‘Luck’ Director Peggy Holmes Drew Inspiration From Real Foster-Care Stories: “They’re Kind Of The Heroes Of Their Lives” – Contenders L.A.
Image
Luck was on director Peggy Holmes‘ side when the film Luck landed in her lap, a project about a young woman in the foster-care system looking for her happy ending.

Holmes spoke about all the layers that went into creating the world in which protagonist Sam Greenfield (Eva Noblezada) exists during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards-season event, and what attracted her to the animated film that found a home at Apple.

‘Luck’ Review: The First Offering From John Lasseter’s New Studio Is a Mixed Bag
Image
Full disclosure: I don’t believe in luck, but I do believe that “Luck” — the first feature-length toon from David Ellison-backed Skydance Animation — represents a force for good in the world. It’s not easy developing both a pipeline and a project that could compete with the Disneys and DreamWorks out there. While the new studio’s debut can’t touch “Toy Story,” it’s an auspicious start for a talented group of storytellers.

After Lasseter got involved, “Luck” changed direction — and directors — picking up choreographer-turned-helmer Peggy Holmes and shifting to a plot full of cute supporting characters (lilting leprechauns! dancing bunnies!). Still, the creative team never quite cracked their promising subject, settling on a plucky but unlucky 18-year-old orphan who travels to the source of both good and bad luck — a garish Willy Wonka-esque parallel world where most of the movie takes place — in order to collect...

‘Luck’ Film Review: Animated Tale Delivers More Horseshoes Than Broken Mirrors
Simon Pegg and Eva Noblezada in Luck (2022)
Good fortune is a very real and quantifiable asset in the 3-D CG animated feature “Luck,” the first animated venture from Skydance Media – and the first project produced by disgraced industry figure John Lasseter since allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced in 2017.

Sam, a self-declared unlucky girl raised in foster care, doesn’t think of luck, or lack thereof, as a superstitious belief or as a placebo to explain the unexplainable events in our unpredictable day to day. For her, it’s the root cause of all her misfortune, big and small, including missing out on being adopted. Now that she has aged out of the system, her only desire is for her younger friend Hazel to find a forever home.

A longtime choreographer at Walt Disney Studios, Peggy Holmes directs this exceptionally crafted magical adventure. Despite having an emotional arc that becomes evident within its first few minutes, “Luck” registers...

‘Luck’ Review: Jane Fonda and Whoopi Goldberg Enliven Apple TV+’s Sweet, Familiar Animated Feature
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Sam Greenfield (voiced by Hadestown’s Eva Noblezada) might just be the world’s unluckiest person. The 18-year-old protagonist of Apple TV+ and Skydance Animation’s wholesome film Luck is an expert in poor timing, unhappy accidents and minor disasters. (Sometimes major ones, too). Random objects fall on her head, she slips and trips, and almost everything she touches breaks. Despite her general misfortune, Sam is a perennial optimist — a woman who prefers to look on the brighter side.

Luck tells the story of how Sam momentarily comes into better fortunes, loses that opportunity and sets out to find it again. If Apple’s extensive marketing campaign has got you doing a double take, you aren’t alone. Luck is the kind of hopeful, detailed tale Pixar would release, but this is not a product of the animation behemoth — not really. It’s the brainchild of Skydance Animation,...

‘Watchmen’ Comic Creator ‘Not Thrilled’ About Adaptation, HBO’s Casey Bloys Says
Alan Moore
Alan Moore, whose popular graphic novel “Watchmen” will provide the basis for an HBO drama created by Damon Lindelof, is “not thrilled” about the new project, HBO programming president Casey Bloys said Wednesday.

That’s not a surprise: Moore has famously opposed attempts to adapt his work for the screen. Asked if Moore has changed his stance, Bloys said no.

“I think that remains the case. That he’s not thrilled,” Bloys said in a Television Critics Association Q&a.

Bloys added that Moore isn’t consulting on the show. Again, no surprise.

Zack Snyder directed a film version of the 12-issue “Watchmen” comics series in 2009. Lindelof has said his take isn’t a remake or sequel, but a “remix.”

“This story will be set in the world its creators painstakingly built… but...

‘Watchmen': HBO Series Teases Dr Manhattan’s Return to Earth in Comic-Con Trailer (Video)
Billy Crudup, Malin Akerman, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson in Watchmen : Les Gardiens (2009)
It sure seems like another major “Watchmen” character from Alan Moore’s comic will be a big presence on Damon Lindelof’s upcoming adaptation for HBO.

The network dropped the first full-length trailer Saturday morning during San Diego Comic-Con, with the three-minute video (which you can view above) revealing that Dr. Manhattan is alive and well, still spending his time on Mars… that is until the end of the trailer, when a blue hand picks up a Dr. Manhattan mask in an empty street.

The series will debut in October.

Though HBO hasn’t shared any character details, it’s been reported that Jeremy Irons will play an older version of Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias, though the trailer showed a newspaper headline announcing his death. It also appears that Rorschach gained a cult following after his death, and Night Owl (or at least his Owlship) is still around as well.

Two New Motion Photos From HBO's Watchmen - "Masks Save Lives"
HBO has shared two new motion photos for Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series. As you will see, they show off the police, who have a very unusual look.

The photos come with the captions, “Masks Save Lives” and “Hiding In Plain Sight.” Masked police officers is certainly an interesting concept. The identity of these men and women officers have been completely stripped from them in the line of duty, making them a completely uniform unit.

It will be interesting to see how the police department is run in this way. Check out the photos below and let us know what you think of what they are showing.

Jeremy Irons Confirmed To Be Playing Ozymandias in HBO's Watchmen Series
A few months ago is was rumored that Jeremy Irons might be taking on the role of Adrian Veidt, a.k.a. Ozymandias in HBO’s new Watchmen series. Today, /Film has confirmed that Irons is, in fact, playing the character who as you know played a key role in the original comic series. The character will obviously be older.

The character was previously described as an “aging and imperious lord of a British manor.” It was also said the he is "highly intelligent and won’t let you forget it. Think William Hurt with slight Asperger’s. He’s used to being obeyed and always correct. Arrogant, erudite and patrician. Physically fit, he’s never missed a workout in his life." That sounds a lot like Ozymandias.

We don’t know how big of a role that the character will have in the series, but since he is being...

Watchmen Artist Dave Gibbons Says The HBO Series is " What The Fans Need, Not What They Want"
Damon Lindelof has made it very clear that the new Watchmen series coming to HBO is not and adaptation of the graphic novel. It will tell a new story set in the same universe and expand on that. Lindelof previously explained that "Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own."

Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons recently opened up about the series and sheds some light on what we should expect. He seems to love what Lindelof is doing with the series and tells Deadline that vision for the property is "exciting, entertaining, and absolutely worthwhile."

He goes on to note that the plan is for the series to "subvert the basic idea of what it means to be a superhero." He then makes an interesting comment regarding the series could end up being "what the fans need, not what they want.

Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen Officially Ordered to Series By HBO
