The Apothecary Diaries is a newer release anime based on a light novel series of the same name, and it's wildly popular with shojo audiences and fans of political intrigue. Maomao and Jinshi's story takes place in a fictionalized Imperial China, in the Emperor's Inner Palace. There are many players in and outside the palace, and all the characters are well-written and contribute to the complex plot.

The protagonist, Maomao, bridges the gap between two vastly different, but equally intricate, worlds. She is an integral worker in the Inner Palace, but she was raised around Verdigris House. The Apothecary Diaries is such a hit partly because characters from so many social and professional statuses feel vital and nuanced.
