‘Atlanta’ Season 4 Heads Home to Assess the Past and Plan for the Future
Image
Like many young American dreamers on their first trip abroad, the “Atlanta” crew took inspiration from their European setting to deliver a penultimate season filled with big swings. Nearly half the episodes didn’t include the main cast. Two more that did were spotlight episodes for Van (Zazie Beetz) and Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry), which didn’t include the rest of the core ensemble. Cameos stirred the pot, from Chet Hanks to Liam Neeson, Kevin Samuels to Alexander Skarsgård. The first 10 episodes released in 2022 — and the first released since 2018 — repeatedly reshaped “Atlanta,” with stories critiquing white liberals’ shortcomings (hello to “The Big Payback”), others examining fears specific to Black entertainers (“New Jazz”), and plenty of episodes chock-full of ghosts.

Spirits of the past feel right at home among Europe’s dense history and make great additions to a trippy comedy like “Atlanta” — especially ones that take the form of real characters,...

Yes, That Celebrity Cameo on ‘Atlanta’ Is Exactly Who You Think It Is
Image
A review of this week’s Atlanta, “New Jazz,” coming up just as soon as I have to watch the movie Cats sober…

With “New Jazz,” Atlanta returns to Amsterdam, which was the locale for this season’s first stop on the European tour in “Sinterklaas is Coming to Town.” But the episode is less a sequel to “Sinterklaas” than it is to the Season Two episode “Woods,” as Al once again spends a long day and night walking around and being reminded of the hassles of celebrity.

We begin...

Shana Feste at an event for Country Strong (2010)
Amazon is adapting Shana Feste’s “Dirty Diana” podcast into a television series, with Demi Moore attached to star.

The Qcode erotic drama podcast was acquired by Amazon in a competitive bidding situation with multiple offers. Feste will direct the streaming series and is also set to write it with Jennifer Besser, with whom she wrote the podcast.

“Dirty Diana” has been on Apple’s top 10 fiction podcasts list since it debuted in August 2020. The six-episode series is described as “loosely inspired by the story of a fractured moment in creator Shana Feste’s marriage, exploring how two partners can find their way back to each other through perseverance, connection, and sex. For those craving a new form of erotica, the podcast portrays sex and longing from a female gaze, with female pleasure at its center. Listeners are given a fresh perspective of sex as seen through an all-female lens.

‘Dirty Diana’: How Director Shana Feste Used Lockdown to Make a Very Sexy Podcast That ‘Terrified’ Her
Image
What is sexy? No, like, actually sexy? That’s the question that sparked director Shana Feste to create what would become “Dirty Diana,” her first foray into the podcast space. Not porn sexy, not heaving-bosom sexy, not boring sexy, not screaming sexy, really sexy, the kind of sexy that makes you want to, well, have sex. The kind of sexy that could make a lot of normal, everyday people want to have sex, and with their long-term partners to boot.

“Remember those HBO Sunday nights when ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Six Feet Under’ were on and you would just be so looking forward to getting in bed with your partner and watching together?” Feste said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “I remember thinking after I would watch those shows, ‘Wouldn’t it be so great if we could watch something that made us want to have sex with each other afterwards?...
