It’s a new month and a new month brings new horror. In this first full week of March 2024, Eight new horror movies are on the way, coming to theaters, VOD, and even the big screen.

First up, Breaking Glass Pictures has released Beware of the Boogeyman, a psychological thriller written and directed by Calvin Morie McCarthy, on VOD outlets today, March 5.

The newly released Australian queer horror film T-Blockers presents a colorful punk-rock portrayal of the trans experience, which steals the show from the underlying horror plot. Perhaps the most impressive part about T-Blockers is that it was made by then-17-year-old Alice Maio Mackay, a young trans newcomer in the film industry who directed and co-wrote the script. Mackay uses the horror genre to make biting social commentary on LGBT+ issues in the third film of her career, and she particularly excels at the stylistic colors, energetic soundtrack, and punk-feminist tone of the movie. However, certain aspects of the horror plot were sacrificed to make way for in-depth social commentary, making the story feel rushed.

Dark Star has acquired the US and UK rights, Screen Daily notes.

T-Blockers is expected to release in early 2024.

Dark Star Pictures has acquired US and UK rights to teen trans filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay’s queer horror T-Blockers.

The film premiered at Salem Horror Film Festival before playing Outfest where it took home the prize for best emerging talent, and also screened at Fantasia and Popcorn Frights among others.

Dark Star will continue the film’s festival run, followed by a release in select theatres, VoD/digital and physical media in early 2024.

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books have long been fantasy favorites. In fact, the CEO of Motive Pictures, a UK company planning to adapt a huge number of Pratchett’s novels for television, called Discworld “a national treasure.” But with the recent lackluster reception of BBC America’s The Watch, can television adaptations both succeed in live-action serial storytelling and live up to the expectations of Pratchett fans?

Although the last two episodes of The Watch manage to redeem some of the earlier missteps of the season, there are reasons why the program never quite lived up to the expectations of Discworld fans. The punk-rock atmosphere of Ankh-Morpork was off-putting to many, and the jarring technological levels seemed at once futuristic and anachronistic.

There’s a moment in episode three of The Watch, BBC America’s don’t-call-it-an-adaption of Terry Pratchett’s hugely popular ‘City Watch’ novels – the police-procedural strand within his comic fantasy Discworld series – where principle villain Carcer Dun (Samuel Adewunmi), quietly deploys probably the most important line of dialogue in the whole show: “The history of this world has already been written” he says bitterly to Wonse, his accomplice (Bianca Simone Mannie), “there’s no place for us here“. It’s a moment of meta-awareness in which our antagonist shows he understands the narrative conventions he is operating within and refuses to be confined by them; a theme absolutely typical of Pratchett’s books, and that runs through the show like a glass of milk runs through a sick old lady.

The newest episode of The Watch takes the departure from the original Terry Pratchett Discworld series even further, so that only the names of the characters and some slight bits of characterization resemble the books at all. Instead, it sends viewers down the plot toward what looks like an eventual showdown between the villainous and driven Carcer and his one-time friend, now Watch Captain Sam Vimes.

Previously, Carcer stole a book from the Unseen University Library that enables him to summon a dragon—but not control it. Now, both Carcer and the Watch are after an artifact that allows its user to control the dragon. Carcer intends to burn all of the sprawling urban Ankh-Morpork to the ground. BBC America has launched a teaser trailer for the upcoming fantasy-comedy series ‘The Watch’ (loosely) based on Terry Pratchett’s novel.

Based on the late author’s City Watch subset of his Discworld novels, The Watch follows a group of misfit cops, led by steampunk vigilante Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer), as they attempt to save their corrupt city from unruly crime and the mythical creatures wreaking havoc in it.

Richard Dormer will be starring as Sam Vimes, Captain of the Watch, Jo Eaton-Kent as Constable Cheery, a forensics expert ostracised by her own kin, and Adam Hugil as Constable Carrot, the idealistic new recruit raised by dwarves.

New York Comic Con‘s virtual lineup is starting to take shape, and the highlights include a Smallville reunion, a couple of doctors, and a chance to ask all your burning Lost questions.

Much like this summer’s Comic-Con @ Home, Nycc — taking place Thursday, Oct. 8 through Sunday, Oct. 11 — will be streamed via the event’s YouTube channel. The virtual Con will allow fans “to participate in talent Q&As during panels, turn every panel into a watch party, and geek out with other fans using YouTube’s Community and Live Chat features,” per the official announcement.

This year’s New York Comic Con will be available to fans across the globe, not just those lucky enough to be in town for the event.

The 2020 panels featured will be made virtually available, with live and prerecorded content available to watch on the Nycc YouTube page. “Star Trek” and “The Stand” have been announced as the latest panels, joining a list of shows including “Animaniacs” and “Doctor Who” that have already been revealed.

This year’s schedule will offer fans the ability to engage in virtual Q&As, as well as communicate with other fans through live chat features on YouTube. AMC’s “The Walking Dead” universe, BBC America’s “Doctor Who” and Hulu’s upcoming Marvel series “Helstrom” are among the first wave of panels announced for this year’s fully virtual New York Comic Con.

Each panel will take place between Oct. 8 and Oct. 11. on the event’s YouTube page, and various YouTube community features will be available for engaging in Q&As or chatting with other fans.

Some of the panels offer first looks and insight into upcoming series, such as “Helstrom” and the upcoming “Animaniacs” reboot. Others will center around long-time fan favorites. During the “Archer” panel, for example, the show’s cast will engage in a trivia contest, hosted by executive producer Casey Willis. Pennyworth’s Anna Chancellor and Outlander’s James Fleet have joined the cast of BBC America’s The Watch, based on Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels.

The pair are the latest actors to join the BBC Studios and Narrativia-produced series, joining lead Richard Dormer.

A corner of Terry Pratchett’s classic Discworld series will be adapted for the small screen by BBC America in The Watch.

The sprawling universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, a comic fantasy series of novels that has long since reached classic status, is getting a television adaptation treatment courtesy of BBC America in the form of a new original scripted series, The Watch, but the show will necessarily narrow its focus to the misfit cops that inhabit a subset of stories in the beloved series.
