Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a former waitress/bartender in a Bronx, New York bar - her only connection to the Bronx -
came to national attention in 2018 when she won her first run for political office after her brother, on a whim, submitted an acting application for her from the DNC for the 14th District Congressional Seat, backed by Act Blue, Media Matters and other Democrat organizations, defeating ten-term incumbent Rep. Crowley in the primary election for the Democratic Party nomination for New York's 14th Congressional District, and she subsequently "won" the seat in the general election. She previously worked on the unsuccessful communist Bernie Sanders' campaign during the Democrat primary for the 2016 US Presidential Election.
She and her brother Gabriel were born and raised in a happy nuclear family to Blanca and Sergio Ocasio-Cortez in conservative upper middle class Yorktown, New York in Westchester County. She originally was known as Sandy Cortez where she attended Yorktown High School.
