Derek Anderson was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and grew up on his family's cattle and grain farm north of the city. Like most small town Canadian kids, Anderson's childhood was spent inside a hockey rink. He played competitive ice and roller hockey as a goaltender throughout North America and Europe before retiring from the hockey dream to pursue his education.
Anderson attended MacEwan University, where he graduated with the Diploma of Business Management and the Degree of Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in International Business. It was in University that Anderson accidentally enrolled in his first acting class, thinking it was public speaking. He continued to study acting alongside business, and moved to Vancouver, Canada to pursue the career after his graduation in 2019.
