13th was released. That game and another called Dead by Daylight had an option where you get to stalk players as the killer and try to pick them off one by one. The new slasher click In a Violent Nature is getting some praise from critics with its early reviews. Set to hit theaters on May 31, the horror film currently holds a high score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
From filmmaker Chris Nash, In a Violent Nature has a somewhat traditional slasher movie concept featuring a mute killer targeting teenagers in the wilderness. One big change, however, is that the film is largely told from the point of view of the killer, rather than the victims. It's a spin that has intrigued the critics with most of them at Rotten Tomatoes giving In a Violent Nature high praise, resulting in a near-perfect score at the review aggregator website.

Like Terrifier 2 before it, Bloody Disgusting reports that In A Violent Nature will be released in its unrated form.
The movie doesn't hit theaters until the end of the month, but some audio from a recent Chicago critics screening of writer/director Chris Nash's critically-acclaimed horror flick has now leaked online, and the audience can be heard reacting to what sounds like a shocking, methodical kill.
Though the specifics of this scene have not been shared, we have heard a few details. Without spoiling too much, let's just say that you might think twice about doing yoga after watching this movie!
There have also been reports of people vomiting during this screening, but we're not buying it. We've heard the same thing numerous times, and aside from maybe back in the '70s when The Exorcist was released, it's always been nonsense!

Synopsis: When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it.
