The film, directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, and Rupert Friend, marks a revival of the dinosaur franchise for a new era and secured the top spot despite competition from strong holdovers. Imax accounted for $5.5 million of the China total.

Tms Entertainment’s “Detective Conan: The Movie – One‑Eyed Flashback” – the 28th installment of the long-running franchise – continued its successful run, earning $8.4 million in its second weekend to bring its cumulative total to $38.6 million.

Warner Bros. and Apple Original’s racing drama “F1: The Movie” came in third with $7.7 million over the weekend, lifting its total to $21.8 million. Of this, $2.5 million came from Imax.

Zhou Yemang, Justin Huang, Hamza Al-sal, Yili Ma, Zheng Xu, Yue Wu, and Hongjie Ni in O pour Occupé (2021)
Film Analysis: Her Story (2024) by Shao Yihui
Zhou Yemang, Justin Huang, Hamza Al-sal, Yili Ma, Zheng Xu, Yue Wu, and Hongjie Ni in O pour Occupé (2021)
Three years after her debut film, the excellent “B for Busy”, director and screenwriter Shao Yihui is back with another Shanghai-set comedy about friendship and family. This time, however, Shao is much more ambitious in her desire to tackle themes rarely heard about in Chinese cinema, like divorce and co-parenting, domestic violence, patriarchy and gender stereotypes. Judging by its large success at the box office, the film has struck a chord with Chinese audiences.

“Her Story” is Wang Tiemei’s story. Wang (very convincingly played by Song Jia) is a single mother in her forties doing her best, if sometimes awkwardly, to raise her nine-year-old daughter. She must also deal with her ex-husband (the adorable Mark Chao), an affable if bumbling man who frequently visits them and does not seem ready to move on. She must also manage a younger would-be suitor (the equally adorable Zhang Yu), a new job...

‘Back to the Wharf’ Review
Image
Stars: Zhang Yu, Song Jia, Wang Yanhui, Lee Hong-Chi | Written by Xin Yu | Directed by Xiaofeng Li

Outside of a few horror movies, my experience of Chinese movies is seriously lacking and it is something I should definitely try to change in 2023. Back to the Wharf feels like a great choice to start with that.

An escaped convict comes back to his home town after the death of his mother, fifteen years after he left. He soon learns that the past is still haunting him and gets mixed up in the seedy underbelly of the city and the reasons he left.

This slow-burn Chinese drama looks fantastic. Especially when the city and streets have rain showering down on them and the street lights are glowing. Many of the driving scenes featured this and I loved them. Two driving scenes feature crashes that look realistic and manage to shock without blood or gore.
